DICK STEEL (16 May 2012)
I've mentioned more than once that the Luc Besson founded Europa Corpof films are churning out quality action thrillers like how Milkyway inthe East have been doing of late, and with its offerings like Taken,From Paris with Love, and 22 Bullets, I was looking forward toColombiana, especially since it has a female protagonist to begin withso there's a good break from the usual machismo, and it's set in theUSA rather than the usual European jet-setting locations. But the film, written by Robert Mark Kamen and Luc Besson himself, and directed byOlivier Megaton who helmed Transporter 3, was a little bit lacklustrein its final product, which is most unfortunate. The fault was at its core story, where a young girl escaped sure deaththanks to her parent's tips and training, and is off from Colombia onher own wits and ability to live a new life in the USA under theauspices of a trusted family aide (Cliff Curtis). There she grows up,receives an education, forces her guardian to perfect her foundationalskills in assassination, and is off to perform hit jobs to supplementthe family income. During her hits she conjures up calling cards inarrogance in order to lure her enemies out, but as they say, if youplay with fire, you'll get burnt, and fire burns withoutdiscrimination. Which of course led to the expected big bang finale.Wait a minute, couldn't Cataleya (Zoe Saldana) use the resources at herdisposal to track down her enemies, and then finish them all off in onefell swoop since she's quite the bad ass we've come to see through thevarious establishing scenes, such as a very elaborate jailhouse hit jobthat saw her slink around like a Catwoman to showcase both her stealthand physicality? The only excuse I can cook up on behalf of thefilmmakers is that she needed to carry out hit jobs in order to makeloads of money, to afford her all the wonderful toys from nastyvehicles to weapons of all shape and sizes that it will put manycinematic action heroes to shame. Otherwise, it simply made no sense toexpose herself, and in that also to have a romantic relationship sheknows will lead to nowhere for the secrets she's hiding, only to useher partner for sex, and put herself out there under her enemy's radarwhen she should have lied low and hit them with the element of completesurprise. In any case, if you're to take the story at face value, then ZoeSaldana does make an attractive, effective action heroine which is rarethese days since there are less than a handful who can balance gracefulpoise with the physical demands of a role like this one. It's a returnto La Femme Nikita for Besson and perhaps having to dabble with amake-believe grown up Mathilda that never got made (and hopefully nottoo), except that this film got let down by weak plot development, criminal even when it cannot make much sense even if you're stretchingbelievability a little for an action flick, despite the usual premiseset up as motivation for its protagonist in a typical tale of vengeanceof the highest order. There are excesses in the storyline that justscreams at you, when you realize logic would mean having to jump rightinto the final act, because it can and does make sense. The villains are shadowy goons without personality nor posing any realmenace, except for their modus operandi which is to eradicate one'sfamily, presenting very little real and present danger, and many goons, some 20+ of them being compressed into a black and white montage, beingnothing other than fodder for Cataleya to empty lead into. WhileSaldana definitely put in a lot of work to become believable as theslinky assassin, somehow she got upstaged by Amandla Stenberg whoplayed the younger kid version of the same character, having an entire, impressive escape scene in the first act being the highlight of thisfilm that will give Hannah a run for her money, in my opinion. It wouldhave been the huge fight in the toilet with Jordi Molia who plays themuscleman Marco, if not for the artificial speeding up of the moment tocheapen the effort put in.I guess coming up with a lemon is part and parcel for a productionhouse, where everything cannot possibly end up turning into gold. Thenthere's The Lady which is fast proving to become a darling at festivalsand expected to score at upcoming awards, so perhaps it's of adifferent nature for Besson now to put aside heroines who do battlewith guns, for those who do so with their minds to win over hearts. Andthat's clearly not what Colombiana is delivering.

I have to say that except for a few action scenes, this movie wasn't asgood as I had hoped. The beginning was good, exciting with plenty ofaction. Really enjoyed the young actress' performance as the youngColumbiana. Then the movie gets a little boring w/2 dimensionalcharacters and the plot lost its sense of urgency. Whenever there's a story involving a strong heroine, whether a comicsuperhero or a regular person, her romantic lead is always a problem.Should he be sweet and sensitive (he might be too wimpy) and needs tobe rescued by her or should he be just as strong, if not stronger thanher. Another aspect is that the heroine will have to choose betweentheir love and her task...she can't have both. This movie should have been a lot more fun but I would recommend seeingit.

