This Christmas, primary school teacher Paul Maddens is charged with producing the schools nativity play. Competing against the posh rival school for the honor of best reviewed show in town, the stakes are raised when Paul idly boasts that his ex-girlfriend Jennifer, a Hollywood Producer, is coming to see his show with a view to turning it into a film. The only trouble is - they havent spoken in years. With eccentric assistant Mr Poppy fuelling his little white lie, Maddens suddenly finds himself a local celebrity and at the center of quarreling parents and over-excited children desperate in their bid for fame and fortune. Maddens only hope is to get back in touch with Jennifer and lure Hollywood to town so that everybodys Christmas wishes come true.

This review is from: Nativity! (DVD) Nativity is a great holiday show. My daughter told me about this movie last year and after seeing it and laughing throughout the show I just had to get it. It is a fun addition to my holiday library. It is one show I will have to watch every year.

At a small Roman Catholic primary school, production of this year'sNativity play is allocated to a hugely unwilling Mr Maddens. When hisidiot classroom assistant Mr Poppy foolishly repeats Maddens' unwise adhoc comment about Hollywood visiting the Christmas play, the whole towngoes mad with excitement. This slight conceit is driven by the engine that is Mr Poppy and, as MrPoppy is essentially a big child with no common sense whatsoever, thewhole edifice is balanced precariously on an implausibility ofmonumental proportions.Yet somehow this doesn't matter. I hesitate to use the word "nice" inview of how anodyne it can be, but there is an overwhelming nicenessabout this little film. Martin Freeman's customary put-upon everymanpersona is absolutely suited to the role of Mr Maddens, and MarcWootton as Mr Poppy will either irritate the heck out of you, or tickleyou: he tickled me. The rest of the cast all offer sterling support andthe kids, who could so easily be obnoxious showbiz kids, are actuallyrather sweet (even the posh kids at the competitive private school). There is a subplot about lost love which brings other areas ofsentiment into focus, and the film ends, of course, with the majorproduction which is the Nativity play in question.I laughed from time to time but, more importantly, I smiled all the waythrough - this film left me feeling warm and happy.

My daughter and I rented 'Nativity' from Blockbuster last year at Christmas time. I had never heard of it but thought it looked cute by the cover. After watching it and laughing out loud, I checked the web for anyone selling a copy. I couldn't find it anywhere. When I took the movie back to Blockbuster I begged the cashier to sell it to me. He did. :) So glad to see it on Amazon this year. I will be getting some copies for my sisters' and brother's families. You'll love it!

This review is from: Nativity! (DVD) Really good Holiday movie with British sense of humor/the absurd. Accurate depiction of Hollywood, not so accurate depictionof a British school unless every child is adorable and talented. Adding to my Christmas CD/DVD library--

Nativity centres around a 30/40something primary school teacher who, being a loser in love, has allowed himself to become bitter andresentful towards his pupils.Needless to say he needs to win back the love of his life and re-findhis love for his job, and people in general. It comfortably falls back on the rich British heritage for nicey niceromcoms and does a fair job. Not one aspect of any of the characterscame as any surprise or helped to enrich a two dimensional plot - butwho cares, its a Christmas heartwarmer and it does its job well.Marc Wootton, in particular, was excellent as Mr Poppy and both hisvisual performance and his well drawn out character were responsiblefor the majority for the laughs - the remainder falling on the narrowshoulders of a funny looking kid, well cast for his comedic value, butpossessed of a face that I was sick of seeing after 90 minutes ofobvious set ups, but then that's probably because I'm as misanthropicas the lead character!I took my seven year old daughter, and she absolutely loved it. Ifyou're not a parent and hate children, this is definitely not for you.If, on the other hand, you love Christmas and still have a tender, warmspot in your heart then you could do a lot worse than to go and seethis.

This review is from: Nativity! (DVD) We happened to run across this movie on Netflix last Christmas season. We think it's a real gem. One of those movies you want to watch at Christmas every year.

