Surprisingly good, but the end falls flat

After her so-called friends humiliate her on her 13th birthday, JennaRink makes a wish to be "30 and flirty and thriving." The next morning, she wakes up as her 30-year-old self in an unfamiliar apartment with anunfamiliar man in the bathroom. The premise of the movie is similar to that of "Big," but there aresome important differences that really make 13 Going on 30 an entirelydifferent concept. Jenna's transformation from 13 to 30 is actuallymore like a memory-loss plot. Although from her perspective she ages 17years in one night, 17 years have actually passed -- she just can'tremember anything after her 13th birthday. The requisite hilarity ensues while Jenna tries to figure out how toact her new age, how to do her job, and of course who the strange manin her bathroom is, but some of the themes of the movie aresurprisingly original and interesting. Jenna seeks out her childhoodpal and admirer, Matt, and learns that she ditched him shortly afterher fateful 13th birthday. Matt is less than thrilled to see Jennaagain, as he had gotten over her rejection and moved on years ago, butas Jenna relentlessly pursues his friendship, she realizes what a greatguy he was, and he begins to see in her the girl he loved so long ago.Jenna also finds that, although her 30-year-old life initially seemslike her dream come true, she had to compromise herself along the way,and was left with shallow friends, a meaningless relationship with alocal celebrity, and a lonely existence, estranged from the friends andfamily she once loved. The idealistic 13-year-old is dismayed to findthat her 30-year-old, "big-time magazine editor" self has alienatedmany of her neighbors and coworkers, and as the cheerful, innocent13-year-old adjusts to adulthood, she tries to set things right alongthe way.Unfortunately, the movie falls flat at the end. Since this type oflight-hearted film calls for a happy ending, the plot takes someunlikely and inexplicable turns. The cop-out solution involves somemagic (without giving too much away) that doesn't make any sense, evenwithin the reality of the movie, and leaves a huge problem in asub-plot forgotten and unresolved. A great ride, thank you Lady Garner, for taking thee on a marvelous trip...

Hello fellow movie buffs. I am the biggest movie buff of all time{mentallynot physically, brains over brawns I always say!}. Ahem, anyways, I just saw 13 Going on30,well, I JUSTSAW IT, I don't know about the rest of you's. First off, I just want tosay, welcome to theXander Zone! God I love that movie, XXX I mean. It's not as bad as somepeople say, theyare just jealous because they aren't half Italian-half Black or maybebecause they want tobe bald like Vin Diesel, the man rocked in Pitch Black yo! Okay, sogettingback to 13Going on 30. First of all, let's deal with the story. Okay to all youidiotsout thereclaiming this to be the female version of Big, let me lay this "sermon"uponyoussas. Big,had a young 13 or 14 {can't remember, sorry!!!!!!!!!!!} year old boy wishtobe BIG, andwhaddaya know, he's 32 the next day! Okay, so HE'S 32, and the rest of theworld ismoving along at a normal rate, without skipping 19 years like Tom Hanks'scharacterdid. In 13 Going on 30, Jennifer Garner's character as a 13 year oldwishesto be older aswell, and when she wakes up the next day, she's a sexy 30 year old, SHEhasaged, notthe rest of the world! ALl right, I won't bore you with anymore plotsummaries, instead, Iwill say that despite the so-so previews that make you think it's just aromantic comedy, screw them muthas! This film is propelled by one thing, Jennifer Garner. She's very deadon with her physical mannerisms and one-liners, and the jokes work well, except for afew, esp. involving Andy Serkis, sorry man, but you might as well stick toCGI becauseyou ain't workin in the world of comedy! This film isn't just a romanticcomedy, that'sjust a sub-plot, but it's really a feel good movie that I think mostlyyounggirls will enjoy, and hey why not, bring the boyfriends too if you's got them too! Chao!

You are 16 Going on 17....Age Films Unrealistic **1/2

This isn't exactly you are 16 going on 17 from "The Sound of Music."As is the case with many of these age-turn-around films, the filmssuffers from the fact that it's totally unrealistic and a mere figmentof imagination.A 13 year old, mocked by friends finds that she is suddenly 30 anddealing with many of the same people from childhood. She strives to gether life together.Jennifer Aniston is the 30 year old and she plays the part well. MarkRuffalo is good in the part of the guy she adored when they were bothso young. He has a tendency to garble his words when he speaks. It also shows you that some people can mature and others are up totheir old tricks.Very much surprised that Kathy Baker took such an unimportant briefrole in this film. Baker has so much more talent to offer.

