Cars 2 isn't a bad movie, but it was clearly more designed to sell toysthan to be enjoyed at the theatre. The story was completely uninspiredand at times too complex for kids. It was a tad too violent for mytaste but not to the point to scare a kid or hurt the kids psyche inany way, but I get the feeling that all the explosions were there justto keep interest as the story itself wasn't enough. But what botheredme the most was the ending. Or lack thereof. From Toy Story all Pixarmovies have memorable endings. Some almost make me cry every time I seethem ("I wasn't aiming for the truck" in Toy Story 1, saved by the clawin Toy Story 3, Mc Queen sacrificing his Piston Cup for an ailingKing). Cars 2 simply didn't have a memorable ending by any standard. Itjust happened, and I'm sure in a few weeks I won't even remember whatit was. A completely forgettable movie, and I think that's a definitivefirst for Pixar. What a shame.

his is a sequel to the first film from the masterminds at my favoriteanimation studio, Pixar. The film has recently been receiving a hugewave of negative criticism, and it's the first Pixar film that has everreceived a rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It takes off five years after the events of the first film, withLightning McQueen (Voiced by Owen Wilson) now a winner of four PistonCups. So, he is invited to the first annual World Grand Prix todetermine the world's fastest car, and to advertise a new brand ofalternative fuel. He invites his friend Mater along, and whileLightning is racing in the tournament, Mater (Voiced by Larry the CableGuy) gets swept up in a case of international espionage. He's mistakenfor an American spy by a sleek, British Intelligence agent named FinnMcMissile (Voiced by Michael Caine), and an agent in training namedHolley Shiftwell (Voiced by Emily Mortimer), two cars seeking to bringdown a plot to take over the world by a league of old fashioned, morebroken down cars. The recent reception mentioned earlier had made me a bit gloomy, as I'dhoped I'd never have to see Pixar make a bad movie. And you know what? While it's worth noting that it's their worst film, and isn't among theranks of WALL·E, Ratatouille, or Finding Nemo, I was incrediblyrelieved that, personally, I still haven't had to see Pixar make a badmovie. I think it's just as enjoyable as any of their other movies. This is Pixar's second stab at a full on, fast paced action film (Thefirst of which was The Incredibles), and the movie is highly gleeful inits 1960's spy movie tone and stylistics. The plot is like an animatedtwist on a James Bond film, right down to the cool cars and gadgets, international jumping between scenic locations, even the film'svillain, Professor Zundapp, delightfully based on the foreign, scientific masterminds of the James Bond series. That, and FinnMcMissilie is clearly an homage to Bond, himself.I do think it slightly lacked the same stellar character development weusually expect from Pixar, and sometimes it feels a little too crowded, but I think Cars 2 has a lot of charming factors that propel it. Theaction is really exciting, the movie moves briskly, and it's filledwith so many hilarious gags. I especially admire the voice-overperformances, which also includes the likes of John Turturro, ThomasKretshmann, Eddie Izzard and Joe Mantegna. The technical side of the film is also utterly amazing. I need notbring up the animation, as anyone who's ever seen one of Pixar's movieswould expect it to be of the highest quality, which it is. The sounddesign by Tom Myers will surely go down as one of the year's best, andI would be a fool not to mention composer Michael Giacchino's thrillingmixture of John Barry and surf guitar. And while 3D is a polarizingfactor for movies, I think it really added to the excitement of thisone. And now, while I go anxiously await Pixar's next feature film, Brave,I'll most likely be back to the cinema once, or even twice more to giveCars 2 some richly deserved business.I give it ***1/2 out of ****