And cold and cool is this crime action drama in which Zoe Saldana(Cateleya) relentlessly pursues the narco-trafficking thugs who killedher parents. Amid the explosive violence, the suspenseful chase scenesand a bittersweet love affair, Cateleya forces us to reconsider theprimal loyalties of family and trust. Notable performances are given byAmandla Stenberg, a delightful child actor who portrays a verydetermined, single minded 10 year old Cateleya, who shows us thegenesis of the huntress Cateleya becomes. The movie, however, is Zoe'sas Ms Saldana epitomizes the hip, fast, cunning gunsel who alwayscaptures her prey, but loses everything she loves and cherishes in theprocess.

Going into the "Colombiana" showing I thought to myself how I needed tobe more open minded. Every time a trailer had come on I'd said, "Whydid the writer of The Professional doe this? This looks like TheProfessional if Jean Reno had taught Natalie Portman more aboutkilling- - which is exactly THE OPPOSITE of what the Professional wasfor", well lo and behold that is exactly what Colombiana tried to be.The film is simply a montage of what an action film should be, andstill, it managed to be disappointing in every sense of the word. Zoe Saldana, who is unquestionably sexy, over-acted andunder-projected; there was no heart in the character-- a 12 year oldNatalie Portman (yes I will keep making Professional references) wasseveral times more intriguing and talented. The rest of the cast shouldalso be judged and condemned for their horribly pompous over-acting,but they aren't the ones on every poster in LA right now. Olivier Megaton put together interesting action sequences andofficially epic sequences, but none of them fit with the tone of thefilm, and would have been better suited as a simple action short. Butaction shorts generally have great soundtracks, and this had bullsh*t.Improbable and over-the-top, not once does the film have the gritty andraw quality Megaton is obviously aiming for. With the glass of milk (from The Professional), scenes almostcompletely copied (the apartment shaft sequence) and non-stopreferences to what an assassin film should be (but never actuallyreaching the standards), "Colombiana" was not worth the $12.50 fortheaters or worth the 4 dollars it will take to rent it. Just skip it.Overall, NOT WORTH IT and NEVER WILL BE.

Totally culturally out of touch with Colombia and Colombian values. I'mat a loss for words why the casting people didn't search for a womanthat is Colombian. You would think that would have been a simple thingto figure out on your own without instructions. Poor acting and poorplot.....overall one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Look howmuch money the film has lost. Don't lose yours as well. The good pointis the young girl has some more exposure to acting and it will be abenefit in the future to be able to compare good productions fromextremely poor productions such as Colombiana. The film really deservesa negative number but do to the fact that beautiful young actress wasin the film it gets a 1/10.

This is my first review in IMDb. I wanted to warn people to stay awayfrom this movie so that you can save your 90minutes of time. wasted my2 hours of time watching this movie. I knew this is movie won't getinto your skin what makes it worse is that you can tell the next scenefrom scene one including the climax. Utter waste of time. Big joke isAgent Ross not sure what FBI/CIA agents are doing in this movie. Icould not watch this crap even after I was half drunk. Do not recommendthis movie even you have 4 hours of free time. you can go for sleep andthat will be best way to spend rather than watching this. Supportingactors are nothing to do except holding cigar and glasses. good thatthey didn't show the first 22 murders.

First time I write a review!I don't understand the mediocre response from a lot of people outthere. This is not the "usual-crap-American-Bruce-Willis-action-movie"if you know what I mean. It has some really neat details, a great storyand acting. In short, I highly recommend it! The body of Zoe Saldanaalone is enough reason for watching it, seriously though, she does agreat job especially with the action scenes moving like an oiled boltof lightning. Besides a good script there's perfect harmony between thedrama scenes and the violent action scenes. There is of course somesimilarities to Nikita, without being a ripoff in anyway. Nikita is ofcourse a classic, but I honestly think this one is just as good. If notbetter? As we say in Sweden: "taste is like the butt: divided!".

C'mon folks. It's PG-13.What were you expecting? A no guts, no glory epic revenge flick? Ifyou've got nothing to do this weekend and you've got time to kill, go ,sit back and be mildly entertained. It wasn't awful, nor was it good. It's exactly what you'll expect. A cheesy action movie.Don't expect any Oscar worthy performances, character development, amazing storyline or VFX.I went to watch this after a hard week at work, and I'm glad I did..Ididn't have to think to much or try to take it in.Go watch this with a group of friends and enjoy some cheesy fun!

