Flawless CGI, a tale worth telling but written at a comic book level

Red Tails is a story that was overdue for the big screen with a bigbudget, and it certainly received the best special effects of anyaerial combat movie I've ever seen. It's not just difficult to tell thedifference between real world airplanes and CGI airplanes here, it'simpossible. The tell-tale "objects floating in space" giveaway has beenovercome, and for once the CGI planes finally seem to behave and movelike objects in the real world. That being said, one of Red Tailsweaknesses is that it's been dumbed down and oversimplified to makeitself accessible to an audience of small children. Dialog andcharacters come straight from comic books. Perhaps the Germans receivethe worst of it, as they've been reduced to sneering villains withoutany sort of personality at all. That being said, the acting lives up tothe material, for better or for worse. It's acceptable, but not award-winning. No one was nominated for any best actor awards for the StarWars movies, either, so that's understandable. As a military historybuff, I do wish the tactics were better represented. The dogfights havemore in common with Hollywood's traditional view of what aerial combatshould look like rather than what it was actually like. Red Tails isnot following in the same footsteps of Saving Private Ryan or Band ofBrothers, though. It's an easy to grasp history lesson for young peoplewith simple heroes and simple villains.

This film is NOT a tribute!

It's a pity that a weak, ignorant, make-believe bit of film gotattached to a band of real-life warriors. It's a pity that the truestories of how the Tuskegee Airmen and the 332nd Fighter Group foughtand died for this country were so often distorted or ignored, andreplaced by 2 hours of slack-jawed Hollywood stupidity. As if thereality wasn't important enough, interesting enough, or dramatic enoughfor a movie."Red Tails" does not honor the men of the 332nd. The movie constantlyhas it's pilots flying and fighting stupidly, irrationally, andsometimes impossibly, then awards them victories when in reality theywould have been either shot down or grounded. The REAL Tuskegee AirmenEARNED their victories by being both smart and good! If the filmmakershad really wanted to preserve the their good memory they would haveinvented a fictitious group of black pilots for their movie instead ofplaying with the reputations of the real men who accomplished so much. The only reason why I rated this film as high as a 6 and not lower isthat other than the historical slurs it otherwise fits my definition of"sub-standard Hollywood schlock". It's a film that you can spend twohours laughing at, or simply staring at in stunned amazement by itsseemingly endless sequences of the stupidly impossible, the stupidlyimprobable, and the stupidly pointless. A great film to keep youconstantly amused by playing 'Spot What's Wrong Here'. A film thatshould only be seen for free, and even then only when you've nothingelse better to do.

Terrible story line; worse acting; poor historical values

I am a military historian of sorts, and when I saw the way theyportrayed the Luftwaffe; I was appalled:In the ending battle scene:1) The protagonists wipe out an entire flight of 262's in less than 10minutes! Historically, the only time that may have happened is whilethey (262's) were on the ground.2) The 262's attacked the fighters as well as the bombers, strategically, the 262's with their armament (4x 30mm cannons), stuckto the 'heavies' as targets and left the escorts to deal with the 109'swhich were much more suited for dog-fighting. Good and well trainedLuftwaffe pilots kept their speed up in the jets in order to keep theiradvantage and avoid conventional dog-fighting.3) On several occasions, the P-51's were being struck with the jet'sfire, and living to tell about it! Imagine 30mm shells entering thecockpit and striking the fuselage without creating damage. One pilotsurvived for several minutes after being struck by these shells, crazy.Further, I have never seen such poor acting, which is disappointing assome of the actors in it, are good actors. It is as if nobody had timeto review their scripts, or there was a big hurry in production.George - What happened? After The Empire Strikes Back, you have donenothing but regress as far as your film talent goes.