Take the Cars characters, place them in "Wacky Races"-style races, mixin a healthy dose of Bond (including physically impossible gear), shake(don't stir) and you get Cars 2. Finn McMissile is Bond and Sir MilesAxlerod is Dominic Greene. A character who has already given surprisesus shows them in spades in a fun globe-trotting adventure. The Michael Giacchino soundtrack, just like his work for TheIncredibles, invokes a number of spy themes. "Collision of Worlds" byRobbie Williams & Brad Paisley hits the combining of Cars and Bond.Cats and Dogs 2 has numerous Bond references - this film has anabsolute ridiculous number of them, starting from the Aston Martin DB5,Bond's iconic vehicle (FYI, they're listed in the credits). For a Bondfan like me, they're fun, but the family-film only people will beconfused and angry (unless they watch the Spy-oriented family filmslike Spy Kids).Lightning McQueen grew up in the first film - this time it's Mater'sturn. His country hick persona and inability to keep a secret hide hisstrengths. How everyone grows I'll leave for you to discover (and somefolks seem like they didn't). A hint: Think Columbo and Matlock.Lots of guns, explosions, and numerous understood deaths of vehicles.(Don't the 80''s Transformers do this?) Fortunately, nothing as cold asBond killing a henchman. Also, aren't kids often playing with carshitting each other and shooting?Including the closing credits, this film borrows from numerous films inan interesting concoction (shaken, not stirred) worthy of theprofessional critic rating it has been getting. My daughter is awaitingits arrival on DVD/Blu-Ray/Digital Copy to see it again and again.Myself, I'll be getting the soundtrack once I put enough in iTunescards together...Disclosures: I own Disney stock which was originally Pixar stock. Arelative of mine, Michael Fong (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0284591/),works at Pixar. Finally, my screen-saver is a collection of photographsof Aston Martin Rapides I took at a special showing at the Palace Hotelin San Francisco in 2009 and the 2010 San Francisco Auto Show.

SPOILER WARNING FOR SOME PIXAR MOVIES Let me start by saying that Iliked the first Cars movie that came out in 2006. None the less, when Iheard that there was a sequel coming out, about the characters gettingmixed up in a spy caper, I was sceptical. After all, the first moviehad absolutely nothing to do with spies. Now that I've seen it, though,I have to say, it actually sort of makes sense. You heard me. Cars 2 being a spy movie makes sense. The first movie wasabout Lightning McQueen, who's a race car, so naturally the racingtheme caries on to the second film. When I heard that this movie wasgoing to be Mater's movie, I was afraid there was only going to be oneor two scenes with Lightning McQueen, but thankfully he's still one ofthe main characters. Just not the main one. So while McQueen's off in aracing storyline they needed to give Mater some kind of story, and Isuppose a spy caper is better than some of the other ones they could'veended up using. A spy storyline automatically comes with potential tobe epic. It works as an international story, just like theinternational racing story.Unfortunately, this potential is pretty much completely wasted. Pixaris known for delving face-first into rich story lines filled with wellfleshed-out characters and taking the time to explore every detailcarefully. This movie does none of that, which is a shame because weknow the studio is capable it. And with scenes that in other moviesthey did well with that the scenes in Cars 2 had the potential tomirror. Like remember when Woody has to convince Buzz to snap out ofhis downward spiral and help him in order to save him in the first ToyStory? Or what about when Mr. Incredible has to watch Syndrome takedown the jet in The Incredibles? That scene was especially intense, andCars 2 had the potential to delve into its own storyline and bring upscenes like that.Another big problem was they never tried to flesh out the newcharacters they created, most noticeably the character of HolleyShiftwell. She works for the agency but she's not actually a fieldagent, therefore she's supposed to be this underdog, but we never seeanything to even hint at the fact that she hasn't done this before. Shedoesn't get any kind of a real back story, and she's supposed to be thecharacter that becomes Mater's love interest by the end of the movie. But the only scene I can remember that was just the two of them in theentire movie was the scene where they first meet. The rest of theirdialogue is basically about how they're going to stop the bad guys.Aside to Mater occasionally referring to her as his girlfriend and herlabelling herself that way at the end, there's nothing to bring theirrelationship to that conclusion. It's not that Pixar doesn't know how to do relationships. I mean eventhe best friend theme between McQueen and Mater feels a little forced. What happened to the Pixar that gave us Woody and Buzz? Or Mike andSully? This movie almost feels like it's going through the motions.Don't get me wrong, there were a few good moments, most noticeablyMater actually being able to be helpful when it came to figuring outwhat was going on, using his knowledge of broken down cars, which was anice touch, and that knowledge being the thing that helps him save theday in the end. A few of the culture jokes were funny, but theycould've replaced most of that with story and character moments and itwould've been a much better movie for it.This doesn't make up for the problems though, in fact the movie doesn'teven feel like a Pixar movie. It feels more like a straight-to-DVDrelease kind of sequel.I was going to give a five out of ten, but for those occasionalmoments, and the fact that it wasn't just all Mater all the time, I'llto so far as to give it a bit more.6/10

