The Devil's Double 10/10

I started loving this film within the first few seconds. This film hasmany redeeming features and I personally found it very enjoyable.Director Lee Tamahori brings a lot of the key Oscar-winning players ofthe Slumdog team back for this new film. Latif / Dominic Cooper Thehuman connection element was most fascinating, as we wonder what wewould do if placed in a similar situation ??? We are really "with"Latif on his journey, as we see him discover a reason to live and howhis life perspective changes, not just how to get free from UdaySaddam. The Devil's Double, does not simply prove the point that humanswill do whatever it takes to survive in dire circumstances. In fact, Imight argue 9 of 10 people wouldn't do what Latif Yahia (DominicCooper) does in this film. The Devil's Double, A Definite must-see10/10 stars.

Solid action thriller that is a must see

I remember seeing the trailer for this ages ago and thinking it lookedinteresting. I wasn't sure what to expect, a biography or moremainstream and as it turns out this would appear to be a mainstreamfictional action flick that uses a real man (Uday Hussein) and evenfactual historical events to tell a thrilling, rip roaring actionstory. Certainly the lead performance is powerful and very well doneand the story will give you chills when you think about even a portionof this being true. The background of the Iraq countryside makes for agritty and very real portrayal of this psychotic man. I give them kudosfor telling a semi-accurate biography in a mainstream type film thatmany will see because it is presented as an action thriller.Dominic Cooper gives an absolutely riveting and powerful performance astwo very different men. He plays the soft spoken yet powerfully violentin his own way, Latif. And of course the insanely psychotic Uday.Cooper is just brilliant to watch and he is a force in this movie, anaward worthy performance! Ludivine Sagnier as decent as the lover toboth Latif and Uday. She doesn't stun in her performance and that's toobad because the potential was there for her to really shine but shegets buried by the superior Cooper. Raad Rawi also doesn't particularlystand out in his performance as the one overseeing everything. He hassort of a quiet subtle force about him but he also gets cast aside nextto Cooper. I would have loved to have seen more from Philip Quast, whoplays Saddam Hussein. He looks the part but also commands presence onscreen. I would love to have seen more of him in his part and also thedynamic between him and Cooper playing his son.Director Lee Tamahori is someone to watch because he really has been aterrific story teller in film making. His films might not be hugeHollywood blockbusters but he clearly has a style that is justincredibly watchable and fun and entertaining. The Devil's Double isdefinitely an adult action thriller. Sex, drugs, nudity, bad language, gritty, horrifying violence...it has everything if you're looking foran R Rated flick but most importantly it has a great story, rivetingperformance and is incredibly entertaining. Definitely worth seeing!8.5/10

Extraordinary performance,Brilliant making

As we didn't know much about internal affairs of Iraq during Saddam'sera,I think director Lee has made a good opportunity for us to knowabout those time and the crimes of Saddam's son Uday. This moviespecially reveals how Uday abuse the power to satisfy his lust to womenand also his freakishness about how brutally he tortured and killedpeople. This movie made a good point that there would never be goodjustices by dictators. This movie also showed the very luxurious lifeincluding whores and slaves of Saddam's family which resemblance tomedieval king and emperors. Director lee made a note about history thatStalin,Shah,Saddam used double, which is an unrevealed fact. The actingof Dominic is simply extraordinary. He played two roles uday and latifwhich were very opposite roles. But he has made very good distinction ofthese two characters in whole movie.Performing the character of udaywas so hard but he made it successfully by his talent anddiligence.Director Lee has made a brilliant job here.Hismaking, screenplay were simply mind blowing.