Most racist film of all history

Imagine if this film was reversed. White people were terrorizingNegroids, and every fight they had Negroid high command that told themhow worthless they were. Then when the white people went to fight, there wasn't a single casualty, but they killed hundreds of Negroids.I'm pretty sure there would be multiple lawsuits. Then, after the whitepeople returned to the Negroid high command, the Negroid high commandwas like "wow you white people are so much better at life than us, wewill bow down and be your farm equipment for as long as we're of use".All of the black people in this film will be portrayed as pure evil, somewhat similar to the super villains portrayed in the Disney movies.

exaggeration of the importance and accomplishments of a few colored/negro pilots

I was initially interested in this film because I had heard of theTuskegee Airman but not seen a feature film about them. I started towonder during the first few minutes "WHO made this stupid movie?"Quickly you will be disappointed in the finished play of this movie, which looks more like a cheap television production. As if there wasn'tenough drama really going on in WWII Europe, we now have the portrayalof these black pilots who of course always seem to be right on the markand superior to the German pilots they fight against, and the whiteAmerican pilots that are racist (of course) against them. There isalways lots of 'hoopin' and 'hollerin' in celebration after all thesuccessful kills, as well as really cheesy dialogue. These pilots arevery independent and usually one up their ordered missions. Thisscreenplay always creates an exaggeration of these pilots skills, theiraccomplishments and their importance at a time when in actually the USAhad already lost huge numbers of servicemen all over the world. Oh, andthere is a totally uninteresting love story of one of the black pilotswith a local Italian woman with a phony-boloney accent (guess thatblack/white racism was just an American thing, (SPOILERS) cause she'sall over this guy and confesses her love pretty early in and latermakes the decision to marry him). There is also another pilot or maybeit was the same one, that was 'the best pilot' one white officer hadever seen. (SPOILER) That black pilot was also an officer and singlehandedly gets to punch out a few white officers who don't appreciatehim coming into their all white officers club. The movie goes on andon, and it pains me to recall all the rest. But they overcome all thebias against them and earn everyone's respect. (of course :) In factthey are later welcomed by their white counterparts who just want tobuy them a drink because they are so great. Thats pretty much it exceptfor some really bad acting throughout and especially during thedramatic parts like when one of them is fading in and out ofconsciousness after his plane was hit moments before his fatal runwaycrash. The End!

"Tails" Doesn't Straight Up and Fly Right

For 24 years, George Lucas has been developing a film about theTuskegee Airmen, the all African American squad of army pilots duringWorld War II. Now, the dream has come true and the final result of "RedTails" is a too long, tedious, all noise and no heart time killer. Itmakes one yearn for the memories of Lucas's "Star Wars" and "IndianaJones".In 1944 Italy, a group of four army pilots has been summoned to protectbombers over Germany. Along the way, they have encounters withfriendship, romance, danger and overcoming death. The film's director, Anthony Hemingway should have stuck to directingTV shows before filming this lackluster effort. John Ridley and AaronMcGruber's script feels third rate and mostly shifts into territoriesof melodrama and clichés. They should have taken out the bad subplotinvolving a romance between an Italian girl and one of the pilots andremained focused to expand on the story of the Airmen. The artdirection looks like it's been borrowed from too many movies and theaction sequences fails to generate any thrills. The visual effects fromIndustrial Light and Magic add no excitement to the action. The young actors playing the pilots {David Oyelowo, Nate Parker,Tristan Wilds and Elijah Kelly} and the acting veterans {Cuba GoodingJr. and Terrence Howard} feel like they're taking their rolesforcefully instead of seriously. Both Gooding Jr. and Howard proved onething in their respective roles: They were both in the film just forthe money. All in all, this fails both in entertainment and as a history lesson. For the past four decades, Lucas wowed audiences by showing them howmovies can take people to brand new worlds with "Star Wars" and "Indy".Now, this time, he has failed. Both Lucas and the Tuskegee Airmendeserved better. In the end, the best thing to come out of this is the thing before thefilm itself. The "thing" that I'm talking about is the trailer for theupcoming and hopefully very funny "Three Stooges" movie.Rating: 1 star

George Lucas in his typical post 1980s form

**First let me preface this by saying, I'm a WW2 buff and believe thatthe Tuskegee airmen have long deserved more attention and credit thanthey have received. It's just too bad such a bad movie was made to payhomage.**Red Tails.... the dialogue.... SO WOODEN!! And unbelievable. And therewere pauses between lines that lasted a good second too long! I walkedout 5 minutes into it. Even the action in that first five minutes...they found a way to make it unexciting! I'm not sure how. But it's thefastest I've EVER walked out of a movie in my life!I can only conclude that Lucas had his hands in this movie FAR beyondwhat his EP (executive producer) credit would imply. I've seen some ofthe director's other movies, and they've been good, or at least OK. Itcould be that some of the blame lies with the writer?? But the stilted, wooden dialogue really does seem to harken back to some of Lucas'srecent outings. Namely Episode I and II. And it IS his studio(Lucasfilm), after all. So I'm sure he must have been involved muchmore than otherwise would have been desirable.