I love Pizar. Since the original Toy Story debuted I have religiouslygone to opening weekend to watch every new release, and have never beendisappointed. Until now.I took my 2 1/2 year old daughter to see what I naturally believedwould be another great family flick. Instead she spent half the movielooking away and the other half saying "ouchie" as the violence rippedacross the screen. I truly felt bad that I subjected her to it as Ikept telling myself this is a Pixar film it will get better.About the halfway point in the flick when Pixar officially sold out toState Farm Insurance and gave them their own line I realized this moviewould be past redemption, but I got my $5 matinée worth and stuck itout. This is my first review and I cannot emphasize enough to otherparents out there DO NOT take your child to see this movie, it is amish mash of a storyline about being yourself and defeating big oil andloving State Farm all thrown into one.2 out of 10 only because there is a great bathroom scene in Japan thatshowed there was a little bit of Pixar thrown into the film.

It's an odd addition to the "Cars" name, but an abundance of humor, action, and beautiful visuals show just how unappreciated "Cars 2" really is. You know something, I've never really understood why people always told me that "Cars" was the worst Disney Pixar film ever made. From what I've read, the story isn't as appealing as other works in the Disney Pixar line up, and friends tell me they just didn't care for the characters. I, of course, am in the minority of audience members who fell that "Cars" is no different in terms of charm and lovability from the rest of Disney Pixar's film line up. I've always stuck to my guns claiming that "Cars" is just as amazing as the likes of "Toy Story" or "Up", because I found myself learning to love the characters of the "Cars" world, and felt the story was both endearing and charismatic. Then came the poor reviews for "Cars 2"; a movie I had been greatly anticipating since it's announcement. Again, everyone was saying the story was nowhere near as well done as previous entries in Disney Pixar's movie line up; and I was completely bummed. It almost made me not even bother seeing it at all; since I felt it would ruin the built up reputation I posses in my head of how amazing each and every Disney Pixar film. I know when you're trying to be a good movie critic, one mustn't allow themselves to be swayed by public opinion, but I just couldn't help but feel a little let down; even before I saw the film itself. Thankfully, I finally built up the nerve to ignore the harsh reviews and sit down at the Cinema Center to watch it myself. I decided to just clear my mind of the bad publicity, and just watch it with the open mind a good critic should posses. From what I have gathered from the reviews other critics have lined before me and from what I personally saw in "Cars 2", I know now that overall public opinion should never dictate whether you choose to see a film or not. "Cars 2" is, in fact, an amazing piece of art from the Disney Pixar team. "Cars 2" has almost all of the original characters from the first film, excluding Doc Hudson because of Paul Newman's death. This time around, Lightning McQueen has won 4 Piston Cups since his first attempt in the first film, and is planning on taking a break from the racing world to pal around with his best friend Mater, and to spend quality time with his girlfriend Sally. When Mater hears of the news that Lightning rejected an entry opportunity to participate in the first ever "World Grand Prix", and additionally hears Lightning's rival Francesco's mockery of McQueen, he calls in to the news broadcaster to personally tell Francesco how well Lightning would mop the floor with him. This, subsequently, forces Lightning to accept the entry offer and participate. The World Grand Prix has all drivers completely powering themselves with a new alternative fuel source called Allinol; and major fuel tycoons are trying to stop the fuel from making a huge public splash for patrons to turn away from gasoline. The threat that lies within the race is all too dangerous, and British spies Finn McMissile and Holly Shiftwell are there to figure out who specifically is causing all this chaos. After accidentally mistaking Mater for their American counterpart, Mater is thrown into a world of action and espionage to