Timeless hilarity

The Naked Gun came out when I was only eight years old, and way too young toappreciate a lot of its jokes. Still, there was enough low-brow andphysical comedy to crack me up, and it was one of my early favorite movies. And while I've outgrown a lot of stuff I liked at that age, I can stillwatch The Naked Gun and laugh, and I even get the jokes that went way overmy head as a young'un.The film, subtitled From The Files of Police Squad!, couldn't be simpler, and that's the way they want it. Lt. Frank Drebin has to to clear the nameof his partner Norberg (The now ironic OJ Simpson) while protecting the lifeof Queen Elisabeth, in Los Angeles on a tour of America. For ninetyminutes, the movie exploits, and frequently ignores, the plot in the name ofjokes. Just plain and simple, this movie is out to make you laugh, and itwill sink to any depth to get there. Everyone has their favorite Naked Gun moment; mine has to be Leslie Nielsenperforming the worst rendition of the Star Spangled Banner in history. Hisfireside monologue about a lost love who played the harp is priceless aswell.Kudos also to Ricardo Montalban's performance as real estate tycoon VincentLudwig. So ridiculous is his accent and accentuations that he makes evenstraight lines funny. I'll never get tired of him saying to a frightenedPriscilla Presley, "It was easy my dear! You forget I spent two years as abuilding contractor!" Stupidty at its funniest. This is not a classic, and it didn't change the face of comedy (It is afterall, a simple application of the "Airplane!" formula to cop movies), but TheNaked Gun is funny, and it never loses its charm no matter how many timesyou watch it.

If Only O.J. Wasn't in it

This review is from: The Naked Gun - From the Files of Police Squad! (DVD) I love this movie. I remember laughing nearly till i choked all the way through it the first time that i saw it in the theater. I'd buy it right now if only O.J. wasn't in it. I just can't bare to watch the scenes with him in them, he has spoiled one of my favorite movies for me.

Funniest movie ever

This is the perfect movie. It's amazing that every single attempt athumorin this film hits the mark. I've watched this way too many times, andeachtime I pass by it while flipping the channels, I sit there and watch itagain.I'm a huge fan of the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker trio. I would list this,Airplane! and Top Secret as my three favorite movies of all time. The best part about this movie is Leslie Nielsen's performance. In recentfilms, Nielsen has played his characters as clowns who are trying to befunny. That's a major mistake. In The Naked Gun, he plays Lt FrankDrebinas a serious character(much like his performance as the doctor inAirplane!), and it really makes the movie.

Nielsen's finest series...

Naked Gun is without a doubt one of the best comedy series of all time.Leslie Nielsen gave the character Frank Drebin life as a slick cop with analways interesting head for thoughts. He isn't a bumbler like InspectorClouseau but he is rather funny. The slapstick humor in this movie worksoutjust fine. From everything as eating a Dugout Dog full of things to givingaway remarks regarding Nordberg (O.J. before his tribulation) as Nordbergisseriously wounded. This show is a complete genius of a show and isrewardedwith good stuff. The other two sequels are sort of going hardcore on theslapstick and should take a breather...

Funny Movie

I Think The Naked gun was one of the funniest movies ever. I think LeslieNielsen was funny and it was the Zucker Brothers best movie sinceAIRPLANE. If they ever make a sequel to the Naked Gun Installment, I would mostdefinetly see it.

Stupid Comedy as an Art Form: One of the funniest films ever made

THE NAKED GUN: FROM THE FILES OF POLICE SQUAD! (1988) **** Leslie Nielsen,Priscilla Presley, Ricardo Montalban, George Kennedy, OJ Simpson. ClassicZAZ comedy adaptation of the cult tv parody "Police Squad!" with Nielsenborn to play dumb as a fox Lt. Frank Drebin, the constantly bunglingAmerican cousin to French Inspector Clouseau, out to prevent anassassination attempt on the visiting Queen of England. Classic slapstickand sight-gags aplenty

What can I say? This is humor at it's best.Never before have I seen a movie with so many corny, offbeat, humor andjokes. They came early and often, and after you watch this movie and don'tcome out laughing or smiling, then something is wrong. This is slapstick comedy at its best

"John Housman's name Forgotten"

To my chagrin, while viewing "The Naked Gun" on CD at home, it grubbed my attention that John Hauseman's name was omitted both from the opening and closing credits for this movie. In spite of the fact, that in the commentary to this movie, by its producers, writers, and director they bragged that they had to remember and credit any person; no matter how tiny was his contribution. Indeed they didn't "forget" the names of supernumeraries', stand-outs, even the names of a man and a woman from the firework deleted scene are remembered and credited. But, John Houseman's name was omitted; a person of stature in the film and theater industry, a producer, drama teacher, an Oscar winner actor for "The Paper Chase" as Prof. Kingsfield. JH had a memorable cameo scene as a driving instructor, yet his name was skipped and he was deprived of all credits for this movie ;it's not only saddening but a gross injustice too.The first time I saw " The Naked Gun" was in a movie theater in Israel. When JH appeared on screen, there was a joyful shouting all over the hall: "Professor Kingsfield!! ...Kingsfield ...did you see that?! ". J.H. is known all over the world and yet already forgotten by his own peers....The movie is entertaining, witty and satirical with slapstick situations that confer light mood and belly-laughs.