A fantastic story that plods amiably in a Sunday afternoon special.

Red Tails is a two-hour skim through the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first squadron of black American pilots to fly in WWII. Asinspirational stories go, it's up there with, well, most based-on-truthinspirational stories. The achievements of the squadron, known as theRed Tails (all will be revealed in the film if you don't already know),are remarkable bearing in mind the terrible prejudice they suffered atthe hands of their superiors and the very countrymen they weredefending, not least of all with the broken, rattling, dying hunks ofmetal they were forced to fly.In 1925, the US Army War College published a study in which it stated,Blacks are mentally inferior, by nature subservient, and cowards in theface of danger. They are therefore unfit for combat. How's that forbacking? When that text fills the screen at the start of the film, oneis left wondering Why did they bother? Fortunately, they were moreinterested in doing what was right than exacting revenge or becomingbitter. It is a superb story of good overcoming evil and the upliftingconclusion is no surprise to anyone living in the 21st century. But does a fantastic story of triumph over persecution make for aperfect film? It did with Schindler's List but, alas, this is not thatfilm. From the start Red Tails feels wrong. The 20th Century Fox image andmusic play, followed by the Lucas Film logo and then… What? No crawl? No Star Wars? It's like taking a swig of coffee only to discoversomeone made you tea instead; not bad, just unfamiliar. George Lucasproduces, leaving directing duties to Anthony Hemmingway in his featuredebut after years as second unit director, 1st A.D. and director ofsuch TV shows as True Blood and ER, but Lucas' influence is obvious inthe dog fights and the liberal use of CGI in lieu of reality. The 'unreal' look and feel of many of the aerial sequences is a fairlymajor complaint but is understandable, if not acceptable, as there areonly a limited number of period aircraft available to shoot with. Whatis far less palatable is John Ripley's screenplay. This is anotherfeature debut from a man who has written for television for twentyyears and the plodding exchanges highlight that. More of an issue isthe lazy editing causing pauses between verbal exchanges that are longenough to take comfort breaks in.Much of Ripley's dialogue is clumsy and obvious. He's trying to performballet in clogs and it just doesn't work. That said, his TV years havemade him a wiz at the one liner and he serves up some real delights, towit: "We a long way from heaven but black Jesus is with me and he saysit's going to be a successful mission." The overriding impression is ofa half-assed, overly contrived The Victor adaptation that strives forSaving Private Ryan but misses even Memphis Belle. As a whole, Red Tails is a great deal better than some first efforts(Tom Green's Freddy Got Fingered) but falls short of many notabledebuts (Gary Oldman's Nil By Mouth, Duncan Jones' Moon etc. etc.) andone can only hope that Lucas gives Hemmingway another chance to buildon a moderate success.Another film review from The Squiss. I enjoyed

I don't know what is wrong with most reviewers about this movie. Allright....everybody has his own opinion but...damn...somebody is so meanabout judging a movie that , yes, it is not an Oscar drama-war orsimilar but I truly enjoyed to watch for several reasons. Complainers(pretty sure!!) cannot make it better if they could!!! After all it's amovie. Please relax and take it easy. The real crap that sometime isrunning on the big screen is different. I give 10 just to raise thepoor average that it doesn't deserve at all. My personal vote is anhonest 7 and 1/2. The effort made deserve better consideration. Whoeverwants to see this movie please don't consider the bad reviews that youcan read here. Go and watch by yourself.