help Finn and Holly figure out what's truly going on behind the races. Mater tries to do his best for both the spy team, and Lightning, but begins to feel like he's more of a problem than actual help. In order for everyone to succeed, Lightning must set away his pride, Finn and Holly must do whatever's necessary, and Mater must look within himself to be the great car he knows he really is. After everything I had read on why "Cars 2" was so bad, I found myself completely shocked to see that there was really nothing wrong with the film at all. The story may be the strongest ever, but it still holds itself very well because of the still lovable Pixar characters and exotic locations. The visuals are even better than the previous "Cars" entry, and it's even funnier as well! The fact that so many critics were so willing to pan this film amazes me; there's no change in my admiration for how well Disney Pixar makes a good film. Everything from music, to story, to characters fits well with the name, and I don't see myself falling for the critical buzz again. Now, let's point out something really quick though. I do understand when some say this Pixar movie doesn't have the same amount of charm behind it; I do somewhat agree here. When comparing it to the previous "Cars" in terms of charm, it doesn't have the same amount and uses a more mature kind of charm with itself; sort of like Up's charm, although I do feel Up was better. This film actually deals with cars dying throughout it; which you would expect from a spy type film, but I didn't really see it coming with a Pixar one. It doesn't hamper it in any way, but I just though I'd point it out. Oh, and one last thing before I give a final summary if how much I liked "Cars 2". What I mean by, "An odd entry", is that the whole spy theme going on in this entry feels like it could have easily been used in a different Pixar film; like a new film series about spies. I don't know why they used it specifically for "Cars" and to make a "Cars" film surrounding it, but nevertheless, it's still a well done film overall. So to sum everything up, "Cars 2" is a highly under-appreciated Disney Pixar film. Story, visuals, characters, music, scenery, and so much more I felt was done right and just wasn't noticed as well as it should have been by so many others. Besides, it's about talking cars that can fly, swim, and do karate; what can you possibly hate about a movie that has that? It's nowhere near predictable and anyone who looks past the negative reviews surrounding it will find the same amount of Disney Pixar charm they've come to know and love with the other entries they've done so well.

Cars 2 was an Ok movie, but I'm really disappointed in the bonus features. I use to love watching the hours of great looks behind the scenes Pixar use to include on their DVD and Blu-rays. With each release they become skimpier and skimpier. One Mater Tale, which is only a commercial for the new Pixar show "Planes", the Toy Story short, and a director commentary, that's it! I feel short changed. We use to get tours of Pixar, got to sit in on story conferences, deleted scenes, concept art ect. I guess they are saving that for the double dip. Pixar use to be all about bang for the buck, since Disney took over they seem to only be about the buck.

Cutting past all the harsh overly judgmental comments about this film, keep in mind I'm rating this on behalf for kids. It's still a kidsmovie right? A movie about anamorphic cars? Even the insects are cars?good, It was awesome, it was funny, the only thing different was thelocation and no Doc. I did like the first movie a little better but itwas a completely different story. First one about McQueen growing upand learning about friendship and trust. This was more aboutmaintaining that. It was a good plot, different, almost a big oil rantbut justified in it's doing so. My children loved it, (Isn't that whywe take our kids to go to the movies in the first place?)hmmmmm?). Idid think the story focused a bit to much on Mater, but he brought ithome. Going out to see the world was a great idea. I couldn't sit thruanother movie only in Radiator Springs again, and you get to see a muchmore wider variety of this wacky but fun world Lassiter created. I gaveit 8 because no movie is perfect. 8 is pretty high in my book. Therewere a few annoyances,I'll let you decide for yourself.