Cute movie to watch with your daughter

This review is from: 13 Going on 30 (Fun & Flirty Edition) (DVD) Jennifer Garner is a wonderful actress and she truly "Sparkles" in this movie about a somewhat awkward 13-year-old girl from the 80's who wishes she was 30 in order to be like he cool kids. The plot is similar to the Tom Hanks movie "Big" but in this movie the main character is living in her 30 year-old body in the 00's with the mind of a 13 year-old from the 80's. Mark Ruffalo is her unassuming leading man and he brings more heart to this already enjoyable film. The movie reflects the moral of "Don't Judge a Book By its Cover." Jennifer Garner's character finds this out and she is able to use this knowledge to change her life.My teen-aged daughter borrowed this movie from a friend and I loved it the first time I saw it. It was wonderful to be able to sit and watch a movie with my daughter that wasnt' full of sex and violence and jokes that I didn't have to explain or feel embarassed about. The music was nostalgic to me and made me remember my own good times from the 80's.

Jennifer Garner makes this movie watchable

Jennifer Garner plays Jenna, a 13-year-old girl who makes a wish tobecome older, and she finds herself thrust forward 17 years into thebody of a gorgeous 30-year-old executive. Trying to discover whathappened, she gets back in touch with her old high school friends, who've all lived 17 years of life, while she is still just a girl inthe body of a woman. The plot is obviously similar to the movie Big and all the critics havealready bothered to point that out. While 13 Going on 30 isn't as goodor engaging as Big, it's still a decent film with a nice message. Themovie works a lot better than it should because of Jennifer Garner. She's funny and she has a great personality. It also helps that she'shaving fun in the role and it's so hard to actually hate her becauseshe plays a very likable character. Mark Ruffalo gives an okayperformance, he was a little dull though. I don't think comedy is hisbest genre. There are also some fun performances from Andy Serkis andJudy Greer. The film was too cheesy and silly for me at times. For example, therewas this one scene where Jennifer Garner is at a sleepover with allthese little thirteen year old girls and she's telling them about herkissing experiences. After she does this, they all get up and startdancing. It was just so cheesy and annoying though girls will probablylove that part. The movie is also pretty predictable. If you have seenthe preview then you should know how things will end. The movie ispretty simple yet still entertaining. It's also a lot better than othersimilar films like Chasing Liberty and The Prince and Me. In the end,13 Going on 30 is a decent, charming chick flick that should appeal toit's target audience. Rating 6/10

30 and Flirtty

13 Going on 30 is what you can call a female version of the 80's movie"Big". But yet the movie was very different from the Tom Hanks version.Jennifer Garner is very sweet as a 13 year old stuck in the body of a 30year old. She plays it off very well, and you just can't help not likeher.Mark Ruffalo plays the very charming Matt who in a wired way is theperfectguy. Sweet, charming, polite, funny and cute. The movie had some slow parts but over all the movie was fun. It wasplusto get to see Lord of the Ring's Andy Serkis in something besides asGollum.Serkis was very funny playing Jennifer Garner's boss(he did a very goodimpression of Michael Jackson's famous moonwalking dance in one of thefunniest sences of the entire movie). So if you're in the mood to laugh and see a good uplifting comedy see 13Going on 30.

From Teenager to Grownup Yuppie

Movies with plots that involve old and young people switching bodies or just young people becoming older are nothing new to Hollywood, but this movie, "13 Going on 30" is a film worth viewing. It stars Jennifer Garner in the adult role as a person who was only thirteen years old just a few moments ago when she wished she was older and had her dream suddenly come true. The reason this film works, in spite of the less than original plot, is because of the directing and the performance by Garner and co- star Mark Ruffalo. Garner acts a little silly at times, but she still acts normal- meaning, the way you would expect a thirteen year- old to act if she was suddenly thirty years old. Her actions and her lines are often funny and sometimes serious and sweet, just like one would expect if something like this really happened. And Mark Ruffalo- Garner's onetime childhood buddy- shines as her present emotional and love interest. He is extremely laid back and likeable in his role. Director Gary Winick deserves the rest of the credit for making this movie work. He includes many old songs from the 1980s, like "Love is a Battlefield", "Crazy for You", "Thriller", and others and he times the words of the songs at just the right moment to deliver the right message for a scene. Also, he doesn't make the mistake of turning this into a stupid, slapstick comedy. There are plenty of serious moments and the comedy that does make its way to the final product is funny and memorable. This movie makes a fun choice for a date film. Those of the female persuasion will probably like it most of all, but it's really a good film for anyone to see. It's cute, sentimental, sweet, and romantic, all rolled into one.