Flawed in every sense of the word

Over twenty five years after the fact and Maverick has become a drunkwho makes hasty decisions under the influence, Goose has become a bitmore reckless and still puts women before anything else, and Iceman'srole has been reduced significantly as his smug arrogance is only feltin a handful of lines. What's that you say? Red Tails isn't the urbanretelling of Top Gun? Well, you could have fooled me. It's not that itmakes much difference though. No matter how you look at it, Red Tailsdoesn't really have much of anything to offer. At the peak of World War II, African American pilots are considered thelowest of the low. They're considered to be incapable of performingtheir tasks to their country to the fullest and are given leftovermissions that don't even qualify as scraping the bottom of the barrel. The Tuskegee training program is no different as the entire squadron ismostly reduced to shooting down trucks, trains, and perhaps a cow everynow and then. That is until Colonel A.J. Bullard (Terrence Howard)succeeds in letting the higher ups give his men a chance and they takefull advantage of the opportunity.Red Tails feels really cheesy as soon as that quote is shown in theopening scene. The movie has a $58 million budget, but it certainlydoesn't feel that way considering the opening credits. The amalgamationof planes ripping through the sky and tearing each other to piecesfeels like a distraction or a cover up for the rest of your senses. Tryto pay attention to the credits, how plain they are, and how cheap theylook. That along with the score that feels like it was ripped straightout of a stereotypical action film from the 90s doesn't really seemlike the type of tone they were going for here. The acting isn't muchbetter as stiffness and monotony seem to be what they were aiming for.The Tuskegee airmen do begin to get a bit more comfortable in theirroles as the movie progresses. David Oyelowo takes Lightning thefurthest as far as Easy's (Nate Parker) squad goes, but they certainlyseem their best in the face of tragedy. Terrence Howard has a few greatmoments, as well. Specifically his "highest expectations" scene heshares with Joe "Lightning" Little. But it isn't enough to save asecond-rate film. The script is very dry. I don't mean dry humor I mean about as pleasantas trying to listen to somebody with a mouthful of saltine crackers. Itfeels so stale and again contributes to that 90s atmosphere I mentionedearlier. Keep an ear out for the Americans and how third grade theysound. The dialogue along with the monotonous tone spread out amongstevery actor in the film makes everyone come off as a robot. "These cowsare armed," is a line that's actually used in the movie. There are afew lines that are almost decent. Winky's (Leslie Odom Jr) line wherehe says, "Every time I close that canopy I feel like I'm closing thelid to my own coffin," is surprisingly good. It gives the momentarybelief that things may turn around, but they never do. Smokey's (Ne-Yo)"colored" conversation at the bar is the most amusing thing Red Tailshas to offer, as well. There are many lame attempts at humor that justmake you groan. Black Jesus is perhaps the worst joke of all, considering how things turn out for Deke (Marcus T. Paulk).George Lucas fought for 23 years to get this made, but after viewing ityou'll more than likely be convinced that the man has grown senile overthe years and that retirement from Hollywood is the best thing for him.The turnout for the screening was insane and you can bet that Red Tailswill more than likely make a killing at the box office, but there's noway in hell it passes as a good or even decent piece of cinema. Amateurcinematography, a boring script, terrible acting, and the fate ofcertain characters being extremely predictable (you can guessLightning's fate around the time things start getting serious withSophia), Red Tails is the equivalent of a stand-up act that gets booedoff the stage. It is just awful. I was left wishing the entire moviewas just Cuba Gooding Jr lifting a pipe to his lips, pulling it away, and pretending to smoke the entire film. If it was just those clipsstrung together with no dialogue and that dubstep track from the TVspot in the background, I could have at least gotten a good laugh outof it.

Steven Spilberg, Where were you?

I love war movies, I love history, I love airplanes, and I'm a brotha. So this should have been the perfect movie for me to see. Not quite. This story should have been told better than this. It wasn't so bad towhere it stunk, it's just that it could have been better. You wouldthink because George Lucus made this film it would have been "Fly". Notreally. When I saw the trailer for this movie with George's name at thebottom of it, I was like, "I'm going to see this movie!!!" Then Istarted reading other reviews and I started getting second thoughts. Soone Friday, when I'm off and everyone's at school or at work, I decidedto see this film myself. Now it was O.K. for a movie to watch to passthe time. I'm still a George Lucus fan because of his Star Wars movies.Which were uniquely done and done perfectly. With that being said, Ithink if Steven Spilberg helped with Red Tails it would have been real"Fly". Steven Spilberg is an expert at WWII movies. So if you're notdoing anything one day and you want to see a movie, this one wouldn'thurt. Just see the matinée. I mean, it was alright.

Boring!

