As a joke, I wanted to start this review by saying it is about thehorrors of turning real live chimps into CGI, but as I was watching thefilm I started to get into the mood and understand what it was about.Fortunately, it was a rather good story with very good rendering, butunfortunately it doesn't even begin to approach the level of socialcommentary that the original movies had. As such, I would say it's abetter than average sci-fi movie, but a less than average Planet of theApes. To put it bluntly, the apes get smart, they start to resent theirtreatment at the hands of humans and they react. How? Violently! Hulksmash style. Yes, we can now create the level of CGI that shows hordesof apes moving across the Golden Gate bridge, but then we succumb tothe ease of transforming it all into a mindless battle for dominance. If there is something to be taken from this film, it is the wayemotions were conveyed from a purely apish perspective. Even ifsometimes the apes were made to look and act way too human, most of thetime one could expect stuff like that from real animals. I think thisis relevant, I think this shows the level of emotional manipulation inHollywood movies today goes far lower than "the common denominator",down to the ape in us. And we enjoy it.Bottom line: a block buster that tries to cash in on an idea that mostpeople in the audience aren't even familiar with and a far cry fromCarlton Heston's films, but better than most of the crap this year hasto offer. Expect nothing spectacular and you will probably enjoy it.

From the makers of Beyind the Planet of the Apes and Journey to thePlanet of the Apes, comes a new movie called 'Rise of the Planet of theApes', which you can get skeptic about a lot of things, but you cannotdeny that its entertaining. I got to see this in a screening few daysback. The movie is full of explosions, nice special effects, enormousscale of the world, well mixed soundtracks, and fantastic presentation.Every character is likable and sympathetic. The animation quality isunquestionable and it has some nice jokes. It is fast paced, although Ipersonally would have preferred if they made the movie a bit longer; There is a lot of margin for drama and emotional content with the storythey have and also since DWA is really putting good depth in theirmovies lately, I was expecting the same, but they preferred to keep itshort. As I have always seen, one thing chimp movies have in common... theyare entertaining.

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" showcases the astonishing capabilityof modern-day technology by replicating the apes in unbelievablyrealistic minutiae. Witnessing the creation of such a seamlessconnection between the real and virtual worlds is truly a pleasantlystunning experience. Even if it lacked a captivating storyline- whichis not the case at all- "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" could stillenthrall and mesmerize with its jaw-dropping accomplishment of givingbirth to a visually hypnotizing shrewdness of diversely constructedapes. Furthermore, these outstanding CGI effects are complemented by anaction-packed sequence of events bearing strong moral undertones aimedat supporting animal protection and condemning human rapaciousness asthe primordial cause. The human against ape confrontations are not onlyexplosive yet blood-sparring fun, but are also lessons teaching tocoexist peacefully. The society of apes under ruthless siegereciprocate the attack not with equally merciless killings, but mostlywith life-sparing counterattacks- an unexpected display of superiorityfrom animals that were considered to be a few steps below theevolutionary ladder. All in all, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes"exhibits the two polar extremes of humans: the capacity to buildextraordinary sights of sheer beauty and the capacity to greedily tearthem apart.

This review is from: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Two-Disc Edition Blu Ray + DVD/Digital Copy Combo) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) First of all, the film itself. I didn't catch this in theaters but I was aware of all the positive buzz, and I'm a big fan of the original Planet of the Apes movie (don't really care much about the sequels), and I already thought this movie looked interesting. I've watched it twice, and I must say that I really LOVED it the 2nd time. This movie is a terrific reboot/origin story for this series, and while it pays homage to the original, it still manages to be its own film. I loved how focused the movie is; the story is simple but very well thought out and executed. The film doesn't get bogged down in unecessary subplots. And the character of Caesar (especially thanks to Andy Serkis) is one of my favorite charatcers in any film. The CGI is excellent; of course you can tell the apes aren't real, but the CGI is still so lifelike. Also, the fact that they used motion captures made the apes feel like real creatures. Some people might say that this is a cash-in on the older series, but it isn't. It's a new take on the story and a great one at that. It's definitely one of the best films of 2011.As for the Blu-Ray itself, it's very crisp and clean and the colors pop out at you. The sound is great. The biggest selling point is the extra, since there are some great ones here. There are many featurettes showing the making of the film, from the motion capture performances to the score of the film, etc. One of my favorite features is a mini-documentary about the great apes, covering chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. These animals are beautiful and fascinating, and the viewer really gets to learn some amazing facts about them if they didn't know them already. All in all, this is a great Blu-Ray release of a great movie. It was a blind buy for me and I wasn't disappointed. The Transformers films could learn a few things from this one.