This review is from: Nativity! (DVD) I stumbled upon this movie on Netflix and decided to give it a try because I like Martin Freeman. Little did I know that by the time it was over I would be captivated. When the contract ran out on Netflix I wanted to watch it again so badly that I bought it and I'm not sorry. Without giving away too much of the plot the story is basically an underdog type movie. The children are told to do a Nativity play for their school, a school not known for its excellence, shall we say, and Freeman's character is the teacher in charge. Enter Mr. Poppy, a child seemingly stuck in a man's body hilariously played by Marc Wooton. There is a romantic back story which added to the plot but didn't distract from the thrust of the story. One of the things that amazes me about this move and it's sequel, Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger (that I have yet to see) is that they are all improve. That's right. No script! Yet the children as well as the seasoned adult actors do so well that I never knew it until out of curiosity I researched it. This has quickly become a Christmas favorite and everyone I've shared it with has loved it. I now eagerly anticipate it's sequel which has not dropped below the #5 spot in the UK since it's release, falling just behind the new James Bond movie, Skyfall, and taking the #2 spot behind The Hobbit, also starring Martin Freeman. (Why neither of the Nativity! movies were released in the US is no mystery, Hollywood is interested in blockbusters over quality) Nativity! is the little movie that could, and when I watched it I understood why it did so well in the UK.

The reason I thought this film would be better is that its meant to bea family film. To quote Debbie Isitt at the premier tonight 'Its a filmfor children, with children at its central theme'. The film is about a teacher who's acting career never took off andended up in a job he hates. My six year old son tried to take his DSout of his pocket and play it, he was so bored. The first thirtyminutes are dull and over stretched and have nothing to entertainchildren. The do come in and out, but nothing happens for far too long. When it does kick off, its great. I gave the 6/10 for the last twentyminutes. The best bits, as always, are in the trailer. The cameos are far toounder used (Alan Carr's role was screaming for a few minutes more onscreen time).I want the British film industry to grow and prosper, but dumping thisin cinema's and aiming it at kids is self destructive. You want to makea film aimed at kids, have a main character who is a kid. Not two dozenall trying to get a minutes air time. Have at least one scene with justthe kids in it, or more. Don't use them as plot devices or extras orprops until you get to the big song and dance number, let them havestory lines and be individuals.

This film leaves you with a warm feeling in your heart.I don't agree with some of the minor negative comments on this forum. This is a simple easy to watch film and you should not try to overanalyse it like some have done. The plot is simple, the kids are fantastic and Bob steals the show aswell as your heart.Yes this is a low budget film but they must have had loads of funmaking this film.If you want to see a film that makes you feel good then this is the onefor you.

This review is from: Nativity! (DVD) This was a cute Christmas movie that I will pass on to my grandchildren. Martin Freeman is a favorite of mine and he was especially good in this, playing a bit of a curmudgeon. But love wins out in the end.

My kids and I LOVE this movie. I just wish two things. That the soundtrack and Blu-ray were available in the U.S.

I only rented this movie because it was free in the PSN store on Christmas without knowing what kind of movie this is. I decided to watch this with a 9 year ago sibling. This ended up being the funniest movie I've seen in a while. The characters from Mr. Poppy to the children are extremely hilarious. The ending was sweet and watching the children sing I had a good time watching this. This is probably the 1st British film I've seen that I can recall. This is now my favorite Christmas movie. I only wish this movie was available on Blu-Ray. I highly recommend this movie to EVERYONE.This movie deserves a definite 7 STARS out of 5 Stars!!

Without ever having heard of this movie before, I decided to watch it (airing on Showtime) while wrapping Christmas presents. I typically multi-task with the TV as my background noise but with this movie, I found myself so hooked that I stopped all my tasks and focused only on the film. It was funny and heart-warming, without the sticky sweet schmaltz and the songs were very catchy. In a television landscape of commercialism, I found this little gem to be such a treat. I will definitely buy this movie and make this part of my holiday ritual every year.

This review is from: Nativity! (Amazon Instant Video) I don't know how we stumbled upon this movie but the kids and I love it and have watched it a few times. My husband thinks we're nuts but I don't think he has good taste when it comes to humor :) either that or we're easily amused. This cute & quirky Christmas film is sure to give you lots of laughs. We especially enjoyed Mr. Poppy & Bob and it was fun to watch the school nativity play come to life.

I went to see this film with my mum after a Christmas shopping trip andwas amazed by how good it was. The problem with so many Christmas filmsis that the 'ideal Christmas' they end up presenting isAmerican-centric and very materialistic, consequently it was veryrefreshing to watch a Christmas film about a non commercial Britishtradition. It was also a very sweet film that managed to stay the rightside of saccharine, without giving away too much I liked how the filmmanaged to be positive about all of it's characters and not just theobvious heroes. I also thought the film was genuinely funny and pitchedat all levels well from the silly (the children's auditions) to thefairly witty ("Those who can't act, teach, and those who can't teach, teach primary school" isn't a line I'll be repeating to my teacheraunt). All in all this is a lovely Christmas film for the entirefamily!