I expected better. The CG was impressive, but the aerial fights werevery boring, no intensity to them at all. The acting was mediocre and Idon't think the actors were talking like they were suppose to. By thisI mean they didn't speak like they were from the '30s. They soundedlike the stereotypical African-Americans, which was unfortunate. The dialogue in this movie was very cheesy, and the way the charactersacted during aerial fights was very unrealistic. They didn't seemconcern at all that they could die. Sadly, I wished death upon thecharacters so the movie would end, the worst part is how many times thefilm tries to be funny with comic relief and the filmmakers could haveat least make the aerial fights intense and gripping, but no, they madethe fights boring with lots of explosions (Michael Bay status). This has to be the most disappointing war movie I've ever seen. Don'tmake the same mistake I did, 2 hours of my life wasted because of thismovie, don't... make... the... same... mistake...

America Needs a Red Tail…..

America Needs a Red Tail…..America and Americans, continue to amaze me. They (We) wave the flag, shout out our allegiance to the principles of the founding fathers, andthen fight tooth and nail to prevent, delay, deride and intentionallydestroy any minute progress towards the final glory of the "intents" ofthese progressively thinking and learned gentlemen: To build thefoundation for the creation of a nation that is without hate, withoutmalice and devoid of prejudice for any race, creed, gender, religion orincome level.…..and so it is when I read the many wild, crazy and disturbingcomments of the critics, the pundits and the general public who arecollectively attempting to downplay the reality of purpose, andexistence of the movie "Red Tails".Red Tails is a good movie. Not a Great movie, but a good movie. It is amovie that is good for America, as most Americans have only heard partsof the story. Most Americans have not seen the story with their owneyes, or lived the story and experienced the failed dreams andaspirations, disappointing levels of appreciation and outright hatredof presence that these great men of valor felt and experienced whilefighting and dying for the nation that you now love.I applaud George Lucas for having the 'nads" to push the projectthrough. Let's be realistic America. America is still not free. Deep inour hearts, beyond the "Politically Correct" many of us, and I believemost of us, still harbor, believe in, and want too see the oldHollywood "This is how you sell a movie with a Black actor" value sets:1. All Black cast movies are great as long as the main male characteris buffoon in drag (Tyler Perry). 2. High profile Black male actors aregreat as long as they are subservient to the main White lead character(Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman, Crimson Tide) and don't touch theWhite woman (Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts, The Pelican Brief)and 3. If a Black actor makes love to a White woman on the screen hemust die. (This movie, Red Tails – I guess George had to concede tothis one to get anything at all from the Hollywood White Boys). As for the comments concerning the historical correctness of the storyand the lack of depth of the overall presentation I say this: Americadoes not want to hear it, and we are damn sure not willing to pay forit. For example, we don't want to hear that we lost 10 good Americans foreach bomber shot down because the White fighter pilots were too busygrabbing glory and becoming "Aces" (five kills) to give a damn abouttheir bomber brothers. American has 1,297 Aces listed for World War II.The Tuskegee Airmen had one, Lee Archer, and America hid this fact bynot confirming the last ½ of his last kill until he was almost 90 yearsold – 60+ years after the fact.We don't want to pay for a big screen presentation to tell us that in1945, 60 Tuskegee Airmen went to jail, and one, Roger "Bill" Terry, received a court martial and a felony conviction for "jostling" anofficer while trying to enter the officer's club on his base. Onceagain, America did not get around to correcting this travesty, andpardoning Bill, until he was in has late 80's, in 1995.In my view, I am truly lucky to see this story presented on the bigscreen, in my lifetime, in any fashion, and I am almost 65. So, when Iread these derogatory comments from the critics of Red Tails I know inmy heart that many of these comments serve only to camouflage theessence of the real truth: America, we are still too damn racist.