Just finished screening Rise of the Planet of the Apes and wassurprisingly pleased with the offering. Before we pushed "play" I wasexpecting a re-run of previous "Planet of the Apes" movies, but afterthe first scene I could see this was something familiar but verydifferent. Not only did the film capture my undivided attention withits action scenes, the emotion within the plot line was believable andwell played out. Watching the apes' "rise", I was on the edge of myseat waiting for each subsequent scene to see what would happennext...never looked at the clock once! All in all a good watch and agood effort by everyone involved! The ending was quite satisfying, andhaving drawn me in to the apes' world, it left me hoping there would bea sequel.

My wife and I saw this movie in the theatres not expecting it to be one of the best movies we had ever seen in our lives. Before half way through the movie my wife and I were looking at each other and saying this is incredible! And she is not even a fan of most Sci-Fi movies. The trailor did absolutely no justice at all to this movie. I like the original series of Planet of the Apes though they are not my favorite movies. I did not like the Tim Burton remake that took the scary away and made it more creepy and weird and took the spirit away from the classics. This movie made everything far better and made it like a whole new original franchise you cant compare to anything. This is the greatest science fiction movie since the classic original trilogy of Star Wars.(Not the lame prequels with anoying Jar-Jar and Annie but the great classics)It makes Jurrasic Park look like Sesame Street which was pretty intense and had amazing effects when I saw it in the theaters back in the early 90's. This movie is extremely scary and intense like you cant even begin to imagine. I cannot name another movie that I have seen in my lifetime where the plot kept getting better and better non-stop throughout the entire film. This is one of the most amazing and entertaining movies I have ever seen. Not just the best movie of the year but the best movie I have seen in many years. It has all the aspecs of convincing you that something fictional is possible much like how Michael Crichton has done in his novels. It's not nice to fool with mother nature. And it becomes a disaster if not the worst disaster the world has ever seen. A threat to humanity.I dont want to give anything away but this movies will probably make you afraid of apes even more than Jaws made you afraid of sharks. You need to see it for yourself to believe it. I wish this movie could set the standard for other movies. The problem is most movies are not this good. Who is going to beat this? It's going to be a while before that can of will happen. Computer graphics kill movies shortly after they are made because technology advances so rapidly and after a while they just look like a video game. The great thing about this movie is you can hardly tell at all that these apes are computer generated. They look like the real thing which will help even more to make this movie a timeless classic.

I wasn't an ape fan until I seen this, this movie has a great scriptthats very believable, the acting is spot on and the CGI and SpecialEffects are brill, This is one of those movies where you leave thecinema feeling upbeat cos you know you have just seen an excellentfilm, the movie is only an hour and a half as well and does not feelrushed at all, the pace of the movie is good - your not left thinkingits rushed nor thinking its dragged out, I would put this movie on parwith 'The Dark Knight' - one of those movies where they got 'everythingright' - I hope this is the first in many ape movies too come.- go see it you wont be disappointed!

The movie was good, good to someone that is an apes fan - This filmoutpaced Tim Burtons "Planet of the Apes" (remake -http://www.flixster.com/movie/planet-of-the-apes#!lsrc:GSR-MOV-Title)by a long shot! This remake brought the story into the modern age andopened to door for several more to be made... of course, since it is aprequel to another "Planet of the Apes" remake. However, the continuedmaking of these "remakes" says a lot about the creative talent of"Hollywood"... like there is none. If you aren't paying attention youmight miss both the launch of the "mission to mars" and the newspaperheadlines "mars mission missing"...

