Even though this one didn't have Will or Elizabeth in it, i thought it was awesome! It may even be my favorite one out of all of them. I loved the mermaids and Blackbeard. Jack was his usual comical self and the remaining cast was superb!

I have just seen this and I loved it mostly. Not as good as the others, but I didn't expect it to be. It exceeded my expectations in some ways, but disappointed me in others. It might seem over critical of me, whenyou read this review, seeing as I would give the first three 10 out of10, and this an 8-9. I enjoyed it very much, but if I had to compare toothers, it has to be marked down.I thought Johnny Depp was again superb. As I adore Captain JackSparrow, (Johnny Depp) I had to see this regardless of what the reviewsmay say. A slight change in character in my opinion, but not a badthing. The character Jack Sparrow is lovable and often mysterious, clever or lucky rogue, and this time his character opened up a bitmore, to reveal more of his caring and genius side. Depp neverdisappoints. The only downside is that the trailers show the biggestand funniest one liners, and I always wonder why the producers do that? It's annoying!!Rush was brilliant as "Barbosa" as he always is. He had a difficultrole to play in this one. He wasn't full Barbosa until the end, becausehe couldn't be. It was a shame, but maybe it would have been too clichéif he had. It's a shame though, because I loved the character Barbosa, and in part that is what I wanted to see, but the story didn't allowit. That is not Rush's fault. He still played a blinder.Gibbs was Gibbs. It was nice to see him back even if we didn't see muchof him. Other characters were missed, which I *think* left a big holefor such small roles. Lee Arenberg (Pintel) and Mackenzie Crook(Ragetti) for example, that made a good double act, that increased thecomedy appeal. There was to me, a lack of good supporting actors, andthat was a real shame. This made me realise just how good these smallerroles were in the first three films. The supporting actors wereinstantly forgettable, which is a shame for them as much as theaudience.Penélope Cruz was superb in my opinion. A great actress in this, verybelievable and a great addition. I personally think she had the most toprove in this, having to take over *in a sense* from Keira Knightley. She did a great job. I know that, rather unfairly, Cruz was one of thecharacters that I was worried about, but she did brilliantly. She wassexy and feisty, and played the role very convincingly. There's greatspark between her and Jack, and dare I say it, I think her role wasmore convincing than Keira's. Maybe that's unfair though, becauseclearly, they are two different characters. It was just a shame thather character seems to have been "plucked" by the writers like most ofthe others in this film.Sam Claflin, was another new comer, and a new actor. One to watch outfor in up coming films I think. I think he played a blinding part. Verysincere, hugely attractive. It does seem like he was a co-incidentalpart really, which is a slight shame. His character wasn't reallyexplored enough, and I found myself wanting to know more about him.Maybe it was just simply clever directing, as to not give away too muchto the audience, or maybe, they didn't want to over cook the role, making him a character filler for losing Orlando Bloom. Which likeCruz, is really what they were, character fillers. Either way, a greatcharacter, played by a skilled new actor.Last but not least, Ian McShane as Blackbeard. He played a good role, but to me no where near as good characters as Barbosa in the first, andDavy Jones in the second and third. He basically had command of a"sword" that didn't really do much. He was "ruthless" right until the"end" but to me, it wasn't enough. His character was too shallow. BothBarbosa and Davy Jones were allowed enough time for the audience tofully discover them, and they were frighteningly interesting.Blackbeard wasn't a patch on that, and won't ever be either. His crewthat he "zombified" were unconvincing to me. The whole "Blackbeard" bitwas the biggest disappointment, and that is a shame. This one lacked the special effects of the other three. I thought thefilm had two great bits. The first, in London where Captain Jackescapes as only Captain Jack does. Brilliantly lucky! The second wasthe Mermaids. Very good indeed, but not "spectacular" to me at all incomparison to the other three. Will there be another? I'm not convinced. Cruz ends up left whereSparrow was left in the first. Barbosa returns to his post ofcaptaining a ship with power, and Jack Sparrow ends up being older andwiser, with no "real" aspirations, other than just appreciating being a"Pirate" Never say never though. I would like for there to be another, but equally, I am satisfied with the one's we have now. Having lostsome of the ingredients that made the first three superb, the forth onemight just be enough now. The writers would have to really pull the catout the bag to make a fifth in my opinion. They would have to resurrecta fair bit, but would that make it just a hash of the first three? The success of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy has got to be allthe ingredients though. That's everything from the main characters, tothe supporting roles, special effects, writers, screen play anddirecter. This fourth instalment was stand alone for sure. With achange of directer, that's maybe how it should have been to survive afourth instalment.

