A Former cop (Don Wilson) is hired to protect a singer (DeirdreImmershein) from a psycho serial killer who's also a martial artsexpert (Matthias Hues).I am a big Matthias Hues fan , and i must say that he looks as good asalways in this movie. Although, after watching his movies, i see thatthey still cant set up a fight properly, because Hues is always getsbeaten by weaker opponents. Same happens in Black Belt.I actually expected more from this movie. I expected the villain to besomething like Van Damme's "Torch" in THE REPLICANT. In Blackbelt wehave a serial killer, who is after a singer who looks like his mother, who abused him when he was young.Wilson on the other hand is trying to stop him , delivering his usuallines as a "good guy". His acting still needs a lot of work.Figh scenes are somewhat solid, but like i mentioned earlier, the finalfight scene between Wilson and Hues looks ridiculous, as well asWilson's fights during the movie. So if ur a Don Wilson fan, or you like seeing Matthias Hues as avillain, Blackbelt is worth a watch. Don't expect great plot, and greatfight scenes.

I've gotta say, i'm not a fan of Don 'The Dragon' Wilson. I can acceptthat he must be pretty tough, having dominated the sport of kick-boxingfor so many years, but that toughness just doesn't come through at allin his films. Pretty skinny, pretty inflexible and prettydrippy-looking, i really can't understand where his popularity comesfrom. Having said that though, i do own a large number of his films(not because of him, it must be said, but because of his co-stars, whofrequently outshine him!) and a lot of them are pretty good! Blackbeltfalls in the 'distinctly average' category. The story concerns a bratty, famous singer, Shanna, who hires karatedojo-owning ex-cop Jack Dillon (Don 'The Dragon') to be her personalbodyguard. You see, not only is her manager - a gangland boss - sendingmen to kill her for wanting to break their contract, but she is alsothe target for obsessed, deranged ex-Vietnam Vet John Sweet (MatthiasHues, in true psycho-mode!), who likes to send her severed fingers toshow how much he loves her... Of course, none of this is any troublefor 'The Dragon' (who, in the film Lion Strike, took on the mafia, theyakuza, the triads, the Russian mafia and Columbian drug barons - andwon) and it doesn't take a genius to work out who gets taken away in abody-bag and who's left standing...Don Wilson is always portrayed as near-invincible in his films but hereits just stupid - in one scene, after taking out a warehouse full ofmachine-gun wielding gangsters without receiving a scratch, he thenproceeds to march, shirtless, weaponless and alone, straight into thegangsters HQ and finishes off the rest of them, guns and all! He's thebiggest one-man killing machine since Chuck Norris! (Only with ChuckNorris you could believe it...) Though the film has plenty of fights, few of them are really exciting. Don Wilson just seems like he can't bebothered and its only the end fight, with an insane, bellowing MatthiasHues, that generates any excitement - and thats down to Matthias, oneof the best 'bad guy' actors around! All in all, a very average kick-boxing movie. It has a lacklustreleading man, some pretty dull fights, and a predictable storyline fullof plot-holes and minor irritations (apart from Don Wilsone seeminginvulnerability, why does it take so long, and so many victims, beforeJohn Sweet is tracked down? He kills in full daylight, doesn't even tryto hide his whereabouts and leaves blindingly obvious clues to where heis!) However, it's not all bad - John Sweet is a pretty intriguingvillain, with a twisted back-story that nearly makes you feel sorry forhim, and he's well played by Matthias Hues; the end fight is good, andDon 'The Dragon' reels off one of my favourite lines ever afterbreaking a pimps nose and booting him in the groin - "The nose-jobs forthe girl... The vasectomy's free!"I didn't hate Blackbelt; I didn't really like it that much either.Overall, average, but worth a watch if you're a fan of Don Wilson orMatthias Hues.