Olivier Megaton is a very pedestrian director. "Transporter 3" is oneof the most forgettable action movies in the history of film, so I wentinto this effort with little to no expectations. The only thing thatdrew me to this film was Zoe Saldana, who I believe is growing as amovie star and leading lady, but she isn't given much to work with inthis film at all. She's fairly believable doing most of the physicaland acrobatic stuff, but because of the weak material, her performanceis forgettable and unfortunately on the weak side. The youngactress(Amandla Stenberg) who plays the younger version of Zoe'scharacter, Cataleya, actually did a decent job with the little screentime she was given, and she is involved in the only real decent actionsequence in the film, which is a gritty and visceral foot chase, buteven IT is forgettable right after you're done watching it. Megatonjust can't direct action, he uses too many jump cuts, his camera israrely well placed, his visuals are weak and none of his actionsequences are ever particularly thrilling or fun to watch, he's thebastard child of Luc Besson, who I felt should've directed this filminstead. The music is standard, employing no sense of rhythm or depth in anyscene that needs it, and that's a lot of scenes. There are also acouple of weak performances from the supporting actors such as JordiMollà , who had a terrible "Scarface" type of accent that was so cheesyand forced that I didn't give a damn what he was saying. Theinterracial relationship in this film had no insight or depth to it, itwas just Hollywood being obnoxious like always to appeal to mostlywhite males. DIDN'T WORK FOR ME! There are also some massive leaps oflogic in this film, such as when Jordi Mollà 's character shoots up amoving car from a sidewalk, and when the cops come, no witness pointsout who shot up the car and the man is able to just walk away with noconsequences. WTF? I have a hard time believing Luc Besson co-wrote thescreenplay, it's not clever and it has no ingenuity or intelligencewhatsoever. The pacing is terrible, the film just meanders from onemediocre scene to the next. Also, I don't normally complain about thelack of action in films, but the trailer was so misleading, I thought Iwas at least going to get a fun and action-packed(If disposable) film, but what I got was some repetitive, boring and poorly made trash thatisn't any better than weak action films like "Salt". I'm not thebiggest fan of Zoe, but she deserved much better than this.
Marc Payne (09 May 2012)
Colombiana: Saldana's performance as the driven and proficient killerCataleya is so powerful and so convincing that it takes what wasdestined to be just another action B movie in the vein of 'Fast andFurious' and turns it into something slightly more memorable andunique. Although Saldana doesn't have many meaty character scenes toplay with, she certainly milks all she can out of whatever emotionallycharged sequences there are, as in a scene where she refers to hertroubled past with merely a few basic lines in which to explain this toone of the many antagonists of the film but we hang on to her everydrawn out word and are glued to the screen by her deep and tellingstare. It's the strength of this performance that makes you care aboutthe rather simple but credible storyline.Credit of course should be given to the director, Olivier Megaton, whoafter his last outing with Jason Statham in the considerably average'Transporter 3' has certainly been redeemed and proved himself worthyof a decent and involving thriller. I say thriller, not action filmbecause Megaton chooses to shoot 'Colombiana' as the former  giving asurprising amount of depth to the action sequences and using Saldana'spowerful presence to make them feel smarter and tauter then theyactually are.The only criticism of the film I genuinely agree with is the fact thatMegaton does seem to set the standard of the film very early on with anincredibly exciting infiltration and assassination sequence but thendoesn't seem to be able to live up to that standard with quite the sameslickness and panache as the film progresses on. This particularsequence however is handled with easily the same amount of flamboyanceone would expect from Tony Scott or Michael Bay on a good day and forme was worth the price of admission alone. If you've seen the trailersand know what to expect then you'll certainly get your money's worth(if only for Saldana's performance) and more.Verdict: Saldana should be at the very top of Angelina Jolie's hitlist.  She's certainly her biggest threat yet for this style of genre.Sexy, athletic, tough, dangerous and all convincingly so. Asurprisingly guilty pleasure. See it.Review by MARC PAYNE