There were many things I liked about this film. I love Capt. Jack and found his antics funny, as usual. I also loved the mermaids (the song the first one sings is beatiful and haunting) and just the overall LOOK of the film. There were some great action sequences and I thought the introduction of Blackbeard was well done. Penelope Cruz (whom I was worried about before I saw this...I mean, a love interest for Jack Sparrow? Dicey) did a great job and I liked her character. Some things I didn't like...the 'zombie' crew of Blackbeard's. They aren't explained (the rest of the crew is tricked into serving) and I can see no reason why they couldn't just have been regular pirates. The Spanish...why are they there? They aren't really a threat and their appearance at the end seems to be for no reason other than to speed up the ending by creating a bit of extra tension. They seemed more like plot devices than part of the story. And then, loathe though I am to admit it (being a pretty big fan of the first three movies) but I felt like a lot of this movie had been seen before. I mean, many characters reappear (but not Will and Elizabeth, which I thought was sad), and many of the action sequences felt that they'd been done before -- there's the 'Jack flying through the air to escape (twice!)), the ship being destroyed, the hiking through the tropical island, etc.Overall, I think it was a good movie and I'll probably buy it at some point if for nothing else than I Love Jack Sparrow and the mermaids were amazing. Did this movie NEED to be made? No. Is it as good as the other three? No. But it's still worth seeing, especially if you're a fan of the other films.

I have seen this movie 3 times in theaters and it has yet to get old.Although not as good as the first film, I can honestly say that this ismy second favorite movie from this great franchise. One majorimprovement from the other films (dead mans chest, at worlds end) is noORLANDO BLOOM. I know a lot of people loved him in this series, but inmy opinion I feel he is to much of a "pretty boy" to be a Pirate! So ifyou liked the past three movies then you will definitely love this one!The new director also does a great job. We all know that it is toughbeing the "new guy".But this "new guy" came in (with a lot of pressurebreathing down his neck) and dominated!!!!!!!Sincerely, The Beast from the Southeast

I'm a HUGE fan of the Pirate series of movies...can tell you the next line before they say it kind of fan. (yeah I know...get a life :P)First time I saw this movie I was disappointed. (Over the top expectations?) Seemed to me the returning characters were more like secondary characters. Not enough Jack/Barbossa or Gibbs. I also missed Will/Elizabeth.Found myself on a rainy day with nothing to do so took my daughter to see it again. Second time around I enjoyed it much more! It is different than the first 3 but not so much in a bad way. I think that was my disappointment the first time I saw it. Was expecting (hoping?) for the same type of movie as the first 3. After I got over that part I was able to enjoy this movie for what is is. An entertaining movie that does follow (to a point) the other 3 but just hmmmm different? I also found that while not as much as the first 3 the other characters were a big part of the movie (well...maybe not Gibbs so much?)That said I do with they had filled in a few more blanks between 3 and 4. They did a little but not enough that really told what everyone was doing since 3. Also not one mention of Will/Elizabeth. Those 2 things would have really helped bring the stories together. There are some inside jokes that if you haven't seen the first 3 you won't get. That said it is also a movie that could stand on it's own although not recommended! Watch the others in order before this one.Hoping when it comes to 5 (and from what I hear there will be a 5) they try to add a little more of 1,2 and 3 in with 4 to make another 5 start rated movie! Recommended.

Similar to the original in mood and tone, this movie is definitelybetter than the third movie in the series. But not the best in theseries. Its strictly average, even for hardcore Johnny Depp fans. This movie has wafer thin storyline, little action, little comedy andnothing feels complete.Everywhere on the screen you see Jack Sparrow and little of othercharacters.Even his character has got nothing new to offer! Just the usualwitty(is it still witty at all?) last minute escapes.Even the Visual effects weren't awesome or anything, just OK.The thirdmovie does a better job in that category. Just another movie sequelthat is made for squeezing money!