I can never seem to get enough of the martial arts genre, with all it's wonderfully told stories of battles between the representatives of good and evil, who don't like to use guns, but would rather decide the victor of the battle the old fashioned way, mano-a-mano.BLACKBELT stars kickboxing champ/martial arts legend/blackbelt hall-of-famer Don "The Dragon" Wilson as Jack Dillon, a karate instructor and former police officer hired to protect sucessful rock songstress Shanna (Deidre Imershein) from a nasty relationship with her record producers, who plan to have her killed for refusing to renew their contract. But her biggest threat comes from John Sweet (Mathias Hughes), who wants to kill Shanna. Why? Well, kinda hard to explain, but it has to do with Sweet being seduced into a sexual relationship with his mother. Since Shanna looks like Sweet's mother, who Sweet later killed for loving another man, he seeks to kill this apparent re-incarnation of his mom.BLACKBELT can best be referred to as GAME OF DEATH meets THE BODYGUARD. It has fantastic kung fu battles, and Wilson is not hte only martial arts king here. The cast is primary component is professional martial artists, and here there is a whole slew of gangsters judo punks who team with Sweet to take Dillon down, since he defeats them all in a barroom brawl. There are guys here that are in several of Wilson's other films, many of them from his (better known) BLOODFIST films, so he has some buddies that he has to beat up, unfortunately. But then, that's what happens in a kung fu flick, KUNG FU FIGHTING!!!!! I think that the fights are well staged and edited, very realistic.Of course, there's the madatory final showdown with Dillon and Sweet, and it's easily the best in this flick. It was, sadly, yet another of Wilson's direct-to-video movies (Only a few of his starring flicks have seen theatrical releases), but it deserved a big screen audience as much as the next action film. I'm telling you, you have to check it out. It a fabulous action thriller that prooves what his fans alredy know, which is, Don "The Dragon" Wilson Rocks AND Rolls, baby.

This is a surprisingly decent martial arts film, with some good fightscenes and 2 fun performances from Don "The Dragon" Wilson and MatthiasHues!. All the characters are pretty cool, and the story isn't tooshabby either, plus Don has quite a bit of charisma and has a certainpresence to him!. This has got to be one of the best low budget Martialarts films i have ever seen, and it's also pretty well made, and theacting is above par for this type of film!, plus Matthias Hues is onescary dude!. The characters are really likable, and the martial artsaction is pretty good, however i was a bit disappointed in the finalfight i thought it could have been a lot better, and most importantlylonger!!. It's sad Don continued to do Direct to video films after his1st 3 Bloodfist films were all a flop, as i thought he had a great dealof potential to be a cool action star!,and the fight choreography wasgreat! plus it's got some of the most violent fight scenes ever!. Thisis a surprisingly decent martial arts film, with some good fight scenesand 2 fun performances from Don "The Dragon" Wilson", worth the watch. The Direction is decent. Charles Philip Moore and Rick Jacobson do adecent job here with above average camera work, cool angles, andkeeping the film at a fast pace!. There is quite a bit of blood andviolence. We get lots of very bloody gunshot wounds, severedfinger, bloody broken noses, lots of harsh bloody beatings, bloodystabbings, cut off finger,an extremely bloody impaling, and lots ofblood. The Acting is surprisingly not bad!.Don 'The Dragon' Wilson isfantastic here, he is a lot of fun to watch, had quite a bit ofcharisma, did okay in his emotional scenes, is a great martial artist, had okay chemistry with Deirdre Imershein and was great overall!.(Wilson Rules!).Matthias Hues is very menacing as the main villain, andis a frightening presence, and what's more scarier he is a martialartist! (Hues rules). Deirdre Imershein is hot, and did what she had todo decently i rather liked her. Rest of the cast do fine. Overall worththe watch. **1/2 out of 5

First of all, this movie contains 10 of the worlds best kickboxers, and ibelieve that explains why this movie has so much fighting. Some of the fighting scenes are very graphic so this is no movie for thosewho can't take blood. The lead role is played by Don "The Dragon" Wilson who plays the goodguy.Onthe other side of the law is the brutal martial-arts killer John Sweetplayed by "Matthias Hues".(They have one of the coolest fights ever put onfilm)The fighting scenes in this movie is so brutal that it makes Jackie ChanandBruce Lee look like two kids having fun. This is street kickboxing at it's best.

Don Wilson stars as Jack Dillon, a karate instructor (Also ex-cop) whoprotects the superstar singer Shanna(Dierdre Immershein) who is thetarget of a psychotic fan named John Sweet(Mattius Hues), seems Sweethad a love affair with his mom(Eeew!) and Shanna reminds him of momwhich is why he kills brunettes and sends their fingers to him. (A trueromantic, if there ever was one.) Also on board are the mobsters wholook to collect the insurance on Shanna's contract, due to herreluctance to sign again, this all of course leads to a three way fightwith Dillon fighting not only the mobsters but also a psychopathicserial killer. Blackbelt is a better than expected martial arts actionflick which ripped off 'The Bodyguard' only this time there are a lotof fight sequences and less bad singing. (Although the soundtrack andthe 80s music is terrible also) This of course works for the type ofangle that the movie aims for. Also the climax in particular isexciting and the movie is packed with gore and enough action toentertain any schlock movie fan. I saw this back in 96 on WGN andbecause I missed about 20 minutes of it, I decided to rent it the nextday. So far it ranks as the only enjoyable flick I've seen from DonWilson and as a guilty pleasure.* *1/2 out of 4-(Pretty good)