So I came into the cinema expecting an average movie about some apestaking over the world.. boy was I wrong. Instead I got the best summermovie of 2011 hands down!I'm going to list all the good and bad; Good. It had everything in it: ÂStrong but slow developing plot (youcan feel the tension building up as the story progresses) ÂGreat acting(Andy Serkis) ÂStrong script ÂEmotion (you could really feel Ceaser'swas feeling) ÂAction ÂAMAZING CGI/live motion capture (not surprisingif it's the same people behind Avatar) ÂAnd most of all, Andy Serkiswas truly amazing as Ceaser and I hope he wins an Oscar.Bad ÂThe truly pointless girlfriend (Freida Pinto), she had No purposein this movie except to be the hottie in the background, and there 0%connection between her and Will. ÂSPOILER* The scene where StevenJacobs walks into he room and he was surrounded by apes, HOW THE LEMONSDID HE ESCAPE?! ÂJames Franco wasn't right for this role, Don't get mewrong tho he's an awesome actor (especially in 127 hours) but this rolejust wasn't James Franco.I strongly STRONGLY recommend ANYBODY to go see this NOW! even if yourold, young or whatever you will enjoy this.

I went to see this film yesterday and wanted to watch it againimmediately! My partner and I left the cinema and went straight to buythe previous films. It is an amazing storyline, amazing acting and theCGI is mind-blowing. You tend to forget that you are not watching realapes.So... The storyline goes that a med company is trying to develop a newdrug to cure Alzheimer's and are testing on apes. One ape they test isshowing an extraordinary amount of intelligence and they name it brighteyes. While Will (one of the main characters and the man leading theresearch) is trying to sell the new drug to gain permission for humantesting, bright eyes goes crazy and it is ordered that all the apes areput down. However... It turns out to not be the drug causing the changeIn bright eyes but the fact she had given birth and was trying toprotect her baby. And here enters Caesar! Caesar is one of the most lovable, interesting and exciting charactersI have ever seen in a movie. Caesar gained added intelligence from thedrugs his mother was given when she was carrying him. The film showsits growth from a baby to an adult (brought up like a child by will)and his intelligence progressing to that of a human. You will fall inlove with him and I found myself crying in the cinema at some points. I don't want to spoil it so I wont write too much but it shows asCaesar develops so does his questioning of his upbringing and hebecomes angry and resentful. Thus bringing him to form an "ape army"and the rest is history. This is a happy film, a sad film, a scary film, an action film and athought provoking film. This is a definite must see . You will laugh, cry and it will make you think about the possibilities of humansdestroying ourselves with too much power. Please see this film.

One very good movie! The movie is well cast, acted, and directed, butwhat really makes this movie good is the story. The story is wellresearched with how primates act. They defend their tribe, their young, and work in social groups. The movie shows how people behave likeanimals by fear, and intimidation. The movie adds aspects like genetherapy, and the use of viruses in medicines. The movie also shows whenproper medical procedures are not used the world could face a pandemic.I love the movie's details where people in the airline industry makeperfect incubators. The movie sets up part two perfectly. The apes riseand a pandemic faces humanity makes a great story. The details that thedirector and actors performance in the film was amazing. The characterwho has Alzheimer's disease plays the role painfully perfect. I foundit hard to watch. The idea of the nasty airline pilot because ofstress, being away from home, disrupted sleep patterns were greatlayering for a strong story. I will not ruin the story for you, but onemight have to watch Rise of the Planet of the Apes a few times toappreciate this film. I give Rise of the Planet of the Apes eight outten.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a throwback to the golden age of sci-fi when big ideas where at the center of the storyteller. Andy Serkis as Caesar is a tour de force performance and hopefully he lands an Oscar nod for his work here. He is nothing short of brilliant. He looks real. He feels real. There are moments when it feels like you are watching a human brain trapped in the body of an ape. He is that good. The effects by WETA are truly amazing. The action and spectacle are also well done. Emotional, heartbreaking, and always riveting, this is a fantastic character-study film some thought-provoking concepts and ideas.