Well, the good news is that Pirates 4 is better than Pirates 3. The badnews is that it is no better than Pirates 2, and probably not as good.Let's look at the good and bad. It is entertaining and undemanding, excepting only a need for stamina - it is overlong. The story hangstogether reasonably well (as long as you are prepared to overlook "Howdid he know that was there?" all the way through - Ponce de Leon's shipon top of a remote cliff, for a start off)). Depp's Sparrow is alwaysentertaining company, and Blackbeard is also a welcome villain(although McShane's accent is a bit indecisive). Penelope Cruz neverreally catches fire, however, and Geoffrey Rush seems to be just goingthrough the motions. With the exception of a chase in London and a nocturnal mermaid-baitingexpedition, there are no set pieces on the scale of the cavernswordfight in the first one, the waterwheel fight in the second, andthe whirlpool battle in 3. That doesn't really matter, because the restof what goes on is sufficiently entertaining - I particularly enjoyedthe interplay, sketchy though it was, between the cleric and theconflicted mermaid. There are a couple of massed battles, but theydon't achieve much - they are simply well-choreographed mêlées of a lotof blokes clashing swords about.I will say that the film is very dark (my father complains about modernfilms being predisposed to darkness and muted colours, and I see whathe means here). When things are light, the colours are vivid, but a lotof this film takes place at night, and the 3D specs darken things downstill further. The 3D is at least live, not post-production, and iseffective at times (especially underwater), but it is far fromessential.I'm glad to be spared Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, but I missedthe comedy relief pirates and soldiers. And, while I enjoyed this one well enough, my memories of how excellentthe first one was are still strong enough for me to say, "I'm glad yourecovered from number 3, but no more now, please."

This review is from: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (DVD) I was glad to find this DVD on Amazon. The only format sold in stores was the DVD/Blu-Ray combo pack and this was a gift for someone who does not own a blu-ray player and I didn't want to spend the extra money. Of course it's a great movie, Johnny Depp is in it!

Its hard to generate the same great fun when you go into a whole newdirection. Without the cast of characters that we had in the firstthree it didn't feel right. Sameness or at least familiarity is notalways a bad thing. Yeah, Geoffrey Rush was here in make-up that madehim less recognizable but this was Johnny Depp's movie without anydoubt because he was the most recognizable face in the cast, and maybethat was the idea. Ian McShane was the perfect Blackbeard. He wasBlackbeard as one would imagine him to be. The other characters we'venever met before and didn't feel a whole lot for. As in the first threethe FX were spectacular and maybe a little effusive. We never had thismuch "magic" or fantasy before but maybe that took the place of themissing familiar characters. A lot more talky than we would like. Infact it reminded me a little of Matrix Reloaded. 6 out of 10 for mebecause it didn't have the same sizzle as we're used to in thisfranchise.

I'm a movie buff, I love them more than sports. I watched this with mybuddy and we are both fans of the originals (3rd was ify but stillwatchable) When I heard they were making a 4th i was like smh... buteven though i had low expectations, i still had to see the movie. Imglad i did. The story line is actually pretty good,in a way beautiful. They are searching for the fountain of youth, and the adventure to getthere is very entertaining. The side story with some other charactersis very good! It was almost as if you were watching a love storyunfold.Solid score, makes you feel for the characters. Is this epic? Ehhh insome ways, I feel its more "adventure." Johnny never disappoints in hisroles so no need to talk about him. Cruz is attractive and does herpart well.Overall, impressed. I wont be surprised to if there is a 5th. My guess, there will be.

