Not as mind-blowing as expected, but a great twist on the Horror genre!

Looks like Buffy creator Joss Whedon has found a big screen playgroundall for himself!*I am making this as spoiler free as possible!*I was intrigued to see Cabin in the Woods, but not obsessed; unlikesome people I didn't realise this has been in the works for some timenow, and I merely knew "it does things differently". That's enough forme. I see a lot of films, an awful lot, and some times they start tolook and sound the same. Cabin in the Woods is a Scream-esque homage tothe horror genre, but less of a parody and more of an actual twist onthe genre. Five young friends go off on a road trip to spend a weekendin a woodland cabin, but when they arrive they awaken evil and uncoverthe multiple layers of secrets behind it.It is very hard to talk about this one without giving away the linchpinof its originality. So I recommend seeing this, it is a gore fest fullof Joss Whedon humour (seriously, fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer,Angel, Firefly, Serenity should probably check this out!) and has apunchy subtext about every generic horror movie ever made. If you are afan of your horror films, I'm sure you'll pick up on this. Some might see its deliberate clichés as exactly that, clichés, butthat is in fact the point of the thing. Is that in itself uninventive?Well, that's up to the viewer, but Whedon always likes to haveunderlying ideas in his works, and doesn't beat you over the head withthem. While I wasn't blown away by it as the hype was suggesting Ishould be, it was one of the more entertaining and original takes onthe teen horror movie genre. In a nutshell, watch and read as little as possible. This review cannotexpress what goes on, but I can say that even watching the trailer gaveaway too much! Perhaps when the popularity dies down, and it becomesone of many random horror rentals, it'll shine all the brighter. Not as chilling or jump-scary as Woman in Black, but fun, gory andwitty with its originality.

A Mind Bending Brilliant Gory Horror Flick

The Cabin In The Woods is one of the best horror films i have seen in along time. It starts very strange until the typical horror startsteenagers going to the woods on there own you just know whats comingbut not here in this movie. There are soo many twists and turns i'msure you will not see any of them coming. Joss Whedon has created aunique new horror movie that will spawn squeal after squeal all theactors are really good at there roles which is another bonus for thisfilm. There are many jumps to be had as well its a great movie to beseen in cinemas and im sure it will be a perfect Friday the 13th moviefor anyone in the UK. The Cabin In The Woods is ever changing the finalscenes are unimaginable, scary and extra ordinary. There's little wrongwith this horror comedy sci-fi mash up. The Cabin In The Woods is aride and a great one so strap yourselves in prepare to be blown away. Idon't see why this movie was not released sooner and why it was sat onthe shelf for soo long it truly is a remembered experience that youwont forget for a long time and has potentional to become a classic inthis horror genre and it is going to change the Horror genre so getready for more take off sequels and prequels. The Cabin In The Woodsperfect for horror fans (even fans of The Evil Dead Series) see it nowand do not wait i say.

Great Movie!

I am a horror movie aficionado, I watch the good, the bad, and theugly. I just watched this movie without any preconceived notions. ILOVED it! If you are someone who is a true horror movie fan you shouldwatch it. I cannot speak for everyone but I thought this movie wasstraight-on great! I have put it into my Top 10 horror movies list.Itincorporates so many other movies into it (intentionally-I imagine),any horror movie buff can pick them out quickly. But the ending is sobeyond out there! It was amazingly creative, I never saw it coming. Andthe surprise actor toward the end....priceless and perfect! I cannotconceive of why anyone would not like this movie but I truly thinkanyone who likes horror should take a look and judge for themselves.

Horror movie?

The Cabin in the Woods... a clever film mixing the traditional horrorfilm with the old books and weird families with weird stories and themodern lab with scientists choosing the outcome of people's death. Apredictable cast, the 'Whore', the sporty guy, the clever guy, thedruggy and the girl who understand what's going on and will probablysurvive. But what makes this horror movie different is the lab rats, deciding what will happen on this weird kind of reality show. With afew glitches, this film is perfect for people who are amazed easily. However, there are a few parts in the film which will put you on edgeand will shock you, that's what these kind of films are all aboutright? The Cabin in the Woods, if you are bored and want something tostick on, i advise this. But those who seek a thrilling, horrific, blood fest which will make you tremble, i suggest you to keep onsearching.