I wasn't expecting Coppola or Scorsese but was hoping for some plotcontinuity and feasibility but was pretty disappointed all in all.Example, during a big shoot one of the bad guys answered his cellphone. "Hello", he says! During a shoot out? That least got a chuckleout of me, though I doubt that was what the screenwriter was aimingfor.Unfortunately that was one of the more plausible moments. Went to seeZoe hit the big screen and thought she was shot in pretty harshlighting. Was really hoping for a bit more being a big fan of TheProfessional, which granted took a lot of liberties, but was at leastfun to watch. This, to me anyway, is a rainy day movie.

so ... i went to the cinema today with my sister. We had some time towaste and we chose colombiana. NOW! I don't know what to say to thepeople that liked this movie because it was just simply UNentertaining.lots of stupid cops. seriously, i think the best part about this moviewas the trailers at the beginning. Worst movie i saw in a long time...and I saw "Rubber" this week ! If you really want to see the moviethough, i highly recommend you wait for the DVD. there's not much moreto say about that movie.you should instead keep you night out money for"the tree musketeers" coming out next month. Even if its a flop it wontbe as painful as colombiana... or at least i hope, for the sake ofmankind.

Zoe Saldana does a wonderful job in Colombiana! It was a great movie -exactly what I expected plus more. The movie had the requisite action, strong female character, plus believable emotion. The story was tightand the director did a terrific job of pacing, editing and visualstorytelling. The young child actor was so wonderful: expressive andemotive with a great physicality. I was really looking forward to thismovie and it surpassed my expectations - unlike another Cowboy movie Iwon't name.I hope to see more movies with Zoe in the lead - hopefully, she canfind a franchise.

**Spoiler alert** (If you could call it that).I didn't expect this movie to be a very artistic and moving film atall, I expected it to be an action movie, possibly along the lines ofLeon or Taken. Sadly it was even a terrible action movie. The plot wasn't terrible, but only because there was almost no plot tobegin with. I would normally say spoiler alert, except I can't becausethe plot is already spoiled. The main character is a girl who's parentsget murdered and she goes to America and becomes an assassin. Weessentially have no understanding on why her parents were killed otherthan her parents were in a shady business with the antagonist, and ithas something to deal with information on disks that is somehowrelevant to the U.S. government or something. These points are about 30seconds of the movie in total. She obviously attempts to exact herrevenge a few years later yet the antagonist has protection from theCIA for some reason unexplained. She assassinates people and eventuallyis able to threaten enough people to find her parents killer. Meanwhileher love interest knows absolutely nothing about her, (she literallyjust appears at his apartment and they have never gone out on a date)and he's apparently in love with her. At least something like Taken hasa little plot; Liam Neeson's daughter is taken for slave trade and hemust go around chasing clues of corruption.Aside from the plot, or lack thereof this movie was still bad. We areleft so many times tilting our head to the side and thinking "Really??Really???!?" This includes almost the entire movie. Such things includeher not being seen while hanging from a maybe inch wide pole right onthe side of a building when the police look almost directly at her, toscenes where her uncle opens fire near a school district, police showup in 15 seconds, and police don't even come after him while he remainsjust standing there. This also includes a kill where she stabs someonewith the top of pistol into what appears to be the right clavicle(collarbone). I'm assuming it was supposed to be his neck, but itdefinitely didn't look like they even tried to make this lookrealistic. Oh, and it's impossible to leave out the body morphologicalsoftware which is able to match her photo (randomly, it wasn't eveninformation added to the casefile at all) to a very unconvincingsurveillance video. Please waste your time with another action movie.Go watch Die Hard again for the 1,000 time before you see this, you'llbe much happier.

I saw exactly what I was afraid of. A pure Luc Besson very entertainingand sleepless crap product. Even filled wit pills, you stay awake allalong this high power movie absolutely full of emptiness. No sense atall in this story of vengeance, where the characterization is reallyawful, terrible and every sequence incredible at possible. You couldfill a library only in describing all the unbelievable situations ofthis film. You also may recognize a Luc Besson's piece of work at firstsight. As some decades ago, with Cannon Group - Golan Globus -'s crap.Such a shame that Olivier Megaton - the director of LA SIRENE ROUGE -chose to make films with Besson. He made the wrong choice, see forinstance LE TRANSPORTEUR 3. He penetrates in his own doom.