I'm not a huge fan of the series... I remember loving the firstPirates. I saw that one at the theater with my now wife. I remembersleepwalking through the second one. I caught bits and pieces of thethird, but have still never really sat through the whole thing in onesetting.Enough time had passed by to let me give this series a new chance lastnight. I was committed to going in without reading too much about it,and watching the film in its' entirety. There were many strengths and weaknesses here - so it might be best ifI break it down that way.Strengths: Johnny Depp is still charming and witty, and Jack Sparrowhas little to nothing to do with this series' decline.Penelope Cruz wasn't nearly as annoying as I usually find her to be.The set-up was decent. The film did showcase some nice visuals, and it had some really goodideas. The one that stands out is the first Mermaid sequence. It was afresh take, and easily the most exciting scene in the entire movie.Weaknesses: I love Geoffrey Rush, but Barbossa as a character here ispoorly written and has completely lost his backbone.Blackbeard is also poorly written and also seems a bit weak. While this isn't as long as some previous entries - it still seemsoverlong.Too many characters that are under-developed.The film suffers from some of the same, extremely unrealistic fantasystuff, and I'm not talking about "the Fountain of Youth". I'm talkingabout Ropes that move on there own etc. These types of issues haveseemed to get worse as the series moves on. I know it's a fantasy film, but Pirate lore is based in fact and I wish the entire series wouldhave been a little more realistic. It could have still been fun.-------------------------------The good news is I made it through it. More good news is I won't again. The bad news is they'll make another. The really bad news is that manyof us will pay to see it. I won't. I'm done with the series. Eventhough I missed much of the third installment - I think I can say withconfidence that this thing hasn't been right since the original.44/100

All I needed to say after seeing this movie was good sequel, fits into the series well. Enjoyed the refreshing new cast Especially Penelope Cruz and story. Will be buying it when it comes out. Again may not be your favorite of the 4 pirates installments thus far but defanitly a good solid film. Can't wait for the 5th installment.

This review is from: Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides [HD] (Amazon Instant Video) Honestly I did not expect much from this movie.I watched to see Penelope Cruz. Not much of a story line , Typical special effects.Johnny Depp is just phoning in the lines anymore. They should definitely stop making these.

I really liked the first of the series, great fun and interesting characters and a story while fantastic in terms of ghosts and ghost ships, contained some wit and heart. As far as I'm concerened it's been downhill ever since. And this last installment didn't reverse the trend. Characters in search of a story is my view. Thought the first 20 minutes or so were very entertaining and thought they might actually been on to something. but alas after the exciting and funny coach escape, it was all downhill from there. And does this group ever do anything in the daylight? One dark and dingy scene after another. Why bother with exotic locations when you never get to see any of them. Sorry folks - three times bitten (the three sequels to this point), ever more shy. Captain Jack and his merry band will do whatever they want in the future without this man's support.