A horror fan's wet dream!

'THE CABIN IN THE WOODS': Five Stars (Out of Five) The best reviewed movie of the year, so far, is this B slasher filmfrom 'Nerd God' Joss Whedon! Whedon co-wrote and produced the film andhis buddy, a usual partner in crime of his, Drew Goddard directed thefilm. The cast features new Whedon 'Go-To Man' Chris Hemsworth (whoalso plays 'Thor' in Whedon's upcoming 'AVENGERS' film). The film is ameta slasher flick spoof and the best of it's type since 'SCREAM' orpossibly even 'EVIL DEAD II'! The story revolves around five friends going on vacation at a remotecabin in the middle of the woods owned by Curt's (Hemsworth) cousin.Despite being warned of danger by a creepy gas station attendant (TimDe Zarn) they continue to the cabin and also investigate it'smysterious basement, which is full of strange artifacts. Meanwhilethey're being watched by technicians at a government facility and welearn they're guinea pigs in some kind of experiment. The filmconstantly winks it's eye at the viewer as it runs through every horrorcliché imaginable. The movie is brilliantly tongue in cheek and the perfect homage to Bhorror films. The script is clever and the directing is perfectlyfitting. The cast is all perfect in their roles (especially memorableturns from Fran Kranz, Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford). It'shilarious as well as perfectly gruesome (a horror fan's wet dream) andthe climax is more than any monster movie fan could ask for. wasted 95 minutes of my life and wasted 23 dollars of my money.

I honestly have to say that I have no idea where the good reviews arecoming from, some even said that it was this generations Evil Dead, Ibeg to differ. The entire movie is completely bad from beginning to the end. It is nota movie I would call a horror movie, it was honestly more like acomedy, don't get me wrong I love alittle bit of humour in horrormovies but this movie had way to much of it.The plot was also bad it is nothing like the trailer, the people thatare suppose to die in the movie are being sacrificed for gods by peopleunderground(like really come on), and they are being killed by monstersthat we know absolutely nothing about and we later find out that thereis a giant facility full of werewolves, zombies, giant snakes etc.Just when you think it can't get any worse 2 of the people that aresuppose to die make it to the underground facility and let out all ofthe ridiculous monsters and ghosts and start killing everyone, and whenyou see all these monsters the effects are extremely bad. Then theworld comes to an end because the two remaining characters didn't getsacrificed(really are you kidding me). This movie is just all around bad. Don't waste your time, and don'twaste your money.

H P Lovecraft Meets Mission Control

I found this film to be the most original horror flick I have seen inover a decade. The writing, effects, and plot all make it worthwatching, but just barely. The basic flaws are in the performances.None of the actors in this movie looked as if they gave a damm. Howeverit is a very original premise that both pays homage to, and makes funof the genre at the same time. The scene where the spooky old guy fromthe gas station asks if he's on speakerphone is really funny. If theyhad just gotten some better acting I would have given it more stars. But if you are a fan of the genre, you may find it well worth yourtime.