Since I've been in Colombia lots of times, I was interested in watchingthis movie. Well I was very disappointed, first of all the Colombianspresumably in Bogota are speaking English, ?? and with a bad accent. You would think the film crew would know that Spanish is the languagespoken there, it get even sillier when they greet one another with theword "hola" and then says the rest in English. This is just as silly asin the movie Valkyrie where all the Germans speak English.I don't know where they shot the Bogota scenes, but it's certainly notin Bogota, anyone who lives there, or has visited Bogota will seestraightaway that this is not the correct place. It turns even moresilly, when the scenes changes to Chicago, when they start to speakSpanish, as if it's the custom there. When they screw up in these basicand logical elements, it does not matter how cute and elegant ZoeSaladana is. By the way she's from New Jersey USA.

Another action film produced by Luc Besson? Sure, why not? After all,his B-movies factory brought us various entertaining films (such asTaken and The Transporter and its first sequel), which did not have bignarrative ambitions, but which had enough violence, stunts and drama inorder to work as entertainment which does not require any effort fromthe spectator in order to be assimilated. And all the same can be saidabout Colombiana. The screenplay from Colombiana does not offer anything new, and itlimits itself to show us situations and subjects recycled from similarfilms; but director Olivier Megaton's interesting visual style, alongwith the conviction shown by actress Zoe Saldana in the leading role, rescue the movie and capture our attention with solid action scenes, which do not have any credibility but they are well choreographed andeven ingenious to some point...even though they occasionally fall intothe ridiculous by feeling such convenient (for example, the scene ofthe sharks). Anyway, Megaton brings a good rhythm to the movie, something which was enough to keep me entertained. The performances from Colombiana are adequate, and the member whichmost stands out by my point of view is Amandla Stenberg, who appearsduring the first half hour of the film interpreting the main characterwhen she was a young girl. I almost wished that the entire film wasfocused on this girl who stabs criminals, jumps from buildings andleaves her violent persecutors behind. It might have been like thathypothetical sequel of The Professional I have always imagined, with agirl as a killer. In conclusion, I can moderately recommend Colombiana as a decent actionfilm which fulfills with its purpose of bringing the audience a whileof hollow entertainment. In summary, entertaining but not verymemorable.

I watched Colombiana (2011) on a flight to LA. It was an enjoyablemovie with a simple storyline: a young girl loses her parents to a gangand grows up to avenge the death of her family. The movie helped passtime on the plane, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless theywere looking for a meaningless, shallow film with some action, rubbishplot, and a hot, chocolate chick in it.To summarize my problem with this movie, the outcome of the mainconflict is too obvious and unexciting, and the "love problem", per se,is pretty much left unresolved. (If the no-resolution aspect was meantto work as a cliffhanger, the attempt clearly failed; I wasn't leftwondering. In fact, I didn't even want to think about it.)When the movie was still running, things were interesting; there wereguns, explosions, family, a tough chick leading a double life, and alove interest. It was all good. But by the end of the movie, I was leftwordless, and not because I was wow-ed. They started off with aperfectly acceptable story and threw in a shabby ending that wasclearly not thought out. It was utterly disappointing. The movie doesn't deliver any meaning or message other than the cliché,"What goes around, comes around," or "Good conquers evil." The movieleaves no lasting impression; it is a thriller from beginning tomiddle, but fails to make an impact at the end.The movie is visually appealing and the story seems to have originatedfrom a nice concept, but the writer appears to have been in a hurry tofinish his/her script. Overall impression? Colombiana is a Hispanic, lesser version of Charlie's Angels, minus the Charlie and the other twoAngels.

Cateleya(Zoe Saldana) is a perfect killer, she knows how to get in andout without being detected, also has amazing fighting skills. She isgood with any weapon, a gun, knife, you name it. But in her personallife, she lives a very quiet peaceful existence. She has an artistboyfriend(Michael Vartan). But she slips up, when she starts leavingmarks on her victims. In hopes it would draw the gangster that killedher parents. Then an FBI agent(Lennie James), starts closing in on her.How will this all turn out? Zoe Saldana really sells this movie, as an action hero. It feels likeif Jason Statham was a female, it would be Zoe Saldana. This had somepretty good action scenes, and some good shoot outs, and it has apretty good fight scene also. But it does slow down in spots, and getsa little boring in some scenes. Michael Vartan was alright, he was justthere. But all in all, a pretty good action film.