After the disappointment of the third Pirates film, I knew there would be a break. However, after a four-year break, producer Jerry Bruckheimer decided to take the franchise in a new direction. Instead of continuing where the story left off at the end of "At Worlds End", Bruckheimer thought it would be best to start fresh with a new plot line."On Stander Tides" is about Captain Jack Sparrow trying to find the fountain of youth. He is competing against his old foe Captain Barbossa and the Spanish to find it.With the new plot and characters, "On Stranger Tides" is better than "At Worlds End" but is nowhere near "The Curse of the Black Pearl".If you are a fan of Captain Jack Sparrow, you will find this film entertaining as Johnny Depp does a great job as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Thomasamills (07 May 2012)
I remember when I first saw Pirates of the CarIbbean. I loved it. Itwas silly, but at the same time loads of fun from start to finish. I,like many fans of Curse of the Black Pearl highly anticipated thesequels. Again, like the first film I enjoyed them. Wonderful popcornfun, full of funny characters and entertaining set pieces. Then thefilms ended and I was pleased with what I saw. Did we really need afourth film? On Stranger Tides reunites us with the crowd pleasing Jack Sparrow, portrayed by non other then Johnny Depp. But where is Orlando Bloom? What has happened to Keira Knightly? No need to worry pirate fans, thewriters have given us a Orlando Bloom look a like who is a preacher. Hewill fall in love with a mermaid. Problem solved? Well, not really.Although the other three films where the Johnny Depp show, OrlandoBloom and Keira Knightly were still part of it and are missed in thisinstalment. However, Geoffrey Rush is back as Barbossa and KevinMcNally returns as Gibbs. But these characters returning doesn't addanything to the film at all. Not even the talents of Penelope Cruz orStephan Graham help, and Ian McShanes Blackbeard is such a boringvillain. I couldn't help but appreciate the inventiveness of Davy Jonesin the previous two instalments whilst watching him on screen. The film hasn't got a plot or a point to it either. Different groups ofcharacters are looking for the fountain of youth for different reasons.A bunch of stuff happens along the way and thats it. No, seriously, thats it. It's a film in which stuff is happening, but nothing actuallyhappens. Although it can be argued that the same happened in the otherthree films, at least they were fun. This film is dull, tedious andvery boring.Rob Marshall, the director has given nothing new or exciting to thefranchise. Its Johnny Depp doing Jack Sparrow for over two hours. Whichwas fine before, but this time I found myself becoming annoyed at thecharacter. I think Johnny Depp gives a good performance, but afterwaiting all these years for a sequel to see him do the same thing, butonly not as good or funny is just one huge disappointment.I didn't hate the film, I was just so disappointed. There is no fun tobe had in this dreary film at all. All you do is watch things happen, watch people talk, then things happen again, then people talk again, then things happen again and it just doesn't end. On Stranger Tides islifeless, unexciting, tiresome and pointless. Captain Jack, enoughsenough. Lets just call it a day.
romanoszak (03 May 2012)
The first three films are now a big part of the history of cinema andno one can deny that. ''On Stranger Tides'' is a worthy sequel to thosefilms.Of course, Johnny Depp is once again incredible amusing as Captain JackSparrow, showing you his acting skills one more time and why he wasnominated for an academy award for best leading actor for the same rolein the ''Curse of the Black Pearl''. Every time he is on screen, hispresence is so entertaining, you'll just want more more of CaptainJack. So we have our favorite pirate back -who is also one of the mosticonic character from the 2000's...but what else?Geoffrey Rush returns as the cold-blooded pirate captain, HectorBarbossa. This time his story is evolved just like in the previousfilms. From an evil villain, a guest star, and a tritagonist he hasbecomes now a huge supporting character. His performance is of courseexcellent, the motives of his character are very interesting and I giveyou my word, you will love his last scene!!!Penelope Cruz is better than I expected, I'll give her that. Shemanages to appear as the complete equal to Jack Sparrow's cunning andher role in the story is extremely important. Plus, she is so hot!!!But what is a good movie like this without a menacing villain? IanMcShane is perfectly cast as Blackbeard, the ''pirate all piratesfear''. Even from his first scene you realize that he's not messingaround and that he will stop at nothing in order to get what he wants. The only bad thin about Blackbeard is that I expected him to be....moreevil...don't get me wrong, he was very cruel, but still...The rest of the cast is very good as well. Kevin McNally is funny ashell in the role of ''master'' Gibbs, just like he was in the ''olddays''. Astrid-Berges Frisbey is incredibly cute, hot as the mermaidSyrena and she gives us a very interesting sample of her acting skills.Sam Claffin is also very good as the priest caught prisoner byBlackbeard and falls for Syrena and he has some very well writtenscenes. Stephen Graham is incredibly amusing as Scrum replacing Pinteland Raggeti as a comic relief and Keith Richards, Richard Griffiths,Greg Ellis and Oscar Jaenada all have small but important roles. Thewriters Terry Rosio and Ted Elliot give us a clever script based on thenovel ''On Stranger Tides'' and Rob Marshall directs in a very goodway, just like Gore Verbinski. To sum it up, is very entertaining movie for every age and a worthysequel to the previous films and it cannot be missed. It's not perfect, but it will make forget your problems and take a deep dive into theamusing world of the Pirates of the Caribbean.

