This wasn't what I anticipated......

I saw this movie with my 12 year old son on Sunday,September 26th at the theater, and it's NOT what I expected. The storyline was outstanding, but it kept you flip-flopping from trying to figure out what was going on the entire time....which is great if you like suspense as well as I do,but personally,I didn't like the ending at all! I was literally tripping out trying to figure it out,but my son figured it out from the very beginning...so either I'm stupid and he's smart,or the ending just really spoiled the entire film for me.Needless to say, neither me nor him want to see it again, and if my husband rents it when it's available on dvd,my son and I will make other plans for that evening.Sorry folks, but this movie was definately not worth our money, and I never want to see it again!

Stare at a pie.....same effect.

This is a movie about 5 or 6 Highschool kids that start a rumor that akiller is on campus. Each student dies one by one throughout the movieand so do their careers. If I were an actor in this movie I would haveprayed they killed me off first so I could get the hell off set. Thisfilm was unrated, but could have been rated G...for "god awful". Therewas no violence or nudity, which took my focus straight out of themovie. Also the Chinese girl fits into this film as much as the fat kidwho sits in front of you in philosophy class fits into his seat.Somehow these kids had the vocabulary of Harvard grads, yet when theytry to execute their stupid game, they fail at a sixth grade level. Iwould rather sit through seven consecutive episodes of "Tyra" than gothrough that modern day torture again.

Cry_Boredom

I hadn't planned to watch this movie, but I was invited over to afriend's for free pizza, and this is what he had on, so...A group of prep-school students play games of deception with eachother. Inspired by a death near campus, they make up a story about thekiller having killed before at another campus. Supposedly he willrepeat the pattern of (fictional) killings at their campus; the storyspreads and freaks some people out, while others think it's a riot anddress up like the killer for fun. However, someone really did kill a woman and it seems he learned of thestory they created and isn't happy. It's an hour into this hour and ahalf long movie before anything starts happening, though!Frankly, the movie is pretty boring. It was nice that the highschoolers were played by actors who might have been the right age, orclose. The ending has some nice, if predictable, twists - but it's toolittle too late.I watched the unrated DVD, but it's difficult to understand why it wasunrated. It was a pretty standard PG-13 movie, if that. What was good was the two short films by the director that were extrason the DVD, Manual Labor (2002) and The Tower of Babble (2002). Theywere quite entertaining and clever, and were far far superior toCry_Wolf.

Pleasantly surprised

I must say I was not expecting this sort of storyline- "a long con" asit were, sophisticated and well acted. Everyone should know that Dodgeris trouble from the beginning- especially when like Eve in Eden, she'ssitting there, plotting and holding an apple (although the Evestereotype isn't true). But it really is a movie that keeps youguessing, instead of it being some run of the mill teen-slasher flick.I must say I was pleased that Jared Padalecki doesn't die in this one,as he has died in every other movie I've ever seen him in.All the actors were great considering the fact they are young, and evenBon Jovi was good.Fun movie which is a great throwback to Hollywood's classic"Whodunnit's".

Very good, yet flawed

Is there really a killer on a secluded high school campus? If so, whois doing the killing? What is the order of the victims? What is themotive? Things are not as they seem in this twisty slasher/thriller.Not a typical teen slasher flick. What makes Cry Wolf stand out is it'simpressive acting by the teen leads as well as intelligent dialogue andbelievable actions by the characters. There are also some excellentsuspense sequences that work, including a gut wrenching chase sequenceinvolving Lindy Booth. I also think that they did get away with thePG-13 rating because the bloodless murders were actually warranted. Notwith suspense, but with the story. One of the flaws however of Cry Wolf, is you can tell it's editedbadly. Swear words are badly dubbed over to get the lower rating, aswell as some blood and gore from the murders. I know you don't needblood and gore in murders for them to be scary, but you can't just editout blood and gore randomly and expect the murders to make sense. Also, the cinematography was awful. The camera was very shaky and I couldn'ttell what was going on at times. The ending, looking back on it, is weird. One part is predictable anddumb, but the other part is clever and twisty. I guess when you thinktwice about it it all makes sense. I think it could have been executedbetter, but it was still okay.I will wait to see the directors cut on DVD to see if my opinionchanges.