Not for the Faint of Heart

The Devil's Double is a film based on the memoirs of Latif Yahai whoacted as Uday Hussein's double. Uday one of Saddam Hussein's sons is amorally depraved, addict, rapist, who's psychopathic behaviourtransforms any person around him -especially Uday- into * Schrödinger'scat. *The Devil's Double is directed by Lee Tamahori whose filmographyincludes; Next, Die another Day, and The Edge. Based on the book by thesame name and written by Latif Yahai. Similar films: Bronson.Despite it's interesting premise The Devil's Double fails on manylevels. Rather than being a political or revealing documentary likefilm, it settles for 108 minutes of violence, with a few news clips inbetween. The script and overall story line or lack there of does nothighlight the main themes of sacrificing oneself only to transform intoa devil, but focuses on a convoluted millionaire's fear and terrortactics. focusing mostly on violence the fine line of becoming not only thephysical form of someone but mental form of someone could have beenexplored further. The acting in the film is what makes it worthwatching, Dominic Cooper who was just recently in Captain America doesthe difficult job of portraying both Uday and Latif. His frighteningreal portrayal of Uday makes me truly believe he is a devil. The onlyflaw is the lack of personality overlap by the seemingly incorruptibleLatif. Not for the faint of heart The Devils' Double although, unfulfillingshowcases Dominic Cooper's skillful acting and includes some thoughtprovoking sub-text.--6/10--

hard to find in a cinema?

Every now and again a movie comes along that satisfies all thecriteria, great story, great acting, cinematography and direction. TheDevil's Double is that movie, based on the true story of Latif Yahia, the Iraqi Army Lieutenant forced to become the double for SaddamHussein's eldest son Uday Hussein it is a gripping, violent (althoughsome of the stronger scenes are left to the imagination) emotionalroller-coaster ride. Although not historically accurate and having readthe book of the same name not 100% true to that either, it does bearenough resemblance to the original story to hold up, touted as "agangster movie set in the middle east" it is indeed that, with scenesthat stand alongside those in "Goodfellas" or "Scarface" it isdefinitely worth watching. It is out of the cinemas here in the US now, more's the pity but we can look forward to the DVD, having said thatthe movie certainly did not reach it's full cinematic potential here inthe states and because of that when it is released on DVD a lot ofpeople are going to think that it was a "straight to DVD production"which of course it wasn't. Well done to the production teams thatbrought this project together, a totally European "Indie" movie, itcertainly looks "Hollywood". I've heard through the grapevine thatthere may be a push for an Oscar nomination for the lead, DominicCooper, it's well deserved, his dual role as both the victim LatifYahia and the villain Uday Hussein are indeed the stuff of Oscar makingdreams, his ability to swap between the two roles is for want of abetter word brilliant, you are never, ever, left wondering who you arewatching on the screen, unless of course that is the desired effect. Iwould recommend that you see it in the cinema because that is how itwas shot, for cinema, but since we can't here anymore if you didn't geta chance to watch it the first time around, rent or better still buythe DVD you won't be sorry, it's a classic, a movie that will stand thetest of time and will be enjoyed for many, many years to come.

With great power comes great irresponsibility

"The Devils Double" gives a slice of life when wealth and power areserved in large portions (and Papa the great is always around to pickup the tab!). Son of Saddam Hussein sitting high up on the food chain,Uday Hussein's lust for power, cocaine and woman is something thatcannot be tamed. On the other hand there is God fearing and high onmoral upbringing Latif Yahiya, who is coerced into signing a pact withthe devil.Dominic Cooper breathes life into the Gemini characters, the Dr. Jekyll& Mr. Hyde act is indeed Academy awards material. When he dons the capof Uday Hussein, there is a striking rawness in his performance whichmakes it stunningly good. When he switches to Latif Yahiya, he ismeasured and precise to highlight the anguish and suffocation withinthe walls of a golden palace but smeared in blood. Sarrab (LudivineSagnier) is love-interest to both Uday Hussein and Latif Yahiya. In thepenultimate moments she ends being a contrived character. The storystays focused on the junior, owing to which Saddam Hussein (PhilipQuast) is on purpose relegated to the background, however the dictatorin his prime comes across quite virile and commanding.Verdict: Quite an interesting watch indeed!

The Emperor Hath Not ANY Halibaments!