Red Tails Movie Review

Red Tails Movie Review - Set against the backdrop of the skies above1944 Italy at the height of WWII, Red Tails opens up on four squadfighters in pursuit of a low-profile target. Nicknamed 'Easy' (NateParker), 'Lightning' (David Oyelowo), 'Joker' (Elijah Kelley) and'Junior' (Tristan Wilds), these four fly outdated P-40 fighter planesfor the first African American aerial combat unit known as the TuskegeeAirmen. However, these dedicated flyers are only assigned to eliminateground-based targets because it is widely assumed within the militarythat men of color lack the intelligence or skill to handle situationssuch as dog fighting. Based on actual events, this film tells the storyof these highly-accomplished heroes who had to fight fascism in theair... and prejudice on the ground. The sharp-tongued squad fighters take on every mission assigned tothem, no matter how seemingly unimportant. Eventually, they're assignedto defend a beach landing, throwing them into their first dog fight...the results of which catch the attention of the higher military ranks. When it becomes clear to military leaders at the Pentagon thatprotecting American bombers en route to German targets requires arather unorthodox approach, Colonel Bullard (Terrence Howard) demandsthat the Tuskegee Airmen, under the watchful eye of Major Stance (CubaGooding Jr) are given the chance to prove themselves... with the helpof some new P-51 fighter planes, of course. To make the squad moredistinctive and recognizable, the tails of these planes are painted red- hence the nickname 'Red Tails'.In the midst of the war around them, these men deal with their ownchallenges. Drowning his pain with liquor, 'Easy' bares the mentalwounds of the expectations placed onto him by his father; always thetough guy who's ready to strike at anything in his way, 'Lightning'must explore a more patient side when pursuing a relationship withSofia (Daniela Ruah); 'Junior' simply wants to be considered somethingmore than just a kid; and Colonel Bullard must continually stand upagainst those who don't respect him for the opportunity his mendeserve. These ventures on the ground see the men through variousstruggles which are always overcome through a true sense of camaraderieand bravery. ***Understanding that Red Tails based on actual events, it's to beexpected that some dramatization will exist for the sake of artisticexpression - though the general look and feel of the of the film wasauthentic. With most battles taking place in the air, there isn't muchexposure to the horrors that one experiences on the ground during awar... which leads to an apparent lack of that 'gritty' feel in mostaction movies. As there's a wide range of talent in the cast, the film is carriedlargely on the backs of the more seasoned actors; but well enough thateverything flows nicely. With most dialogue being short and to thepoint, there are no lengthy conversations or speeches drawn out by theoccasional 'pause for reflection' - this allows for the story to playout at a consistent pace. However, with a runtime of about two hours, the film may have benefited from another twenty minutes of dialogue andinteraction with the sub-plots occurring on the ground, allowing for adeeper exploration into character development, backstory, range ofemotion and explanation of plot details. There were simply too manystories to be told and locations to be shown within two hours, leavingthe viewer desiring just a little more. The photography, costuming and art direction of Red Tails is quitebeautiful, and perhaps somewhat stylized and exaggerated. Every shotwas composed and choreographed so delicately that it progressesvisually like something from a comic book. This look is in starkcontrast to the color-bleached and hand-held photography of SavingPrivate Ryan; but more like the perfectly-lit and wide-anglephotography of Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor. George Lucas has always beena fan of dog fighting (present in a number of his StarWars films) buthe also leans toward ensuring that every shot of his more recent filmsare as clean as possible, leading to an often 'airbrushed' look -something made possible with computer technology in post-production. The aerial combat and dog fighting scenes are fast, action-packed andjust fun to watch. One can't help but hate the rather two-dimensionalGerman fighter pilot our heroes nickname 'Pretty Boy' as he appearstime and time again in these combat scenes. Thankfully, the use ofexplosions is kept to a minimal as planes are instead ripped to shredsby the hailstorm of bullets coming at them. Though the CG fighter planeeffects were very well done, some artistic license was taken in theirformations and tight flight patterns for the sake of cinematographicdrama. But hey, it's an action movie. This is one of those 'well-wrapped' films that utilizes something of aformulaic approach to telling the story because it's safe. It's a warfilm without much of the blood one might expect; a story about racialprejudice without much of the true ugliness that entails. Somewhatpredictable, there's a level of comfort with the lack of extremelyemotional 'cliffhanger' moments. As a whole, the film moves at a greatpace and has just right amount of well-times surprises andlight-hearted humor juxtaposed against military politics and violenceto make it a truly enjoyable experience. Red Tails is a great film foranyone - there's a little something for everyone here.

Hokey history lesson

It's unfortunate that a story with such potential is told in such apoor fashion. "Red Tails" attempts to familiarize us with the true-lifeexploits of black American fighter pilots during World War II whobattled racism to gain respect. But instead of rich storytelling, weget a somewhat sanitized version of history. The dialog is lame, thecharacter development shaky and acting unsatisfying. The in-air action-in its CGI glory - feels like part of a video game. It pales whencompared to the edge-of-your-seat excitement generated by great WWIImovies such as Saving Private Ryan and Das Boot. Apparently, producerGeorge Lucas waited years to make this film. Unfortunately, he shouldhave waited around for a better product.