An interesting thrill ride.....

I really enjoyed watching this movie. The cast was great and the acting was above par. The settings were not so great, as it could've been filmed at much scarier prep schools. Overall, the story follows pretty well, but the beginning and middle don't quite fit with the ending. If you try hard enough you'll be able to figure this one out, but you'll NEVER BE SURE till the end.It was lacking on horror and gore, but came over HUGE on the thrills and twists.Very fun to watch.

Same old with a different taste

There were no advanced screenings of Cry_Wolf. Of course, like mostpeople, my idea was that it was a horrid movie that the studio didn'twant to open to bad reviews. Well, now I've changed my mind. Instead, think of this as a Sixth Sense kind of thing- twist ending. The movie centers around Westlake Prep school and a bunch of rich kids.Dodger( Lindy Booth) is the head of this little group, and obviouslyneeding to prove something by being extra devious. The rest of the kidsare the stereotyped teens that always appear in moves, the jock, thesarcastic girl, the goth/punk kid- who has way too many piercings to beallowed in prep school, and the token black guy,. The school is shockedby a murder of a local girl just about the time our main character Owenshows up. He's invited into Dodger's world and their game, where theytry to lie to each other and accuse to win money. Soon they decide tobring the game school wide and invent a serial killer- The Wolf. Butthen what they invent becomes real. I really liked the pace and the colors of this movie. The school wassurrounded by trees and forests in fall, which at night added to thefeel of the film. Everything hides in the shadows. Something I hadtrouble believing, and not because it wasn't well done, was Gary Cole, who is Owen's absent father, is British. It's hard to see someone likehim trying to use an accent and it just doesn't fit. The director hintsat what's to come in the rest of the movie during a scene in thelibrary. A book hanging off the shelf, Sartre's No Exit, is thrustbetween the two characters- of course the obviousness of the placementmakes me wonder if the director has heard of subtlety. This movie was not a horror movie, nor a thriller. It should beclassified as suspense. The blood and gore is very limited so the faintof heart would be safe with this. Scream and other 90s horror moviesset up the sarcastic, poking fun at themselves story lines with snappyone liners. It was the "new" spin on horror. Cry_Wolf doesn't do this.Perhaps because they're trying to fit in with movies of the 2000s, withthe twist endings. It's almost impossible to see a movie these dayswithout a twist ending. Even without all of that, I still enjoyed theidea. The end was odd but so well explained someone who had missed therest of the movie would understand. With not much in thethriller/horror genre out right now in theaters, Cry_Wolf is good forsatisfying your craving. But if something a little more straightforwardand gory, I'd recommend a trip to the video store instead.

Cry_Wolf ~*caution-spoiler*~

Let me start by saying that I am a huge horror/suspense movie fanatic, and also that this contains spoilers. Anyway, Cry_Wolf started out asyour regular horror movie (it was a cool addition with the whole cellphone thing, though). The way it unraveled, however, was quite unique, and I really liked the movie. The ending was slightly annoying, and I'dhope that Dodger was eventually punished for what she did to Becky, although I doubt that :). I think that the relationship between Owenand Dodger wasn't really romantic, but more sexual and mysterious. Iwas a little disappointed, since I had hoped that Mercedes, Tom, Reginaetc. had actually died, and the whole setup thing was kind of a letdown, but the ending was sort of haunting. Another point that botheredme was that the writers sort of broke Dodger's mysterious air by makingit over-the-top obvious that she was always going of to "do her ownthing", i.e. planting the gun in professor -----'s office (what *was*his name?). Other than that, I thought Cry_Wolf was a very uniquehorror movie, and I enjoyed the fact that it really does resemble theoriginal Cry Wolf fable.