*Spoiler Alert* I am utterly shocked by the rave reviews this film hasgarnered from this site. My friend asked me to watch this sickeningmovie and I agreed, after hearing similarly rave reviews from myfriends. What an utter waste of time this was! A few bums wandering aroundBagdad, getting themselves into nonsensical situations and utteringobscenities every minute or so. If anything, this is a sad reflectionof meaningless suburban existence (what's with the obsession overhaving a double??!). Like one reviewer said, this movie left me withnothing--no feelings of warmth, poignancy or encouragement.Sure, there were some brilliant camera shots (a handful), but notenough to sustain a movie. The dream sequences were just bizarre...likesomething a stoned artist would dream up. Again, the setting of themovie (boring Bagdad) did not help bolster my interest level.Dear me, there were times when I felt like stepping into the movie andbazooka-ing all the characters just so it would end! I was unmoved bythe movie and completely bored out of my wits. 2 out of 4 of my friendsleft half-way through the movie (wisely enough). The series of'revelations' (oooh! aaah!) at the end were trite and unsatisfying. We all have our own opinions on this movie, but please, and 8.0 is waymore than what this stinking mess deserves! Movies like this are theresult of a culture that has become so saturated with material wealth, prosthetic 'beauty' and glamour that triteness and meaninglessness(along with gratuitous violence and obscenity) become glamorized.

Less historical more hysterical.

Its a well known fact that back during his pomp , Saddam Hussein hadmany body doubles . It's not that well known that his oldest son , whowas a nut job , also had a double and this the story of Uday Husseinand his reluctant double Latif. The Devil's Double is an interesting story that is told in an over thetop extravagant way and is entertaining for the most part but i wouldhave liked this film much more if the director took it a little bitmore seriously. One of the problems is the lead actor Dominic Cooper . He plays thepart of latif really well but when it comes to playing Saddam's son hecant quite cope with the job. He goes well over the top and turn theman into a bit of a comical character and that's a real shame. It's still not a bad film but i would have much preferred thehistorical instead of the hysterical.

SnakesOnAnAfricanPlain (02 May 2012)

Cooper is amazing.

A look into the seedy and disgusting world of Uday Hussein and hisunfortunate body double. This is like the Prince and the Pauper, if theprince were a homicidal rapist. The film prays on our fears ofhelplessness as Latif is forced to do Uday's bidding, or his familywill be punished. Dominic Cooper is incredible in a double performance, where you soon forget he is playing both parts. His Uday is a cartoonvillain that is kind of dorky, but he knows how to capture the manicviolence. As Latif he is a strong but broken man, who in a way inspiresthose around him to stand up to Uday. The film does well to shock, without ever becoming too gratuitous. Sometimes it shows the violence, sometimes the aftermath, and sometimes the mere mention of what hashappened is enough to make you cringe. Tamahori, as his past wouldsuggest, is more comfortable with action than out and out tension.Something tells me I should have been as scared of Uday as I am ofPesci in Scorsese films. This isn't Cooper's fault, but the fast natureof the movie and the blaring 80's soundtrack. People can debate whetherany of this is true or not, but the film makes for a diabolical treat, one that doesn't glorify a life of excess.

If I'd have known about the door behind me I'd have left 15 minutes in

I've just seen this at the Berlin Film Festival, its rare for me to hate everything about a film, but for this one I'm making a special exception. The idea of a film about Saddam's son and his double seems an interesting one in the least, to be fair this could have worked as either a horror, action or comedy, but Lee Tamahori seems here to be drink driving his way between all three genres and mowing everything down in his path.At the opening, the cinematography signalled all that was bad to come, soon after it was confirmed that the acting and direction both suffered a similar fate.Dominic Cooper gives a truly embarrassing and shameful performance, trying for some inexplicable reason to emulate Freddie Mercury whilst playing Saddam's psychotic son, turning him into a comedy character above anything else, adding no threat or menace whatsoever. His other performance as Latif, the eponymous character is barely worth mentioning.Lee Tamahori manages to hash up every directorial aspect of this film beginning with his use of what has to be the worst and in parts most unnecessarily awful script I've ever heard.I could go on.In conclusion, avoid this film like the plague, if we're lucky it won't even be picked up for distribution.

The Vidiot Reviews...