I wish I had the BD already. I would prefer to write a review on the whole thing, but this will have to suffice for now. I read one review some time ago saying that if you can allow yourself to fall into the story and ignore a few things, then you'll likely enjoy the film very much. I see other 'reviewers' derailing the film for having no realism (this IS a sci-fi film, by the way, an attempted hard sci-fi at that). No one is paying attention. The true star of this film is the editing. We are not left to suffer the ten / fifteen minutes it takes a character to start a process; we know the character is about to try something, scene skips to the attempt. At one hour forty-four minutes, we get the information dump of a three hour film.Bare Bones: the film has virtually no violence outside the neighbourhood chase scene. The count of human death is barely noticeable and in fact five, for an entire supposedly intro to human-v-ape war. But this isn't the war. The reason a few hundred or so apes beat back humanity is two fold: the apes were only trying to find an effective new home, not destroy the oppressive humans; they didn't have to. Within a very small number of years the 113 strain of the virus has obliterated the human population. The movie is understated. It moves so quick that a jaded mind, thinking they know what's gonna happen, will miss at least a quarter of the understated plot. To catch everything, one is advised to watch the film on BR with the fullest sound system programme available, and appropriate subtitles engaged. And watch with an open mind, and enjoy it.

I must admit I was somewhat skeptical upon hearing of plans to reboot the APES franchise, but this prequel is quite entertaining. The movie focuses on a brilliant young scientist who is developing a drug that may cure Altzheimer's. While experimenting on apes, a dangerous side affect of increased aggression results in the cessation of the project. The determined scientist sneaks one of the baby apes out of the lab and continues the experiment on his own. This ape is "Caesar" who is destined to be the leader of the future rebellion and ultimate "rise."James Franco, Frieda Pinto, John Lithgow and Tom Felton are fine as the humans but it is Andy Serkis' "motion captured" performance that is the true heart of the film. All of Caesar's desires, emotions, reactions are beautifully evidenced and provide the movie's dramatic pulse. The FX are quite good with a dynamic climactic confrontation on the Golden Gate Bridge.RISE is the best APES film since the classic original; I think Charlton Heston would be proud.

Starlitelet (06 May 2012)
I heard good reviews about this movie so I decided to check it out formyself knowing that this is most likely the last wistful movie ofsummer 2011 for me.Acting: The animated apes were far more superior in the actingdepartment compared to the human actors. However, that does not meanthat James Franco and the rest of the casts were abysmal. They werepretty good, since I expected less from Franco as a scientist. Healways seemed like a druggie or sleepy lately (no offense to his fans).Though, he was passable or believable as a scientist. On the otherhand, Freida Pinto did not do anything really. They could have chosenany female actress to do her part. She was unnecessary. I thought JohnLithgow was good in his role. He played it naturally... ha-ha not thatI'm saying he's like that in real life. Tom Felton was also annoyinglike usual. He always plays this dumb bully that everybody would liketo punch at the end. Hence, it's not such a huge diversion from what henormally does, but once again, it works here. However, the focus of the movie was not directed towards Franco, Pinto,Lithgow or Felton. It was towards the apes. The Weta Production. Caesarwas an extremely powerful character. He makes you root for him. Hemakes you feel for him. He makes you want to become a chimpanzee. Andif a chimpanzee can make you feel that much, then boy, he can scootover half of the actors today. He did not need to talk or sayanything... just his emotions alone amplifies his needs. His movementswere like those of real apes. He's actually the only ape that has thatmuch emotion in his eyes, like those of humans. He's one of the bestcharacters created this year and rarely do I feel this much for ananimated character.9/10 (lets say Caesar is also a human) Plot: There was nothing newly significant in the plot, but it's still ahighly driven story. It builds up to the climax and at some point nearthe end of the film where all the apes surpasses the humans' wits atthe bridge, epicness just oozes out. I actually felt for the apes. Iwanted to protect them just as much as Will did. Also, it's a lot more believable than the previous Planet of the Apesmovies. And no, that does not mean that I believe apes will take overthe world someday. I just thought they way they made the intellectualapes think was believable. On the other hand, I did not buy Franco and Pinto's relationship. Itfelt forced and unnecessary. I know that she was a partial reason forWill and Caesar to grow apart, but it just felt too convenient. Theymet at the zoo. I mean c'mon! 8/10 Special Effects: The special effects is no where as near as Avatar. Most of the monkeys looked fake. By this I mean that you were able todifferentiate what was real and not. However, their natural movementsand emotion on their faces made up for it. I thought the action sceneat the end was quite awesome. There was not a lot of action, but itfelt real in that moment... even the apes/monkeys.8/10 Entertainment: I had loads of fun with this movie. I actually didn'twant it to end. I was happy that Caesar did not die. That would havebeen cheesy. I thought it was easier to buy on the idea of how thiswhole idea of apes ruling the world might into play. The previousmovies did not show this and I'm glad this one did. I am also glad thatthey left the ending open for a sequel. The whole movie felt refreshingeven though the idea has already been around and recycled. The 105minutes went by too quickly. I'll be waiting for the sequel! 9/10