Yeah... I can hear you chanting "Moon - Don - Key.... Moon - Don - Key.... Moon - Don - Key!" You have read my reviews haven't you? You are chomping at the bit for more aren't you? That's right! That's Right! I can hear the applause now!! Yeeeaaahhhhhhh!!!!Wow is this a BAD film. I couldn't even finish watching it. BAD!The biggest problem is the focus on the tow-truck character of Mater. Mater should be comic relief, not the main focus of the movie. Too much Mater just gets irritating after awhile. Also, enough of the pc brainwashing plots. The plot in a nutshell - old clunker cars want to make a fortune on oil so they try to sabotage alternative fuels. That's basically it. Cars 2, like Wall-E, is at its core a movie about telling people what to think and how to live. And like all movies build around a message, and not an actual plot, it fails miserably. One of the worst kids movies I've seen. Sorry - after that killer intro this was a pretty lame review. Probably because the movie was just so poor that I just want to wipe the filthy taste of it out of my mouth and go on to something else.... Maybe bacon. God I love bacon. You know - if you really want to do a good job cooking bacon, you need to get the grease to what I call the "dish soap" phase. The bacon is about done when the grease bubbles a bit like dish soap. Oh... the best bacon I ever had was in Jamaica at a resort. You wouldn't think that Jamaican bacon (that sounds sweet doesn't it... just sort of a ring to "Jamaican bacon") would be good...but I suspect it is at least as good as the Jamaican weed. Big, thick slabs of bacon - salty as heck too. Uhhhhh.....

First to say that it was not as good as the first film but that asideyou will still enjoy this film, it's PIXAR, no matter what they do itwill still have some substance. Starting off with the positives, Iloved the whole cultural and spy genre addition to the film. The filmfocuses on Mater and it's more of a self discovery of his characterthan about Lightning McQueen which was quite cool. They travel a lot inthis film and you see Japan, Italy and England which was really good, and it felt so real because of the brilliant animation. The newcharacters voiced by Michael Caine and Emily Mortimer as spies were agreat addition to the film. However, I hate to criticise a PIXAR filmbut for a sequel it felt a bit relaxed, in a way of thinking "Cars wasgreat, we don't really need to develop anymore" until the whole spyplot kicks in but it should have thrown itself into the new plotinstead of lingering from what made the first one great. Just like how"Toy Story 2" felt like a great sequel. But you will still enjoy thisfilm for the great action and how cannot you not resist a PIXARanimation, they know how to make an animation.

Cars 2 is the sequel to Pixar's Academy Award nominated film, Cars. This film is centred around Mater, not McQueen but Mater who is a rustytow truck with a lovable personality. The movie's basic plot is Materbeing mistaken for a spy while accompanying McQueen throughout theWorld Grand Prix races. First off, I think the movie lacked the ability for the audience to beemotionally attached to the characters, therefore there was not anygreat character development. Everything we knew and loved about thecharacters was not furthered but rather left at how it was in the firstfilm. Luckily, they have built a strong foundation. The film's plot was good but could have been better. Spy Cars couldhave been a good name for the movie. Its creative however a bit sillyat times. It wasn't very predictable but the ending is something youwould have thought of possibly happening, which ruins movies for me.However the animation is amazing and it is a very enjoyable film forwhat it is - an animated spy movie involving cars. All in all I enjoyedthe movie but I expected more from it, especially in the emotionalaspects. Good job Pixar but your standards are slowly dropping.6/10