Garner shines in her first major movie leading role

Although this movie is often inaccurately referred to as a girly version of Tom Hanks BIG the movie is actually so much more and so much better. Whewreas in the previous movie Hanks character stays in the 1980s when he receives instant adulthood, in this movie an element of time travel is involved when 13 year-old Jenna goes to sleep in 1987 and wakes up all grown up in 2004.The movie is all the better for this plot device, we get to see where most of the characters from 1987 are now, and the implications of the decision Jenna makes at the beginning of the movie. Its both piognant, romantic and funny in its execution and you would be pressed to find a truly more involving comedy drama in recent years.Carrying the movie is star of television show ALIAS, the impossibly beautiful and talented Jennifer Garner. She proves that her entertaining turn as Sydney Bristow was no fluke by ably showing of her comic timing and delivery. Not a slam-bang comedy of the Ben Stiller or Adam Sandler vein this movie is more subtle and less in your-face. As a 32-year old who remembers 1987 well the pop culture references to that era in the initial scenes were drenched in nostalgia and as someone who has chosen a similar career path as Garner's character it is even more involving and interesting. Without giving too much of the well crafted story away, this movie makes you reflect on the decisions you make and the impilcations each decision makes. In this sense it is like the recent Kutcher movie THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT although far more entertaining and light hearted. This movie is well recommended.

AMAZING!!!

A pleasure for all ages, 13 Going on 30 won a spot in my top fivefavorites. With Jennifer Garner being my favorite actress, plus an amazing cast toback her up, this film will be sure to steal your heart. A love storywitha kick, it delivers comedic moments, and unexpected surprises. Throughoutthe 87 minutes of this movie, you will be swept away through 17 years ofJenna Rink's life that just fly by...literally! after wishing to beolder, she begins to realize how hard being 30 really is. She relies on oldfriends to get her together and help her get through. A must on the listfor spring 2004!~Stacy, 14

ks4 (18 April 2013)

Unoriginal and predictable, but with a few good moments. Garner saves the movie.

Jenna Rink is 13 years old, she spends all day dreaming aboutmoviestars and musicstars, while she wishes to become member of thecool clique, which is hard because it isn't her thing, at a birthdayparty they abuses her and she wishes that she could skip the teenagelife and go straight to being 30, her wish comes true.A very typical Hollywood movies, predictable pretty much from the startto the end, I were never really in doubt on how it would end up. Butdespite having this typical thing laying over it, it actually had someenjoyable moments, and I never really got bored, I guess this is one ofthose popcorn movies, I just don't think that it'd work as well thesecond time as the first time. For me the movie were stronger on the romantic side, than the comedyside, being one of these typical romantic comedies both sides got towork in order to make a strong movie, and that just didn't work for me,but it does have some romantic moments which are well done, even thoughthey are predictable. I smiled a few times, but I never really laughed, not that I expected that, the good thing about the humour is that themovie doesn't make up a lot of stupid comedic scenes to push the humourharder, that I found very pleasant, it made the movie feel smarter andmore clever than the average American romantic comedy. The movie however also had some poor scenes, I wouldn't call them dumb, but they should have left out the whole scene with Jenna making friendswith the whole neighbourhood of 13's, a bit unrealistic the way I seeit, I would expect that she'd have more of a predujice against thesesmalltimers now that she had become rich and beautiful, but I guess thedirector looked at it from a different point of view, never the less Ifound these scenes pointless. The direction of the movie isn't very strong, but who could expect thatfrom such an ordinary movie, I'd say that the strongest side of thedirection was that the director avoided to bring a dumb feeling to themovie by adding a lot of dumb comedian scenes, which I liked, I hatethese American teen movies that pushes the humour to the edge where itjust feels ridiculous.Jennifer Garner obviously carries the movie, she does pretty well andis quite convincing, in a movie like this where the whole plot is puton her shoulders it's good to see that she can fill the movie out.Overall the movie is pretty okay, if one is in a romantic mood thismovie would probably be one to enjoy, it doesn't bring much new to thegenre, and there are definitely better movies to be found within thisgenre, but it's actually okay, it's just a pretty shallow movie thatnever succeeds in getting under Jenna Rink's skin during hertransformation in her adult life.5/10

Jennifer Garner rox!!!!!

Ok, so besides the fact that I am a total Alias freak and like worship Jennifer Garner... this movie was so awesome. It was the most adorable story in the world. I mean how can a story where a girl falls in love with her best childhood friend not be adorable?! Jennifer Garner is just totally awesome. She is going to be bigger than like... Julia Roberts. She really is going to be the next big thing. Well, she already is but she is going to be even bigger!!! Watch this movie! It is great!!!