The Devil's DoublePolitical figures that are looking for an impersonator, should use anSNL cast member - not only are they spot-on, but no one will mind ifthey're assassinated.Unfortunately, for the dead-ringer in this drama, the dictator heresembles is looking locally for his double. When an Iraqi citizen, Latif (Dominic Cooper), with a strikingsimilitude to Uday (Dominic Cooper), the eldest son of Saddam Hussein(Philip Quast), is asked to service as Uday's political decoy, herefuses.Latif quickly learns, however, that you don't say no to the sadisticson of a dictator.Forced to emulate and pal around with the unhinged heir, Latif'srestraint is pushed to its limits as he watches Uday murder and rapewhomever he pleases. With two superb performances from Dominic Cooper, The Devil's Double isan explicit, stylistic, overblown masterpiece.Thankfully, for American politicians, their country is full of crazy, old, white look-a-likes. be available for sex or die

Set in the Iraq of Saddam Hussein, 'The devil's double' deals with ahighly original theme: the whereabouts of a stand-in for one ofSaddam's sons. And what a son! Neurotic & sex-obsessed, and always ready to makesevere reprisals against those who get across. As a son of the mightySaddam the limits of the law obviously do not bother you.So it's not surprising that the stand-in son soon gets troubled bymoral dilemmas en responsibilities. The same goes for his femalecompanion, acted out by Ludivine Sagnier. She soon swaps the realSaddam-son for the fake one.All this drama is surrounded by good authentic film-material aboutSaddam's war against Kuwait in 1991. Inculding president Bush senior'smilitary intervention. As well as by, as far as I can judge, arealistic picture of the Iraq society of those days. The male lead is acted out well by Dominic Cooper. In slight contrast,Ludivine Sagnier impresses less in her role as an Iraqi-Arab vamp ofdubious reputation. I feel the producer of 'The devil's double' shouldhave done better to hire an Arab actress.Ludivine's acting makes the only slight flaw in this well-made film.

A very bad cartoon....

Imagine if Lloyd Kaufman had suddenly been given 20 million dollars tomake a movie. And now imagine if he hired a Jerry Lewis/Freddie Mercuryimpersonator to play the lead. Now imagine that its based on a truestory, but with all the truth muted to a glossy sheen. Now imaginereally bad CGI effects in place of old school FX.Welcome to the world of The Devil's Double, the supposedly true storyof Uday Hussein and his fiday or body double Latif Yahia. This could have been a remarkable film with real rounded characters anda story arc on the level of the best of Shakespeare. Instead, what weget is a very bad cartoon filled with poor drawings by poor animators.Shame really.

The Upcoming (29 April 2012)

A must-watch for Cooper's performance alone, but expect to be troubled as well as thrilled throughout.

The posters for director Lee Tamahori's The Devil's Double (18) declareit to be "Scarface of Arabia", referring both to Brian De Palma's 1983gangster opus Scarface and the film's setting during Saddam Hussein'sbrutal rule in Iraq. The Devil's Double is based on the true story ofLatif Yahia, an Iraqi soldier chosen by the regime to be thebody-double of the dictator's infamous son Uday, with both roles playedby Dominic Cooper. The perks of the job are acceptable: enough designer clothing andwilling women to make the average Premiership footballer looking like atrappist monk. However, the downsides are considerable too: torture, being shot at – and the fact that the penalty for seeking alternativeemployment is the death of Latif's entire family.Dominic Cooper stars in Devil's Double with Ludivine Sagnier.Dominic Cooper stars in Devil's Double with Ludivine Sagnier. It is easy to see why The Devil's Double has been compared to agangster film. All the whirring, terrifying madness of Uday's world isdepicted with the brutal verve one finds in Scarface and other films ofits ilk. Instigating nightclub orgies while American bombs areexploding and shooting at loyal companions in psychotic rages are allpart of Uday's regular routine. The direction, intermingling footage of Operation Desert Storm withdebauchery, captures the craziness of Uday and Latif's world with alurid style.Again, like a great underworld film, Cooper's performance as thecentral villain is masterful, capturing Uday's menacing madness andchewing the scenery in between sucking breasts or shovelling cocaine uphis nose. His performance as Latif is equally striking, but in a morenuanced way. We are never in doubt which one Cooper is portraying; hissickened desperate body language showing through even when Latif isUday.Yet this film is not Scarface, and Uday is not Tony Montana. TonyMontana, like most anti-heroes found in films depicting criminals, hada form of morality. It may have been a twisted, cocaine-fuelledmorality but it was one none the less. Uday has no morality; worse thanthat, he's evil even by the standards of his father, a man who thoughtnothing of gassing entire ethnic groups. This gives the film a heart ofdarkness. Uday is possibly one of the most horrifying characters everto grace a cinema screen, proving it at regular harrowing intervalswith crimes of a scarcely believable depravity. This leads me to the film's central flaw. Despite Cooper's performance,Latif's story never quite feels as compelling as it should be. Thescript at times makes a good man's forced descent into hell on Earthseem more like a mob underling's troubled conscience upon witnessinghis boss go too far. One scene, which directly juxtaposes his actionsin saving others from Uday's horrors, doesn't have anywhere near theemotional resonance it should. One gets a sense that in trying to showus a world in which a moral compass is more likely to be thrust intothe genitals of an innocent than providing any sort of guidance, thefilm has lost some of its humanity along with its protagonists.Despite these flaws, though, The Devil's Double is still an excellentfilm. It is a brave attempt to portray a difficult and scarcelybelievable story. Even its failure to completely emote isunderstandable given the skill with which it presents its harrowingworld. Due to this, and possibly the performance of the year fromDominic Cooper, its flaws are eminently forgivable.Verdict: ●●●● A must-watch for Cooper's performance alone, but expectto be troubled as well as thrilled throughout.Read more reviews on www.theupcoming.co.uk