No it isn't original or scary but it's not bad

First of all, regardless of the rumors there is nothing original aboutthis movie at all. It is a mash-up of clichés. It is not funny and doesnot try to be funny. It is not anything at all like Evil Dead or itssequels. It is certainly not scary either. That said, it's stillentertaining right up to the really lousy ending. It starts off with some rather badly acted businessmen preparing for abig project at the work place. Then it cuts to the gathering of 5stereotypical teens ready to head out to summer house for a littlevacation. Others have already mentioned that the characters are veryflat and the movie tells that they were chosen for that very reason. Italso implies that there personalities have been altered with chemicalsto make them fit more into their roles. There is the slut, the jock, the scholar, the fool -in this case a stoner-, and of course thevirgin. The businessmen in their control room plan every stage of the trip, watching the teens leave, having one of their own planted at the onlygas station on the road, making sure the road cannot be tracked on GPS,and surrounding the area of the cabin with a forcefield so that thereis only one way in which can be blocked so the kids can't get back out. They have the entire place rigged with cameras and electronics so thatwhen the kids get to the cabin they can watch everything that happens. The businessmen have arranged all kinds of stereotypical westernmonsters from horror movies ranging from good ole zombies to specialredneck pain worshiping zombies. Some when you get the chance to seethem are truly creepy like their nod at the Cenobites from "Hellraiser"and an evil clown a la "It". Some are just sadly lame like a Merman anda giant hissing Cobra. The teens have to choose to go to the cabin then choose their method ofdeath. The means of choosing is a cellar full of props. There is adollhouse, diary, creepy old dolls, conch shell, and tons more stuff. The virgin makes the choice for the group unknowingly by reading from adiary. Yep, you guessed it... the redneck pain worshiping zombies itis. Apparently there are ancient evil gods sleeping underground. For themto remain asleep, a ritual sacrifice has to be made periodically. Thebusinessmen orchestrating the scenario with the kids in the woods arethe ones entrusted to carry off this sacrifice. If they fail, the godswill awaken and destroy all humanity. Fortunately, there are ritualsbeing carried out in other countries besides the US. Unfortunately allthose have failed this time and it comes down to our kids in the woods. They must die and in the proper order or all humanity is toast.Things seem to be going mostly according to plan. The zombie familyfinishes off the slut. The stoner gets pulled through a window by azombie. The jock crashes his bike into the forcefield trying to go gethelp. The scholar is drowned when he and the virgin crash the motorhome into the water. The businessmen go ahead and start to celebratebecause the virgin's death is always optional as long as it is last. The red phone rings. It would seem the celebration was premature. Thestoner is still alive. Apparently the weed he is smoking has made himsomewhat immune to the various chemicals they have been using to guidethe teens in the choices they want them to make. He comes to thevirgin's rescue and they run away into a mausoleum that leads to anelevator shaft. At this point the movie goes downhill hard and fast. The ending feelslike something just cobbled together to make a conclusion. The scenesare hectic and filled with torrents of gore. The story line is tossedaside for cheap action shots. The ending of this movie is probably themost unsatisfying ending in movie history. The virgin and the stoner realize the elevator accesses glass cubesholding monsters and ghosts and that someone let the zombies they havebeen running from loose on them. The virgin realized she chose whichmonsters were unleashed on them because she read the diary out loud. Now they have to battle security forces armed with automatic weaponswith orders to kill them. They hide behind a big console that controlsthe monster so she turns them loose. The monsters attack the guardsthen make their way through to whole complex slaughtering everyone. Eventually after many corridors and rooms of gore, the two survivorsreach the sacrifice room. The director of the complex who is played bySigourney Weaver, explains that Marty, the stoner must die to save allhumanity. She urges the virgin to kill him. After a struggle in whichthe director is killed, the two teens light up a joint and discuss howhumanity is not worth saving as the ancient gods burst up from theground under the cabin. This moving is entertaining enough to watch once. I would wait to rentit or stream it rather than pay high theatre prices though. If you wantsomething scary or funny, this is not the one for you. The first twothirds of the movie will appeal to those who like traditional teenslasher movies. Pretty much everyone will hate the ending.

What an ending...

This film is a bad motherf*****. Congratulations to the writers, forthe story and especially for the ending. A very nice literally punchfrom inside the film industry. That I didn't expect it. It was actuallya surprise. Not much leading from the film trailer keeping the storysafe from unfolding to the audience. So simple, cynic, and real.Starting from a "big brother" basis the writers built a story withfresh words and content. The actors do their job fairly but for me thehighlight of the film is the success of "telling" the audience from afresh perspective what they already know, but most of the times they'veseen it to what we call independent movies: 1)the suppressor has a timelimit, finally he'll be overthrown, 2)we are not meant (as humanspecies) to predominate forever.

Smart, Interesting, and Entertaining -- A Breakthrough in Horror Films

One of the most smartly entertaining, inquisitively unique, andsurprisingly humorous horror films ever made. As should be expectedfrom the writer of Cloverfield, The Cabin in the Woods takes you on apsychological thrill ride into a place of nightmares where Saw meetsThe Hunger Games and will surprise and intrigue you as you unravel thestory. The movie throws convention aside and takes the genre to a new, deeper level. Fit to entertain all, there is plenty of blood and gore,a host of horrifying creatures, and an interesting and deeply rootedconspiracy. Despite its occasional quirks and flaws, it will satisfyany viewer who enjoys horror and/or thinking movies. 7.8/10

The most original film or the genre in a very long time! 8 out of 10!