At this time in their illustrious careers as animators andstorytellers, Pixar Studios are by no means strangers to theconnotations of success. In fact, pretty much singlehandedly shiftingthe mainstream public's attention from hand-drawn animation to digital3D during the late 90's, the studio is responsible not just for a wholemainstream movement in film, but also for providing audiences with thepinnacle of those very movies every summer. Eventually however, eventhe mighty must fall, and despite the initial disappointment of 2006'spredecessor, the studio have went ahead and made this year's focus thatof the same crazy, zany world of CarsÂsomething unexpected, sure, butnot entirely unquestioned.Upon viewing Cars 2 however, you see clearly why. While far off frombeing something of a disaster, this project from director John Lassater(the man behind the first movie, and also some of the studio's betterworks) is nevertheless a true successor to the original in that it toofails to meet the high expectations usually derived from the Pixarname, and plods along seemingly out primarily to please itself. Muchlike Cars, but to a larger extent here, Cars 2 comes across as beingoverly indulgent in all the wrong areasÂit's a movie which can befunny, but only sporadically and seemingly by happenstance; it's s aplaything of Lasster's that never truly reaches beyond the screen andgrabs you; but worst of all is that it's routinely dumbÂsomething thatPixar with intelligent movies such as WALL-E and the touching tales ofFinding Nemo and UP! tend to stray away from.Nevertheless, Cars 2 feels more like an upper-tier episode of, say,Handy Manny mixed with iCarly. There are fart jokes and oil jokes, andan abundance of contrived character conflicts and Learning From YourVanity moral taglinesÂit's the kind of thing that will please theyounger audience, but hey, who the hell is going to deny enjoying ToyStory or The Incredibles, even at the ripe old age of 80? And I guess, that's where the problem lies; there's a split here that is very rarelypresent in the studio's workÂsomething that lesser companies fall preyto every year for the sake that being cookie-cutter straight and safeis far easier to back as less of a risk than say, the first half-hourof WALL-E which has no dialogue. So in saying that, if by some leap oflogic, you're reading this and happen to still be able to count youryears with your 10 stubby digits, by all means stop; you'll enjoy thisregardless. For everyone else however, Cars 2 will no doubt disappoint. Partlybecause of its unapologetic focus on a central character who is thickas pudding (which would be fine, if it didn't infect the rest of themind- numbingly simplistic plot and character development), but mostlybecause the writing itself is entirely unengaging and disconnected fromany semblance of emotion or intelligence. Taking at least half themovie's meagre runtime to finally provide some back-story to theantagonist plot against our returning heroes Lightning McQueen andMater, the movie simply feels uninvolving, boring and even justunfunny. To it's credit, the voice acting is top quality as per, as arethe visuals, but such consolations just don't cut it when this kind oflazy writing drives the cogs underneath. Kids will still love it, sure, but don't expect to find yourself buying the DVD for yourself under theguise of "it's for the kids." This time, despite that Pixar name on thecover, it will be for the kids.
big_ryan15 (07 May 2012)
Let me start out by saying this in no way is a movie for children.Animation is considered an art form, my father in law believes it to benothing more than kids movies. How wrong is he? You'll know the answerafter walking out of Cars 2 with a smile on your face. All the lovablecharacters from the first movie return, with bigger roles along with afew fresh new faces. We say goodbye to dear old Radiator Springs prettyearly on, but hello to rest of the world. Lightning McQueen is invitedto take art in the WORLD GRAND PRIX, run by a Billionaire Jeep that hascreated an alternative fuel to replace gas. Fun ensues. With the leapin technology since the first film, Pixar brings even further into themovie by using incredible point of view shots from inside the car andnext to it, you can really feel how fast the cars are travelling. Iwould love to see the networks stacks Pixar uses to render thecountries used in this movie because WOW are they pretty. We seeFrance, Italy, Japan; its all so pretty. The Story of Cars 2 cruises ata good pace, introducing all the important players from the start.Michael Cain here as Finn MacMissile is great, easily the best part ofthe movie. The action is heart pounding and the heart that Mater bringsto this action movie is a tremendous object to balance the film. I wontgo too far into the story line, just know that this is more JasonBourne or Daniel Craig's James Bond than it is anything else. Gritty, cartoonishly violent and over the top. The visuals here are insane andthe story (as Pixar's always done) has hugely deep under currents allthe way through it, from death and extortion, to gambling, matchfixing, deceit and the race to find a greener way for human kind toexist. Im so glad Pixar is taking steps toward more openly adult films, hopefully the can shrug the childish stigma attached to them.I look more and more forward to their next epic "BRAVE". If its half asgood as CARS 2, they wont have to worry about unlucky 13.Also, seeing Buzz and Woody on screen again during their short at thebeginning of the film mad it more than worth the $10 ticket.8/10 Not their best, but still leaps and bounds ahead of any otheranimation studios out there,