Great Movie

The Devil's DoubleWhen I first heard of this movie, I was quite interested. In fact, Ihad seen the trailer every time. Many people are familiar with Saddamand his cruelty but this Movie shows Uday Hussein's menace which isless looked upon. The time period is during/after the Gulf war in 1991but focused a little before when Iran-Iraq had a war.A look alike man by the name of Latif Yahya becomes Uday Hussein's bodydouble and faces a life cruelty. The Pluses: Great Scenery, The acting of Dominic Cooper and his role(he looked authentically Arab)The action, and they show various warclips of Iraq which is helpful to some. The dude who played SaddamHussain actually looked liked him. The girls were great, especially thegirl who played the Concubine, SarrabThe Minuses: This is an R-rated flick so expect a lot of violence, cussing sex and nudity especially towards the end.Overall, The Devil's Double is a great Fictional film, notice I saidfictional as some events are taken out of proportion. i give this an8/10

Struggle between the life of a man's family and serving a evil tyrant

The trailer to this movie was intriguing, now was this movie was greatas the trailer made it seem. Not really but it's still a pretty darngood movie that shows how evil and sadistic a person can get inhistory. The movie starts out really interesting and the acting by theactor that plays two characters was almost superb. It was amazing tosee an actor play two completely different characters, each very wellacted as the other. The story is this, and yes this is based on thetrue story not sure how much of this movie is true. But a lot of thestuff happening in this movie was plausible. Anyways there is this guynamed Latif Yahia who wants to serve his country but is forced to servea evil sadistic tyrant Uday Hussein. Who is almost the epitome of evilbecause of his very corrupt actions and his crime towards humanity. Themain struggle in this movie is how Latif and his decisions, how heeither has to serve Uday and help him in his corrupt and evil ways orsee the death of his family. And the constant struggle between thesetwo options is the main center of the plot. The problem with this moviethough is how it draws you in for a bit over an hour but start to loseit's edge a bit into the movie. It just seemed like the movie waslonger than it had to be, the plot isn't convoluted at all. And for asimple story as this, the movie just seemed to be drawn out after awhile. But overall it's a movie that is worth seeing, since the shockvalue of it all. How one man can cause so much suffering while anotheris forced to watch and help the man behind the suffering.7.6/10

I made you Latif! I MADE YOU!