This review is from: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Five-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) This review is solely for the 3D aspect of the movie. I really enjoyed the film itself but there's plenty of other reviews that go into the plot and content so I wish to solely concentrate on the technical aspects of this transfer. In terms of set up I have a 50" LG plasma Z750P 1080p TV with a 3D Panasonic Blu Ray player piped through a Sony 7.1 3D-compatible HDMI receiver. By far the best two movies to show off this set up are obviously Avatar 3D (which I received in the mail for free as a rebate for buying the Blu Ray player) and also the Hubble 3D documentary narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. These two movies, along with a couple of others, show crystal (and I mean crystal) 3D imagery at incredible resolution. Unfortunately Pirates 4 OST does not live up to that standard a lot of the time.Graphically this movie is dark. As you may know you can lose about 25% brightness when using active shutter glasses but this is usually balanced by your TV upping the brightness accordingly. Unfortunately most - I'd say 70% of P:OST is set at night in swamps or dark galleons. This left a distinct gloominess when watching in 3D and probably the same when watching in 2D too. It's a shame the plot itself drove this decision as really there was no reason for the darkness at all. The very lengthy section with the mermaids could just have easily have been shot during the day but instead you're treated to torches and black sea. What am I looking at?But by far the worse offender is the blurry 3D transfer especially towards the end of the movie. Very distinct double images can be seen especially when Blackbeard keeps thrusting his sword towards the viewer. A lot of the time however, mostly during the brief day shots the 3D is incredible and so it's especially jarring to be thrown back to night time and back to the blur-fest. I read that the special effects were done in 2D and then ported to 3D. You just can't do that; it just doesn't sit with the footage shot with real 3D cameras. You have to go all the way, as with Avatar, or not at all. Combining post-production rotoscoped pseudo 3D like Alice in Wonderland or Clash of the Titans just doesn't sell 3D for those who haven't enjoyed the real thing. It's a shame on a huge franchise such as this so laden with effects that such a decision was made with regards to the rendering of the SFX.The audio of course was stunning - amazing sound and surround so no complaints there.Overall I'd give this a B- for 3D. It's not as bad as completely fake stereoscopic images like the aforementioned Alice, but it's no where near as good as the real deal.Buy for the movie itself and not the 3D.

Let me get this out of the way first: Pirates 4 is not a bad movie. It's just not as crazy, silly and entertaining as the other three are(yes i'm even a fan of the third installment though i had to watch ittwice to get it). First: it is supposed to play in the Carribbean- butwhere is the Carribbean? Scenery-wise i felt at times i was watching anepisode of Lost, all jungle-ish. Plus i expected a little moresea-action. Whats the point in watching a pirates movie if they don'tdo "piratey" stuff?!"Johnny Sparrow": this is not a typo. Johnny D. owns the part by nowbut he isn't really in his best form. My guess: all the crazy Sparrowis was enhanced by the presence of Will and Elizabeth (albeit to alesser degree) who represented the "normal" world and especially woodenWill provided Sparrow with the moments to shine i.e. Wills naiveapproach to all things vs. Sparrows fiendishly cleverness . With thesetwo absent the movie suffers from one big problem: it has no heart (anda lot less eye-candy)Concerning the Orlando/keira-stand-ins (aka priestand mermaid)Why not take the originals? They did a far better job thanthese two completely forgettable actors with the charisma ofchopsticks. Blackbeard: so this is the most menacing pirate ever? Yawn.just because black is his favorite clothing-colour doesn't mean he ismenacing. But he is a master at the wild eye-rolling technique. KristenStewart, take note. My summary: the filmmakers should have gone withwhat works: The chemistry between the leads. It's not like peopleexpect a revelation from this movie they want to see the charactersthey come to love.

I was not expecting this one to be quite as good as it turned outmainly because of the review I read of it that made it seem really bad.I have to disagree with that review, however, as I found it a goodmovie, better than the second and third installments of this film, butnot as good as the still best first one. This one sort of picks upafter the third one in that the object of everyone's desire is thefountain of youth as the pirate Blackbeard, the English and theSpaniards are after this most magical of places. For the waters ofyouth to work one most first get two silver chalices and a mermaidstears. Jack at the moment is in England, but he shall get around quitea lot in this one. His old nemesis and sometimes partner Barbossa isalso back this time seemingly in league with the English. The action inthis one is rather good and Captain Jack Sparrow is once again the bestcharacter, only this time he is the main guy with no others taking timeaway from him in bunches like the previous two installments. Thescenery in areas of the film is just really gorgeous once they get tothe area of the fountain of youth. There is also a very nice mermaidscene to be seen as well, just enjoyed most of the film. Granted thereare questions one has while watching this film such as Blackbeard'smysterious powers that are not really explained and if it was I missedit, however I had questions like this one for all three of the othermovies too. So a good movie, better than Pirates 2 and 3 for me and anice ending to boot. I do not know this one just flowed better than theprevious two pirate movies. At least for me, the one review made thisfilm sound very slow and not all that entertaining aside from a coupleof scenes. I guess I just enjoyed seeing Captain Jack Sparrow back sansOrlando Bloom and Keira Knightly who I feel had to much screen time inparts two and three.