Like I always say 80 - 85% of horror movies are not very good, but ifyou get scared, freaked out at least a little then it's worth it.The commercial might seem a little typical. But this film is not.I'm sure if any shots in the film remind you of The Evil Dead, orlocation of it being a Cabin in the woods. Was a well played homage tothose films before it. And in no way a rip off.CABIN IN THE WOODS - 8 out of 10. The most original film of the genreI've seen. Why it was filmed in 2009 and only released now, appears tobe arguments between the studio and the creators of the film over 3D.Eventually released with the creators 2D intentions. Well worth themoney. It's true. It's not what you think. Very entertaining. The lessyou know, or tell anyone...the better! Good night at the movies! There will be gore. There will be laughs.

Not to be taken seriously! Enjoyable and different!

I have to say I wasn't expecting to enjoy this movie after hearing somebad reviews from friends. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it andwould definitely watch it again. If you're expecting to be scared, then you will be disappointed, asthis film doesn't really do that. (There are some parts but overall Idon't think it's meant to be a scary film.)I found this film to be more of a Thriller/Horror/Comedy. It had melaughing throughout, intentionally, and was full of twists and turnsthat had me guessing throughout. If you're reading this review and planning on seeing the film, then Iwouldn't read too much into it as I did this and it ruined it a littlebit for me as I knew the ending! Having said that, the movie was stillnot what I expected and the 'silly' ending, I found not to be so sillyas it does fit into the movie.*SPOILER* People may say there are clichés, but they are meant to bethere, the movie has purposely been made in this way, and the group ofpeople have been 'chosen' because of who they are and the type ofpeople they are. *END SPOILER*Overall, I would recommend the movie, don't expect it to be scary, because it's not, but expect the unexpected, laughs, and surprises.Enjoy the movie, and don't take it too seriously!

correlationfornow (02 May 2013)

Play Evil Dead after it (just trailer is enough) and you will understand how bad this is

Words that i associate with this movie are boredom, tedium, dullness, blank, stupid, dumb, forced humor, no charm at all, sleep...There was idea with those gods, it could be powerful but complete lackof atmosphere or humor made it tedious. ONE IDEA DOESN'T MAKE A MOVIE.2h of video and audio do and one idea is unable to make 2h worthy. But the fun thing here is how fans are speaking about some pointlessthings that sound smart but they don't have anything to do withreality. Its funny to me how people like to be smart but think thatthey can achieve that with emotions and some abstract thoughts and notwith practical proofs and logics. Where do they think they live. However i don't think that was directors point i think he just isn'tenough skillful to make good horror satire of humanity. We live in the very poor times in film world when Evil Dead of ourtimes is this extremely weak film.

My theater clapped and cheered!

Seriously, Horror Movies are dead. I haven't seen a good one in yearsnow. Normally there would be a good Horror Movie every couple ofmonths, then it was every couple of years, now I haven't seen one inyears and years! At least...UNTIL NOW!!!! Joss Wheddon is proving thatHorror Movies are dead, predictable and just down right silly andstupid. And he takes every Horror Character and just makes fun of itlike crazy! What starts out as a normal, predictable Horror Movie thenturns into "So that's why they are acting so stupid." It's got greatcomedy in it as well! Horror is dead and this movie proves that Horroris dead, by making fun of the Horror Genre. I loved Horror moviesgrowing up, but what this movie had to say was absolutely spot on:Horror Is dead. That's what makes this movie so great. it wasn't scary(on purpose) and it was funny (on purpose) making a point about HorrorMovies. And ever wandered why the blonde's always die first? Watch thisand you will know why! A classic movie in my books! Can't wait to getit on DVD! 10/10

rocknroll_demon (01 May 2013)

It doesn't take itself seriously.... so neither should you.