When they were filming Scarface I don't think they thought that thelines "Say hello to my little friends" was going to be absorbed intopopular culture. Neither do I believe that Michael Thomas the screenwriter of The Devil's Double think that the line above "I made youLatif, I MADE YOU !" would stick in the heads of not only me but myother friends who went to watch the Devil's Double last night. Based onthe true story of Latif Yahia, the man forced to become the Fiday orbody Double of Uday , Saddam Hussein's oldest and psychotic son. Bothparts are played by actor Dominic Cooper ( Mamma Mia!, An Education,History Boys) a huge departure form his "softer" roles, where heusually plays a love interest or gentleman. He is so convincing, thatyou forget that you are watching one guy playing two roles, wellactually three, Uday, Latif, Latif being Uday! It's confusing justsaying it, try doing it! The film itself is loud, colorful and so'80's, not that I remember them very well but having seen a few '80'smovies recently I marveled at where they got the shiny suits from! Itis definitely a guy's movie, (but the girls will be captivated byDominic in all his guises) and by that I mean fast cars, mustaches, cigars and lots of semi naked girls! There's a bit of a love triangle,Uday, Sarrab,(played by hot French actress Ludivine Sagnier, see TheSwimming Pool) Latif. It's fast paced, action packed and does make youthink, how could a guy survive that life? What were his options? Ohyeah, a bit of techie stuff, it was filmed on R.E.D the new digitalsystem, see if you can tell the difference in picture quality. Ienjoyed it, my bro's enjoyed it. See for yourself.

The Devil's Double 10/10

Three are three very good reasons to go to see The Devil's Double, firstly Dominic Cooper, outstanding in his dual roles as the good guy(Latif Yahia) and the bad guy (Uday Saddam Hussein). Based on the truestory of how Latif Yahia was forced to become Uday's body double orbullet-catcher, it's riveting stuff. Secondly, it just looksincredible, it's hard to describe, seemingly it's a low budget moviebut it certainly doesn't look like it is. I've seen some articles wherethe journalist has said it's a "Hollywood" production, so it seems eventhey have been fooled by the lush looks of it! Thirdly, it has a reallystrong supporting cast, I'm not familiar with any of them but Icouldn't say that I thought anyone didn't give their fullest to themovie. Having watched a few other Iraq films, I would have to say thatThe Devil's Double has the best Saddam I've seen yet, the actor, PhilipQuast really looks and acts the part, it's incredible. I give it myhighest recommendations, if you want a movie that's not all fluff andhas a great story and strong acting go see it.

Angel Dickey (24 April 2012)

The Devil's Double Highly recommended.

The Devil's Double is based on the true story of Latif Yahia an IraqiLieutenant kidnapped from the front-line in the Iran/Iraq war to becomethe body double for Saddam Hussein's notoriously vicious and sadisticson Uday. Directed by Lee Tamahori it has all the action, brutality andspeed that you would expect for a movie of this genre, "A gangstermovie set in the Middle East" it certainly is, a "modern day Scarface"it may well be too. Dominic Cooper gives an outstanding performance inthe Dual roles of Latif and Uday Saddam Hussein, never leaving youguessing who exactly he is playing at any one time but cementing thebelief that there are two men in opposing roles. "Striking" and "Oscarworthy" are two descriptions that I wish to use to portray his deliveryof what can only be an actors dream, to dominate the whole screen andtry to upstage yourself. He has a very strong supporting cast whoalthough may not be "household names" deliver on every level, withspecial mention to Philip Quast as possibly the best Saddam Hussein Ihave seen on screen, Raad Rawi as Munem Hammed -a good man in a badjob- and Ludivine Sagnier who plays Sarrab -the apex of the lovetriangle- is seductive and possibly the only female in the this"Moustaches and Marlboro" movie with lines. Don't believe for a secondthat this movie lacks depth, you do leave with vivid images andthinking about recent history and beyond, the intention to provokethought may not have been high on Lee Tamahori's list but that doesn'tmean it wasn't a by-product. As this movie is "based on the true story"I decided to do a little more research into Latif Yahia the man. His isthe kind of story that I suppose you have to be from a certain decadeto be familiar with, although he has a vast collection of interviews, blogs, has written three books -The Devil's Double written in 1994being the one the movie was adapted from- and a further two books to bereleased next year. He also has his own website a Facebook page and ifyou care to, you can follow him on twitter. I find his viewpointfascinating personally, brave/courageous would be other words I woulduse to describe him, but then if you have lived with the Devil youwould need to be wouldn't you?