This movie is amazing. Don the dragon Wilson is like the edward nortonofmartial arts, he can play any part you give him in a kun-fu movie. Andhisfast paced action style of fighting is reminiscent of the great chucknorris.God chuck why did you have to go to tv? Don't you know we miss you, pleasecome back. Well at least you have brought the martial arts genre to tv.Thebest way to describe this movie is enter the dragon meets the matrixmeetspulp fiction meets gone with the wind or something because there is alittleromance brewing in the air. The first scene of the movie already hasmartial, arts murder, and brief(and classy) nudity. The movie only getsbetter from there as it goes on till the end. The end is sooooo good, Iwon'ttell you what happens I will just say that it is like all this fightingandyou aren't sure who's going to win and then it ends and you're like whoanoway, did you see that? But you did.

This review is from: Blackbelt (DVD) I saw this movie for the first time many, many years ago on HBo or Cinemax or one of those channels. I was happy to finally buy it on DVD. When I was watching it, I noticed some scenes seemed to be "edited" or something was missing. I also have not seen the movie in probably like 10 years or more. But, later on, I KNEW it was edited because I always used to laugh at how the blood was very dark like chocolate syrup and none of those scenes seemed to stand out. When Sweet kills the 2 construction workers, he headbutts one in the mouth and the dark liquid flows out of his mouth- its gone. When Sweet kills Will, he says "time to die" and snaps his neck- gone. I like the movie but I dont know why they have to edit it- its not some horror movie- it is totally unnecessary. I will try to look for the REAL version in the future. Hope this helps anyone looking to purchase this.

Matthias is the ultimate "bad guy" in this one...and you just love him! He's about the only actor I can think of that you just love to hate.Maybe it's the hypnotic blue eyes, maybe the dimples or maybe its themuscles. Maybe its a combination of all, but he lights up the screen ina way that keeps you coming back for more. Don "the Dragon" Wilson isthe "star" of the movie, but Matthias is really the STAR of the movie.Watch it once, you'll watch it twice...watch it twice, you'll watch ittrice...and so on and so on. It's a movie you won't get tired ofwatching. So when you don't know what you want to watch, watch BlackBelt. You'll be glad you did!

I watched this film for 45 minutes and counted 9 mullets. That's a mulletevery 5 minutes. Seriously though, this film is living proof that formulaworks. If it ain't broke, it don't need fixin. A streetwise-yet-vulnerableheroine, a hardened ex-cop martial arts master with a heart of gold and aserial killer with 'issues'. Pure magic.

Blackbelt has the feel of another one of Don Wilson's movies from the Bloodfist series. The beginning credits list about 8 or so real life martial arts champions that are in the movie, also like the Bloodfist movies. Matthias Hues, though in an unusual role, nevertheless plays the movies big villain. The acting and rest of the charcaters are about what one would typically expect from Don Wilson. Overall, its an average film that at times feels better than the usual, and at others, not so good. The story is somewhat original for a martial arts film, borrowing a somewhat "Bodyguard" movie plot as Jack (Don Wilson) must protect a famous singer, both from her nasty bosses and an even more nasty, and literally crazy, John Sweet (Matthias Hues) This is where the weirdness lies. When he was younger, John apparently had some sort of intimate relation with his own mother and she wanted to marry him. Thats just sick. Ok, yeah, weird. Anyway, other than that though, Matthias Hues does a good job at keeping everyone frightened in the movie. He and Wison get the final showdown - 3 minutes of a well made fight with a baaad effects ending. Oh, and as far as all those forementioned martial arts champions that star, Don Wilson makes a quick finish of nearly all of them in bar fight scenes and so on, so disspointingly, no good one on one's except the final fight.Blackbelt is typical Don Wilson, which is actually better than many. While the movie actually has some originality, the action is actually predicatable and average. Matthias Hues is a delight, despite his strange character and Wilson delivers the rest. Good film, but not great - I give a 3-1/2 stars exactly.