Watchable, but not a horror movie...

this movie is nothing more than a psychological thriller, like Number23 Secret Window. Though not scary, it is fully engaging.Basic Story GuideOwen Matthews in the new guy at Westlake Preparatory Academy, and onhis first day is invited to a game in the school chapel with othermembers of the school, a game called "Cry Wolf." The game is simple, figure out who the wolf is and eliminate them by discovering the hisidentity. But soon Dodger, the "school queen" becomes bored withplaying the same game night after night with same people, and decidesto play the game, with the entire school. The next day, she and Owenmake a killer, capitalizing on a murder of a town girl a few daysprior. They then send an email all over the campus and the students eatit up and start telling everyone about it. But as the rumors beginsurge, But as Owen begins receiving IM's from someone callingthemselves "the Wolf," Owen and his companions begins thinking that thelie they made is fast becoming a reality.Notes (this is where I tell you things about the movie I enjoyed, andhated about the movie): I absolutely loved the pace of the movie, not too fast paced so thatyou missed something, but not so slow you are bored out of your skull. But there are parts that some of the actors were just overly dramaticin their lines, which annoyed me. I'm not saying that all lines wereoverly dramatic, just some of lines were could have been left out, andwouldn't have affected the overall outcome of the movie.VerdictAs the title of my review states, this movie is not a horror movie. Itis not scary, not blood soaked fun, it's a psychological thriller likeSecret Window, or The Number 23. And believe me the ending is somethingyou will never see coming. This movie gets inside your mind and it justwon't get out. So for those looking for a horror movie, look elsewhere. If you looking for a thriller, you have found it. 6/10

(26 April 2013)

This is high school. Nothing's for real.

To keep it very simple, this movie is cheesy. It's basically a teen movie, complete with corny teen movie soundtrack, about some high school students who pull a dangerous stunt on campus, attempting to convince their classmates that there is a killer lurking about. It's just barely entertaining enough to hold your attention and keep you mildly amused. The story takes a few turns and ends no better than it begins, in the vein of "twist ending" suspense films. Cry wolf is neither scary nor gory - and there is certainly nothing "Unrated" about the movie or this DVD edition. No nudity, gore or cursing... I don't quite understand. This movie might be good for some amusement if you have nothing else to watch and need to kill some time. It's not completely terrible, but there's nothing that stands out about it, either.

i rate it 7 out of 10

i saw this movie over a week ago and let me tell you it's a movie youshould definitely watch. if you like pretty good acting, incredibleplot settings, and being kept on the edge of your seat through most ofthe movie waiting to see what will happen next, you will like thismovie.Julian Morris was great in this movie it amazed me to see somegood acting for a change. Most of the time in movies like these there isREALLY BAD acting.Lindy Booth wasn't to good in this movie.I kept ongetting the feeling that she just wanted to crack up laughing rightthen and there and thats not good that means she really wasn'tbelievable.Jared Padalecki was unbelievable in this movie i would saythis movie was one of his best!!Jon Bon Jovi (i feel) could have donebetter it was not his best compared to the movies he was in that he wasgood in, like ROW YOUR BOAT,and THE LEADING MAN.as for the rest of theactors, they were okay not the best but not the worst. but all fornothing it was a good see, something you could sit through and getinto. because when it comes down to it the storyline and the base ofthe movie matters most DOESN'T IT.