this movie is a solid flick loved the story the action was OK and ilove how it tied into the other ape films (you have to pay attention).this is my only second time reviewing a movie the other wastransformers 2. both of these movies let me down so big that i had towrite something.can Hollywood please just make a rated R movie without fear that kidswont go and see it? i mean honestly kids play more violent video gamesfor 5 hours a day then they would get to see in a movie! what is theharm? this movie could have been so much better!!!! just give it alittle darker edge to it some violence or heres a crazy thought apesthat wanted to kill men? no more pg13 for me

Considering the last attempt to bring Planet of the Apes to the screenwas a complete disaster, it's hard to believe this film even got the goahead to be made. However, Rise of the Planet of the Apes is nothingless than a pleasant and extremely exciting surprise. The film starts out as a drama: James Franco plays a doctor who isworking on a cure for Alzheimer's. When there is a fatal accident inthe lab, Franco sneaks a baby chimp home, where he discovers that theAlzheimer's drug given to chimps is genetic, and as a result, makeslittle baby Caesar extremely intelligent. But as the years go by,Caesar becomes more and more displaced, and eventually winds up at thepound. It is here, among average chimps, orangutans, and a gorilla, that Caesar becomes increasingly depressed, and then the real actionstarts.Franco is fantastic as the ambitious young doctor, and John Lithgow isgreat as Franco's Alzheimer's stricken father. It is strange to see TomFelton portraying anyone else besides Malfoy in Harry Potter, yet hetoo is perfect as the obnoxious employee at the pound. But it's AndySerkis (covered up in motion-capture CGI) as Caesar that steals theshow. Serkis blends ape mannerisms seamlessly with human attributes, and supplies the most touching moments in the film.Newcomer Rupert Wyatt directs this film with precision. Not a moment isdull or unwanted. Wyatt constantly pays tribute to the original seriesby reusing classic lines and plot elements that make the movie sopleasing. The Rise of the Planet of the Apes is one of the most thrilling moviesof the year, and is part of a recent trend of very well done sci-fifilms. A suspenseful and exhilarating ride, one can only hope thesequel will be as good.http://thatguythatlikesmovies.blogspot.com/

I don't understand what all the fuss is about, I mean it must be theproduct of diminished expectation ... because I felt like I moronwatching this. There's this one character - who is, technically, the catalyst for allthe "rising" that transpires - to whom your immediate reaction is,"What in God's name is your problem?!", shortly followed by, "WHY AREYOU EVEN WORKING THEIR?!". There are also lots of scenes of stuff goingwrong in a lab but it's not in that edge of your seat "these are verydangerous experiments you guys are conducting. I guess knowing whatyou'd gotten yourselves into kinda makes your PWNAGE fair" fashion,it's more "these are very dangerous experiments, YOU IDIOTS. Did younot know what you were getting yourselves into?".There are a handful of Hollywood moments here and there, to make it alleasier to swallow but it being easy enough to swallow as it is, theyjust made it all the more boring. It's not terrible, I do like the fact that Caesar's growing smarteronly brought him further in touch with his "ape side", it was arefreshingly un-condescending thing to see but, really ... who cares? It's still quite an unremarkable film and I'm left wondering where allthe proper blockbusters have gone.Go and see 'Super 8'

This film really makes you think, not in the whole animal hugging typeway, but in a way of following the main characters. Ceaser, the ape whostarts the whole riot, shows that actions speak louder than words. Forthe audience have to watch Ceaser and try and "read his mind", so tospeak. The whole development of the rise is very well done, not to fastand not to slow in pace. The human characters are also a joy to watch,James Franco and Freida Pinto are really good in this film. TomeFelton? meh (good thing he's not the main character) the rest workedreally well in the film. Don't expect the whole world to be overtakenby apes in this one film but expect to see the beginning of the growthof the apes domination over the whole world. It's only the beginning,i'd be surprised to see if there were to be no Ape sequels.