I can't understand why people are giving this movie one or two stars:it honestly is not that bad!OK, so it isn't going to win any awards, or be lauded in the top 100movies of all time, but if you enjoy this movie for what it is - apretty stupid horror-comedy - then you will not be disappointed.I think what most people seem to be having trouble with is thecomparison to The Evil Dead (admittedly, a far superior film). The onlycomparison I really saw was the fact that it take place in a cabin inthe woods. And what the smeg do you expect from a film that has thetitle 'The Cabin in the Woods'?!? OK, it has zombies/demons too, butthese are totally different to the ones in Raimi's work. They aren'tfunny for a start. The biggest problem I had was with the sloppy CGI. Some of it lookeddated, and some of it just dumb. But money was spent where it needed tobe spent. The monsters/demons is where the good CGI lays. Luckily, theextra money seems to have been paid to the cast who all do a reallygood job (and a nice bit of eye candy too!)It had some really goodatmospheric scenes with good amounts of tension, but when the actualshocks came, it was too little too late.Overall, if you go into this movie expecting big things then of courseyou will be disappointed. But watch this knowing that it is atongue-in- cheek poke at the genre and you will have a good time. It's not the best movie ever, but it sure as hell (pun intended) isn'tthe worst either.5/10

expected much.... but

this was pretty much a waste of timeevery once in a while there is a horror movie with a good score. for meas a horror movie lover i just had to watch it. didn't even looked atthe trailer, for me was clear: this movie can't be bad at all!! like iwrote in the title... the expectations were high, but hands down... itsucked! it's just another teeny "comedy" with some blood inside. it'spredictable right from the start, except for this strange parts werethey bet money on how they gonna die, and celebrate. was justconfusing... nothing more.sorry about this negative review. if you're into movies like pirania 3dyou should give it a try... if you think pirania sucked, don't try thisone.

emdoub (30 April 2013)

Redeeming qualities, but disappointing

I'm a Joss Wheedon fan, so I had pretty high expectations for this -and it just didn't live up to them. For a John Carpenter movie, this'dbe pretty much middle of the road, and for a Ewe Boll flick, this wouldbe a masterpiece, but it's not really up to Joss's usual standards. The single most disappointing part of the movie is the editing - muchof the action is shown in dimly-lit, flash-cut closeups. The filmeditors, having seen all of the footage shot, know what's going on;they forget that the audience doesn't, and much of the action leavesthe audience wondering what the heck just happened. This trend incinematography is already longer-lived than it deserved; maybeHollywood will get over the 'flash cuts cause excitement' nonsense andget back to telling the story, rather than manipulating the audience.Other than that, there was a new twist on an old genre, some good fun, some mystery to solve, some characters you could care about, and anunusual ending. Worth seeing, but don't expect a masterpiece, andaccept that there's action that you won't quite be able to see.

prettyinink1970 (30 April 2013)

Dreadful and Shameful

The rating on this movie (which is part of the reason I watched it)just goes to show you that you simply cannot rely on the voting systemhere at IMDb anymore. There are entirely way too many cast and crewgoing and "reviewing" their own movies and giving them ridiculouslyhigh votes. As an unbiased viewer, I can sum it up in one short sentence: thismovie was a ridiculous, laughable and shameful waste of time.I absolutely love horror movies. I don't expect much of a storyline, but something plausible is always nice. In Cabin in the Woods, it seemslike they tried TOO hard to make a storyline, and a joke of one atthat.I'm still cringing at the fact that I actually wasted an hour and ahalf of my time on this trash. Ugh.

Michael Payne (28 April 2013)

A Visual Feast

What starts off as your stereotypical 'college kids go on vacation to aremote backward hillbilly location horror movie' bursts into anunbelievable feast of visual horror. I can't help making comparisons toThirteen Ghosts, not regarding the storyline, but due to the variety ofhorrific characters, only much, much better. This movie goes from theobvious seen it all before, to a breathtaking jaw dropping second half. The appearance of an unexpected cast member adds a further surpriseelement to this 'visual feast'... A sure fire horror classic. Insummary it's the Truman Show meets The Evil Dead meets Thirteen Ghosts.A must watch for horror fans.

Beatrice McClearn (28 April 2013)

Not the average cabin movie

This movie had me guessing for a long time. At one point, I becamebored as I tried to figure out if the plot were similar to that of theHunger Games in the sense of people being placed in controlledatmospheres. In fact, I really enjoyed the whole idea of sacrificial"lambs" as a means of keeping the evil Gods at bay. Although I givethis movie an 8 rating, it's merely on the fact that the director chosenot to make this a typical cabin horror flick. I think much of theaudience was surprised to know that there was a reason for thekillings, a reason that kept us on the edge of our seats. And it keptme guessing. How did they contain all of the alien/ancient specimen buthad no real means of fighting them off? That alone keeps this moviefrom getting a 9 rating. lol