Worst movie I've ever seen in the theater

Absolutely awful! The music didn't fit the scenes. The acting was AWFUL. Super stiff and weird and annoying. The character with the constant chew made me want to scream and throwmy drink at the screen.I should have gone to see Sherlock Holmes again. I really should have.I only survived this movie because my mom and I made fun of it theentire time!Somehow, even the action was boring. I don't think I had even oneadrenaline spike. After movies like Inception and LOTR and even Flyboys, this was adisgrace to the world off movies. I have no idea why they even bothered with it. And of course, they end up killing the only character you actuallylike.

George Lucas! STOP DIRECTING! NOW!

George Lucas's direction of this movie should be considered a hatecrime - a crime against humanity even. This is a story that should flow effortlessly onto the screen. It's aWorld War II fighter pilot movie - just how hard is that to make? Thescript is fine - it's not uninspired, but for one of the firstmainstream black-cast movies in Hollywood? It's fine. The actors runthe gamut from pretty good to awesome. The special effects are a littleover the top sometimes, but it's a shoot-em-up, right? So what could gowrong?George "Butterball" Lucas, that's what. Every scene that should beresonant with emotion or triumph is flat and uninspired. Lines aredelivered in ways that vary from uninspiring to insipid. GEORGE! THEYARE THE FIRST BLACK AIRMEN TO BLOW UP Germans! EMOTE, FOR GOD'S SAKE!The black guys get invited to a bar by the white guys - they hesitatethen go in and get drunk. REALLY? That's all you could come up withGeorge? I swear to god, if the bomber pilots delivered another boring, deadpan line about "gosh, are those really black guys" sounding like abad actor in a senior play, I was going to climb through the screen togo looking for Lucas with a 2x4.Seriously, George - don't ever, EVER ruin any movie by associatingyourself with it again.

What a shame

Im sorry but, this movie sucked. I think I saw Method Man.. The storyof these pilots could have been portrayed extremely better. Forstarters the black actors, such as Terrence Howard and Cuba GoodIngJr., we're good choices for the movie. It's a shame the movie waspoorly done and I know of no one who has said they enjoyed it. I gaveit a chance and watched the whole movie. Afterwards I kicked myself foreven watching it. If you see this movie you will regret it. That's apromis.. Unless your 12 years old and don't know anything then you'lllove it just like a Three Ninjas movie. - If you like Bucky Larson thenyou'll love this movie. I could not give this movie a zero because it'snot listed as an option for vote.

Pretty good, but it's not Top Gun

Overall a pretty good movie. Great special effects during the dogfightscenes. It was very hard to tell which parts were special effects andothers the actual planes. The only problem with the dogfight scenes wasthe shaky camera-work. Too much shaking with the camera can distractthe audience from the great special effects. The acting was good aside from the forced dialogue that the bomberpilots had to say. Terrence Howard puts on the best performance of themovie as Colonel A.J. Bullard with his motivational speeches togenerals and fighter pilots throughout the movie. The story anddialogue could have been cut down by 30 minutes and it would have stillfelt like a long movie. I guess that's what you get when you try tomake 4 to 5 fighter pilots all the main characters in the plot. Most people will have a good time with this movie. The plot is verysimple and straight forward and it has the best special effects thatyou can find in movies. The main problem is that the movie is way toolong and some parts of the movie seemed to be way to cliché. It's notTop Gun, but it is at least enjoyable.

Oh dear...

This is a perfect example of what's wrong with Hollywood movies..indeedit might be ( in the right context ie cost v outcome) the worst movieI've ever had the "pleasure" to endure in over 40 years of movie going.Wooden acting, appalling clichéd script, overt and embarrassingpatriotism, dire CGI and effects,an over reliance on CGI and a clumsysoundtrack.Oh yes, let's not forget that other love of mainstreamHollywood movies, shameless re-writing of history. There's terrific subject matter here ( and as already mentioned, donefar better in a much cheaper and earlier TV movie) and a trulysignificant film to be made.. but this isn't it.It's awful clichéddrivel.Frankly,it's a film of which everyone involved should be ashamed.Sadlyyou'll hear all involved gushing and prattling on in the publicityinterviews about how meaningful the film is and what an honor it was towork with Mr Lucas etc, etc.