when good premises go horrible awry

I was basically dragged to this movie by one of my friends and didn'treally want to see it that badly. That might have affected my voteslightly, but it doesn't change the fact that I didn't enjoy thismovie.I was never scared, or even tense. I was barely eveninterested. The only time I jumped was only slightly because there was aloud noise, and I had completely zoned out, it was almost like beingasleep and someone grabbing you to wake you up. Not the type of scare amovie would want. The movie had a terrific premise, but something went wrong with theexecution. The acting was decent at best. The ending was pretty good, but by the time it got there, I no longer cared about what was going tohappen. The movie was incredibly predictable, and we pretty much knewwhat was going to happen. Two of my friends figured out the ending(basically)within about 10 minutes. That's not saying this is the worst horror movie ever, but it wascertainly not great. By today's standards, it was good. But today'sstandards are incredibly low, and most teens today do not know a goodmovie. They are taught to believe that stupid movies are good, thengood movies go over their heads. I've seen movies that have trulyscared me, and if I want good horror, I shall watch them. But I willnot watch this again.I suggest, if you really want to see it, wait till it is in a secondrun theater if you have one. If not, wait till it's on DVD and rent it.It's not worth the price of a theater ticket.

Great

I personally thought this movie was truly great. I'd been waiting tosee it for some time after seeing an ad for it on AIM and bought itwithout really thinking two days after the DVD release. I was prettyskeptical about it because of the horrible movies that have beenreleased so much lately but when I watched it I was greatly pleased andam still held in suspense when I watch it. Also when I do I findsomething new every single time. I also enjoyed the Saw-type endingthat led you to believe so many things that may or may not be true inthe movie. This movie was a masterpiece in so many sense especiallyconsidering the amateur crew and I was not let down one bit.

Cry_Wolf was FREAKIN AWESOME!!!

Cry_Wolf would have to be one of my favorite movies of the year. It hadVERY good elements of cinema and contained an AWESOME plot. This moviewill keep you guessing till the end. HIGHLY recommended. Also, anotherway to make the experience even better, go to www.crywolfgame.com andplay the online game, it will make the movie even better. The storyrevolves around a few main characters as they go through their collegelife. They decide to play a game, very similar to "mafia" just withsome of the names changed. After the game is over, they decide to makethe game even better by playing it with their entire college campus. They make up a killer and decide what he looks like, how he killspeople and his weapon of choice. Very soon after they send out thee-mail to everyone on campus, their small group of friends startsdisappearing. Strange things begin to happen to this group of friendsas you tag along for the ride in this action thriller. It will keep youguessing till the end, and won't let you down.

Easy To Wolf Down In One Sitting

I picked this film up for 8 bucks at the local video store. I mustconfess to being a fan of the genre (thrillers) but was stillpleasantly surprised to find that Cry Wolf was a cut above many of itsantecedents. (Skulls comes to mind) It's sort of a Dead Poet's Society(prep school setting) meets April Fools Day (plenty of pranks),thematically. The cinematography is imaginative and the two leads,Canadian Lindy Booth (Dodger) and Brit Julian Morris (Owen) acquitthemselves very well. Jon Bon Jovi is not bad as the mysteriousjournalism professor. A film with more than a few twists but all ofthem are plausible within the context of the story. The dialogue workswell and the pace of the film is quite good, spending enough timedeveloping character while the plot moves along. With this callingcard, director Jeff Wadlow and co-writer producer Beau Bauman can lookforward to a bigger budget for their next outing.

Like French Fries without Salt and Ketchup

Bland. Lacking. Not much fun and probably bad for you. Some rich private school students grow bored playing "the lying game"amongst themselves and decide to involve the entire school. A youngwoman was killed off campus and the students send out an email with theinformation that it fits the m.o. of a serial killer. They believe theyare playing a joke, but when the killer shows up on campus, they beginto wonder if someone in the group is taking it too far. This movie isn't bad enough to hate. It reminded me of the old slasherfilm April Fools Day, although Cry Wolf isn't really a slasher film.On a side note about the DVD. They have audition tapes of the actorsand the young woman playing Mercedes is particularly good; charming andintriguing. But she barely registers in the movie itself. I don't knowwhy that is.

bonJOVIbabe (20 April 2013)

an innocent high school prank gets blown way out of control when a created killer appears to be real!