(06 May 2012)
My son loved the first Cars. It's slow moving and sweet with recognizable personalities. Cars 2 is totally inappropriate for him, violent, herky-jerky, with an indecipherable plot. You cannot imagine a real or imagined gun, let alone automatic weapon in Cars 1. Cars 2 has guns a violence in spades. Not a movie you can put on to have your two year old unwind. They made a 180 shift here and I can't understand why. They should have stuck to the toddler market. I think they betrayed and ruined this franchise. Spy movie? Why? WHO CARES! SO bad! From Russia with Love (Two-Disc Ultimate Edition) Don't buy it. If you want a spy movie buy From Russia with Love instead.
Movie_Muse_Reviews (06 May 2012)
The Pixar library stands as modern animation's most impressive by far, partly due to both the studio and Disney's belief that sequels shouldonly be made with the right artistic reasons in mind, namely a goodstory. That's why, to date, we have just "Toy Story 2," "Toy Story 3"and ... "Cars 2" ... ? The original "Cars" has largely been considered the worst of the Pixarmovies, in the same way that Pluto might be considered the worst of thenine planets. So why create a sequel? The answer that's hard to hear isthat "Cars" has done incredible merchandising business compared to theother Pixar films. The less cynical answer would be that its director,Pixar head honcho and young boy at heart John Lasseter, loves the"Cars" universe  a lot. "Cars 2" plays out as a fantasy for a 6 to10-year-old boy, one that cares much more about sheen than story, despite Pixar consistently championing that phrase the other wayaround. In fairness, "Cars 2" does everything a sequel should in terms ofwidening the scope, upping the action and improving the overallvisuals. Pixar set the bar for technical mastery in digital animationand every animator and member of the production team meets thatstandard if not exceeds it. It's the story under the hood thatstruggles, choosing fun as its main objective as opposed to heart. And "Cars 2" has fun by the tankful. Lasseter, Brad Lewis and DanFogelman's story takes the "Cars" universe and throws "James Bond" intoit, a cocktail most definitely shaken and not stirred. The filmintroduces British secret agent cars Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) andHolly Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer) who are trying to find out what thedastardly Professor Z (Thomas Kretschmann) is up to at the World GrandPrix, a new race sponsored by Sir Miles Axelrod (Eddie Izzard), anadventurer who is now promoting his new alternative fuel source.Meanwhile, Lightning McQueen has been busy racing and winningchampionships when he finally returns to his old pal Mater (Larry theCable Guy) in Radiator Springs. It's a short vacation, however, asFormula 1 race car Francesco Bernoulli (John Turturro) has challengedMcQueen to the World Grand Prix. He accepts and brings Mater to Tokyowith him, where our secret agents believe Mater to be an American spyhelping them out. Most surprisingly, Lightning McQueen takes a back seat in to Mater inthis film. Agreed that Mater is one of the funnier supportingcharacters that Pixar has written and in this film he's equally if notmore hilarious, but McQueen's quest to be the best is completelyinconsequential. There's a moment, as is in just about every film wherethe message is about friendship, when he spurns Mater and then latertries to make amends, but it happens so early on. Any emotional impactthe film could have had is zapped thanks to this and the fact thatMcQueen has no bearing on the spy plot. The real problem with the story of "Cars 2" can ultimately beattributed to the fact that it does not necessitate being told in aworld where the characters are all cars and other vehicles. The samestory could have been told with human characters and nothing would havechanged. The car aspect serves only as the chance to be clever with anumber of car-related jokes and gadgetry. Disappointment will resonate with a lot of Pixar fans, yet the truth is"Cars 2" is such a well- oiled machine that it's much easier to discusswhat the film lacked than its strengths. The action, the wit, thecleverness and the impeccable visuals we've come to expect from Pixarmake it a first-rate animated film. However, we've also come to expectan emotional pull, the feeling of being on the verge of tears for evenjust a bit. "Cars 2" doesn't deliver that at all, nor the feeling ofartistic purpose. It feels like a studio making the best movie it couldwith the pieces it already had in place from its financial successful2006 film.At the same time, if "Cars 2" brings in enough money that it fundsanother three years of powerful, intelligent and emotional originalfilms like "Up," "Toy Story 3" and "WALL*E," I can deal with that.~Steven CVisit my site! moviemusereviews.com