By Far One of the Most Funniest Movies

I probably have seen this movie thousands of times and i have always laughedharder each time. This movie is a spoof with alot of laughter plus a fairlygood plot to such a ridiculous movie. Leslie Neilson cant do anything elseother than spoofs. Its hard to take him serious in some of his older roles.Ive seen funny spoofy movies but this one next to spaceballs is the funniestspoof ive ever seen. There are many movie i feel shouldnt even be at the topwhere this one should always be.

probably my favorite movie of all time

Naked Gun is probably my favorite movie of all time. It is one of only ahandful of movies that I can watch again and again and find the jokes asfunny, if not funnier, as the first time I saw them. Naked Gun is veryclose to being a perfect movie for me.

Hilarious

I just love these stupid Leslie Nielson movies, they are so stupid that they are great. The Naked Gun is probably the funniest of Nielson's comedies. I highly recomend.

One of the Funniest Movies Ever

This Movie is hilarious. It's is hilarious from the start, when Frank Drebin stops some terrorists. The movie is hilarious from start to finish. The best part is the truck driver scene. I won't ruin it for you. Rent this movie. It's worth the money. It deserves ten stars. It is so hilarious, you'll laugh so hard. I loved this movie.

Nielsen/Sellers???

Classic comedy by makers of "Airplane." Nielsen is so good as Lt. Drebin.Great spoof of cheesy detective films and romance ones too (see life sizecondom scene). So many great parts. My favorite: when Hocken says thereisa 10 % chance of there being a 50/50 chance of Nordberg recovering. Thisistruly great comedy, reminiscent of Peter Sellers as the bumbling InspectorClouseau. I'm split between Sellers and Nielsen and the Pink Panthers andNaked Guns, as to which are better. Who cares, their allgreat.

Thank the Zucker-brothers for casting Leslie Nielsen

When I first saw "The Naked Gun", I was 14 years old. After the film was over I was stunned. I didn't think that it is possible to make a film that funny. I was constantly laughing during the 80 minutes the movie lasted. The main reason for that (aside from the very funny gags of the screnplay) is the great acting of Leslie Nielsen. His Lt. Drebin doesn't seem to notice that something funny is going on. This understatement fits perfectly. If he overacted the film would be far less funny (a mistake that is often made in the late Mel-Brooks-spoofs). Not only Nielsen seems to know that. George Kennedy, Ricardo Montalban and Priscilla Presley also find the right tone. The film spawned two sequels which weren't bad but became less and less funny. "The Naked Gun" is still the funniest film by the trio Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker (perhaps alongside the also very good "Airplane").

A good 80's comedy

Leslie Nielsen heads a talented cast in the first "Naked Gun" film. Hestars as Lt. Frank Drebin, and his bumbling pursuit of a criminalmastermind serves as the main plot in "The Naked Gun". Along the way hemust also act as security for the Queen of England who is making avisit, which allows for more hilarious antics from one of the mostfunny actors in Hollywood.Nielsen is supported by a great cast including Priscilla Presley as hislove interest Jane Spencer (the scene where they have "safe sex" isperhaps one of the funniest scenes I have ever seen in a movie),Ricardo Montalban as the villainous Vincent Ludwig, George Kennedy asDrebin's kind-hearted superior Captain Ed Hocken, and Nancy Marchandwho is terrific as the dismissive Mayor Barkley."The Naked Gun" is not just a straight-comedy, there are literallycountless spoofs littered throughout the film, as well as plenty ofremarks on society. Aside from the "safe sex" scene other highlyamusing scenes include Drebin and a learner driver, O.J. Simpsonsblundered attack on some crooks, and Drebin destroying a valuablecollection of artwork and statues. The main problem with the film though is that it seems to have aged.Several of the social context related jokes and themes seem lost intoday's society, but were no doubt effective in their time. Being only4 years old when the film was originally released it is a bit hard toremember though. Overall, an entertaining and enjoyable film.

A Great Stupid Funny Comedy

After watching it at least 100 times I still get a great laugh from it. Leslie Nielsen (Luitenneant reank Drebin) plays a great role as a guy who is funny but no trying to be.

Michael Clough (09 March 2013)

Lowbrow comedy at it's finest.

Lowbrow comedy at it's finest. Many people underestimate how hard it is toomake good lowbrow humour, the amount of unfunny "spoof" films is a testamentof that.Leslie Neilsen is perfect for the lead role of Lt Frank Drebin & is ablysupported by the rest of the cast. The final third of the film at the baseball game include some of thefunniest scenes committed to film. 8/10.