"Big" gets a sex change; Garner shines

13 GOING ON 30 (2004) *** Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, Judy Greer,Andy Serkis, Kathy Baker, Christa B. Allen. 'Big' gets a sex change isessentially the gist of this appealingly funny high concept comedy withGarner as a 13 year old who gets her wish to be 30 on her birthday butis blindsided by just how much she has changed to her true self as ahigh level editor for a glossy NYC based fashion magazine. Ruffalo isat his most affable as her former childhood friend that she is clearlymeant to spend the rest of her life with and Greer is suitably bitchyas her so-called best friend. Garner gives a charming performance withawkward élan and giddy go-natured sweetness that belies the all-toofamiliar formulaic genre that has a few good laughs despite itstrappings.(Dir: Gary Winick)

13 going on 30(Jennifer Garner)

Jenna Rink was a normal 12 year old..she had friends and she had....enemies. She never knew that the day she turned 13 would be the day herlife would change. For her 13nth birthday Matt, her best friend cameover her just a little while before Jenna thought her 'real' partywould be with the popular crowd. Jenna just didn't realize she wasunliked and they just wanted to ruin her life. So anyway, Mattremembered that she always wanted a doll house so he built her one. Healso gave her some wishing dust....he poured it on top of the dollhouse. So what do you think will happen you will either have to guess, or gowatch the movie!!This movie was pretty good..... kinda of reminded me of the movie "Big"But was way better!!I give this Movie 8/10 stars!

Great Soundtrack for a Great Movie!

This soundtrack adds fun and excitement to an already great movie with the classic 80's music. The music on the CD is actually in the movie, which is something that sometimes doesn't happen with soundtracks. The mixture of artists on the CD really makes it one that a lot of people can relate to,even kids like me who were barely alive to see the 80's. The people that were alive and kickin' during the 80's appreciate the nostalgic feel of the album too, I'm sure. The only let down that I saw was the fact that Michael Jackson's "Thriller" wasn't on the CD. It plays a key role in the movie and I was disappointed that it wasn't included. From Pat Benetar's "Love is a Battlefield" to Billy Joel's little known "Vienna," this CD rolls through the whole way. All-in-all, the movie was great and the soundtrack continued that greatness.

Surprisingly excellent

By now, many or most people would have seen the movie Big and the like. This promised to be just like those types of movies where someone wishes to be older or younger. This was a really well done version of that genre and extremely well acted by Garner. She was amazing as a 13 year old in a 30 year old's body. She made you really think that she was in fact still 13. Don't let the premise put you off watching this refreshing and funny film.

Complete fun

I honestly feel that "13 Going on 30" is one of the most easily likablefilms I've ever seen. Many people have commented (and complained) aboutits similarities to Tom Hanks' "Big". That's true, considering theessential plot involving a 13-year-old suddenly finding themselves inan adult-sized body. From there, however, the two films vary largely, and for me, this film works better in every way. First of all, I likethe concept of Jenna (Jennifer Garner) being advanced to the futurerather than just waking up in the same time in an older body. I alwaysfelt too sorry for Tom Hanks in the original film to enjoy itcompletely. This film has a similar feel to "Freaky Friday" where weget to laugh a lot at the characters trying to adjust to this newenvironment. There are a lot of sweet, touching scenes in this film, which easily fits the category of a feel-good movie. For the manyteenagers that watch this film, there are some good ideas beingenforced, including the concept that the models shown in magazines arenot real people and that teens shouldn't try so hard to look like them. The supporting cast, including Mark Ruffalo and Judy Greer, is decentas well, which always helps. This movie is more than a romantic comedyor chick flick and is likable for just about anyone. I enjoyed thisfilm incredibly.***1/2 out of ****

Enjoyable Movie

This is a great chick flick with some really cute, funny scenes. This wasmy first time seeing Jennifer Garner act. I don't watch Alias so I'veonlyseen her here for short periods of time while flipping through channelsandit was very pleasurable watching her in this film. She is adorable andplays the part of an adult with a 13 year old mind very well. I enjoyedthefact that there wasn't any swearing or nudity which is a rarity and a bigplus in my book. I originally didn't expect much and I knew it would bevery predictable (which it was) but it was still very enjoyable andpleasantto watch. There was one comment in the movie I didn't like but I will notgo into it because overall the film was great! It was very funny and amustsee for women.

(10 April 2013)

funny & sweet...

i enjoyed this movie, for me, it was very sweet.the rule of life should be like that, to be nice to the people that are nice to us.the chance to see your life in the future so that way you can somehow make things right, would be a good thing sometimes.life is not like that and this is why we have movies like this to make us remember some of those important principles in life.if you are in the mood for a comedy/romance that can kind of take you back in time, well, try this movie...