We are huge Pixar fans.. love and have every movie, but this was actualthe first Pixar film we seen on opening night. Kids 6 & 7 actuallywanted to leave before movie was over. To me I personally feel as Pixarwas so desperate to put something out to follow an all time great..well at least thats the way I feel about the story line. I would oflike to seen a less violent approach too.. I don't recall ever hearing"kill em" in any Pixar film, unless it was in The Incredibles, but thisis something I would think that such a great company would of some whatworked around in the story line. I would of liked to have seen Cars 2to be successful, but seeing all the reviews now proves that I am notthe only parent that feels they just blew fifty dollars at the movietheater. Again don't rush out to wait in line for this.. It'sdefinitely a netflix rental in my opinion.

I feel quite cheated as i write this summary...the potential that gotthrown away. I am a massive fan of the run away classic Cars, thus whenmy mom told me that sequels exist, i was estatic. Yet my initial dreamsof further cinematic glory fell short to a slew of overwroughtuncomedic sequences coupled with what must be...the worst Englishdubbing Iv'e ever witnessed. Aside from the scene where Both OwenWilson and Larry the Cable Guy dress up as "Negroes" to gain a woman'slaundry, the entire plot made no sense. Why would America's top secretpolice department send these incompetent two into India? The fact thatneither can speak a stitch of Hindi is only half the problem. What madeCars so epic and amazing was its heart. You felt for the characters asthe struggled to make ends meet. You felt the pain when LightningMcQueen's family suffered. In this film all conflicts are ultimatelyunimportant and are taken as a poorly designed vehicle to showcase thefilm's "BONANZA" style of inprobability and foolishness. Good yourselfa favor...don't watch this...just watch Cars again.

This review is from: Cars 2 (DVD) I purchased this DVD as a Christmas present for my car loving son. Since this first movie was a great movie, I expect the follow up to be just as good.

-1 star for the surprising level of violence in a G rated animated film targeted at very young children. Plenty of "you're dead!" and "kill him!" type phrases to fill a book. You get to witness many killings and beatings, and the use of guns and other various weapons are in abundance.-1 star for a weak message. I suppose the message was 'be yourself' and 'love your friends for who they are' but it was weakly incorporated into the storyline. I had to think about the morale of the story after viewing.-1 star for the very complicated storyline. It was a good plot, and the climax was well done, but I can assure you my 3 year old did not have a clue as to what was going on and why.-1 for the political nonsense only the parents pick up on. The earth is over polluted, big oil is an evil mastermind, and alternative fuel is the only road to the future. Just like Wall-E, it left me shaking my head. I wish Disney and Pixar would not attempt to throw in those subtle (or not so subtle) political jabs.As a parent, I did enjoy the obvious "Bond" flavor throughout. I thought it was well done, and the opening action scene really grabbed my attention! However, it left my son terribly nervous and needed holding.Cars 2 definitely puts Matter in the spotlight and leaves Lightening McQueen on the back-burner. Finn McMissile and Holly (the two new main characters) were really well done, but the lack of Lightening McQueen may squash your child's enthusiasm. I may have given this a better rating if it were presented as a PG rated movie, because then I wouldn't have to hold it to a higher/stricter standard. But the amount of violence, on top of the complicated storyline, left my three year old in the dust.