i really love this film, the twists in the plot leave you hanging offthe edge of your seat! Its got a good pace and the characters are allso different, the film has been well cast as well displaying a goodrange of personalities. I think that this film looks deeply into theway a high school prank can become very serious despite the innocenceof the culprits themselves and therefore the film is quite thoughtprovoking. Jon Bon Jovi, although with quite a small role in the filmdoes a good job, he is a very talented actor with successes on thescreens behind him, he fits in well and looks the part, Well done Jonon another great performance. (i'm not sure whether my summary was aspoiler or not so i said it was, just in case :D)

(19 April 2013)

Not total crap, but still crap

Cry Wolf is pretty much like any other slasher film that you may have seen in recent years. The plot is pretty simple, although somewhat original. A group of friends at a private high school decide to start a rumor of a serial killer on campus, as they try to trick all the other students into believing that a murder that happened near campus was really just the beginning of a serial killer's work. The acting is simply terrible, but that's ok, I didn't rent Cry Wolf for the acting. I even rented the "unrated" edition, and there was still absolutely no gore whatsoever, and that was what really disappointed me. The only thing left for a slasher movie to do that hasn't been done before is kill the uninteresting main characters in a somewhat interesting way. The beginning of the film, where "the game" is set up, and the main character, Owen, gets to know all the participants isn't actually all that terrible. The beginning is the reason it gets two stars and not one, that and the fact that it did have me guessing to a certain extent as to how the mystery was going to be solved.Needless to say, this movie includes all of the classic stereotypes of a slasher film. So only rent this one if you know what you are getting into. For slasher/horror aficionados, it probably isn't that bad that you just see it to see it, but anyone else, this movie probably isn't for you.

Tranquil Sob

TRANQUIL SOB...a review for Cry Wolf Cry Wolf Columbia/Rogue 2005 Color92 minutes Horror-Thriller Julian Morris, Lindy Booth, Jared Padalecki,Jon Bon Jovi, Gary Cole and Jesse Janzen star.Written by Beau Bauman and Jefferey Wadlow Directed by Jeffrey WadlowRated PG-13 for some language, violence and gore Cry Wolf is more likea tranquil sob. The PG-13 rears it's ugly head for good reason in thisdecent teen horror thriller with a lot of cool ideas and not enoughimpact. Lindy Booth of Wrong Turn and Dawn of the Dead remake famestars as Dodger, a young woman whom organizes lying games at herschool. Beautiful pretty boy Julian Morris stars as Owen the newtransfer at the school. For fun, her and her friends invite the new boyalong to play. They decide to create a massive email concerning themurder of a townie that appears at the beginning of the film. Theysupposedly create a killer with dire circumstances as the pranksupposedly becomes real. Everything is questionable in this film andthats for the good. It has some nice little twists and a tight ending. But the film blunts it's impact every step of the way. instead ofrelishing in it's target genre. And accommodating itself with harsherdialogue, sex appeal and more suspense. It teeters along the wayexposing one plot line after another with little to no effect. Themovie instead ends up as an interesting homage to better horror films.Although much better than the Urban Legend and it's clones. Cry Wolfdoes lack gore but thats not it's problem it lacks maturity whendealing with it's storyline and the performances are definitely a cutabove field but the initial impact of whats happening and why seemstranquil and effortless. With a little more punch this could've been akick ass little horror flick. Although advertised as a slasher flickthe film has little to do with that genre and lends itself more towardsa suspenseful drama with horror touches here and there. Rounding outthe pretty cast are stud Jared Padalecki of the wonderful remake Houseof Wax and hot bad boy Jesse Janzen. Jon Bon Jovi also stars in thefilm looking bored as a questionable professor. But Booth is the realstar here she delivers the film's final twist with pizazz and talent. She needs to look for more of a powerful star vehicle for her self. Shewas definitely on her way with the excellent underrated Wrong Turn andkick ass remake Dawn of the Dead. she needs to ride the brutal horrorwave and gain a following. I'm sure the film will fare better on videoand DVD it's a good film but just not very memorable.***(Out of five)
