Combination of Norse Mythology, CGI Effects and Dry Humor Makes for a Comic Book Epic Worth a Look

Among the Marvel Comics characters that have come to the silver screen, the biggest stretch to the imagination may be this elaborate 2011fantasy adventure because the story is rooted in Norse mythology ratherthan technology and science fiction like "Iron Man" or "Spider-man".That's probably why producer Kevin Feige chose actor Kenneth Branagh todirect since his erudite touch, showcased in his numerous Shakespeareanadaptations, is what the epic film needs to ground the more humanelements into something more relatable to the audience. That's no smallfeat considering the amount of exposition needed at the beginning togive a brief history of Asgard where its king Odin has been waging waragainst the Frost Giants of Jotunheim led by their malevolent kingLaufey. Odin has raised two sons, Thor and Loki, opposites indisposition as the arrogant Thor prepares to ascend the throne whileLoki seethes in jealousy. Thor's fate is interrupted when the FrostGiants attempt to seize the Casket of Ancient Winters.Seeking revenge, Thor recruits his band of warriors to enter battle inJotunheim, an act of defiance which causes Odin to banish Thor to Earthwhere he becomes mortal without his all-powerful hammer Mjolnir, whichis stuck in a rock in the middle of the New Mexican desert. There hemeets scientists Jane Foster and Erik Selvig and their assistant Darcy, where the movie diverges into a fish-out-of-water tale, while back inAsgard, Loki learns of his true identity as the son of Laufey andconsequently attempts to take over the throne as Odin lies in a deepsleep. There are plenty of battle sequences to tie the story togetherand keep the momentum going, including an impressive, darkly lit fightwith the Frost Giants and a classic "High Noon"-style confrontationwith a nearly indestructible automaton. However, in the screenplay byAshley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz and Don Payne, what really makes themovie great fun is its sense of humor during the New Mexico scenes, certainly enough to offset the more austere, good-versus-evil dramaoccurring back in Asgard.Ideally fitting the imposing physical dimensions of the title role,Australian actor Chris Hemsworth plays the stalwart, uncomplicated herowith aplomb. As Loki, Tom Hiddleston brings out the villain's veiledsmarminess with ease. In danger of overexposure by now (this is thefourth movie of hers I've seen in four months), Natalie Portman managesto make the most of a wafer-thin role as the plucky Jane as we aremeant to believe she is a master astrophysicist. Her comic interplaywith Kat Demmings, amusingly acidic as ever as Darcy, provides nicerelief from the action. Anthony Hopkins isn't really challenged much bythe role of Odin, but he brings his trademark authority nonetheless.Idris Elba is hardly recognizable as a stoic sentry, while Rene Russois given little to do as Odin's wife Frigga. As Selvig, StellanSkarsgård gets to play the unadventurous voice of reason on Earth, although he has an intriguing encounter with Samuel L. Jackson afterthe credits. All the production values and CGI effects are what youwould expect from a $150 million film, and surprisingly, Branaghmanages to tell the story in less time than "Bridesmaids".

Grandiose action meets simplified theme

Epic action, glorious 3D and Chris Helmsworth's rapturous good looksmake for a gratifying but hardly epiphanic outing for the first God ina crowded superhero genre. Thor is a good action movie. The battles aregrandiose and the pace and intensity of action never flags. AshleyMiller's screenplay is family friendly and the characters are ascookie- cutter as they come, with the possible exception of Loki (TomHiddleston). The special effects are cool and the different planetssufficiently spectacular. That said, Thor's kaleidoscopic production values could have donebetter with a less monochromatic storyline, and more believable acting.Despite his highs and pitfalls, Thor's character remains too much of aknight in shining armor. Perhaps a little more fallibility could havemade the character more endearing. In short, Thor is an entertaining action-packed spectacle, butdisappointing if you expect anything more.

A Truly Enjoyable Film On Every Level

This spectacular film works on so many levels but in large part becauseof the great cast and the fact that the director took this subjectmatter seriously. Casting an unknown like Chris Hemsworth was perfect.Veterans like Anthony Hopkins really shine in their roles. What can yousay about the stunningly beautiful Natalie Portman? She's just fabulousand is actually better here than in her Oscar winning role from BlackSwan. It's written well and the special effects truly are Oscar worthy.I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. If you are concerned that this film may not live up to the hype, don'tbe. Also, don't believe the naysayers at all. I'm betting they are ALLDC/Green Lantern fans afraid their film is going to get lost in thiscrowded summer. Thor being exceptional gives them pause and actuallysomething to worry about. Do yourself a huge favor and ignore them andsee this wonderful film.

an okay movie

this movie was not as good as i expected. when it came to the actionthat was okay. but the plot and the dialouge and the ending wasterrible. the movie starts out okay but then it,s all down hill fromthere. i liked the actors and actresses but i did not like thecharacters. but one things for sure this movie is not the worst movieever i mean like i said it was okay but there are definitely more worststuff that i have seen and you can trust me on that. one thing is thatthe actor that played Thor did a very fine acting job at portrayingthis character. all i have to say about Thor is it was okay. but onething it was not was a bad movie so its worth a watchrated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci fi action violence andfrightening images1hr 55min/115min**/****

Shockingly Satisfying!

Never in my life have I seen a movie like Thor. I love this movie alongwith every other Marvel film that has came before it.Plot: I haven't read any of the Thor comic books but I have seen Thorin the animated Marvel films, Ultimate Avengers 1 and 2 and NextAvengers. But I went to a bunch of wikis to brush up some history and Ireally got interested into the characters. So the plot is this. It isThor's big day to be granted King of Asgard by his father Odin untilthe Frost Giants intruded the kingdom to try and take back their Casketof Ancient Winters. Thor, Loki, Sif, and the Warriors Three go to theFrost Giants world of Jotunheim and try to fight them all off. Odincomes in the scene and, after Thor disobeys him not to go there, relieves him of his power and banishes him to Earth. There, he meetsJane Foster, Erik Selvig, and Darcy Lewis in New Mexico (the placewhere the post- credits scene of Iron Man 2 left off). Loki takes thethrone after Odin overcomes stress and falls into the Odinsleep. Thorredeems himself and reclaims his hammer to stop Loki and the dangers tocome.Cast and Acting: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and Anthony Hopkinshave brought the sense of seriousness to their characters. NataliePortman was there to help Thor and become the love interest and KatDennings and Stellan Skarsgård are also there to be hilarious. So, thecasting is good, the humor is solid, and the acting is great from startto finish.Chris Hemsworth - ThorTom Hiddleston - LokiAnthony Hopkins - OdinNatalie Portman - Jane FosterIdris Elba - HeimdallStellan Skarsgård - Erik SelvigKat Dennings - Darcy LewisColm Feore - LaufeyRay Stevenson - VolstaggTadanobu Asano - HogunJoshua Dallas - FandralJaimie Alexander - SifRene Russo - FriggaSamuel L. Jackson - Nick FurySpecial Effects: They blew me away! This movie is the first in theMarvel films to be released in 3-D. But they should have used the 3-Dmore. It works for the action scenes and the Asgard scenes, and itdoesn't work with the Earth scenes because most of it was crystal clearand has no 3-D effects. But as for the special effects, they workedgreat. From Thor throwing his hammer at the Frost Giants to the epicclimax, the effects are a spectacle to behold.Camera: Sometimes at certain scenes there are angled shots. But theangle shots are not the dutch angles seen from Battlefield Earth. They're silly angles that come out every once in a while, not all ofthe scenes. The camera was normal at most scenes from start to finish.Music: The score sounds amazing. Patrick Doyle does a fantastic jobwith the music. It's dazzling, it's amazing, and it is on par with thescore from Iron Man. They fit all of the scenes very well.Overall: This is one of the best Marvel film adaptations since X-Men,Spider-Man, Blade, Iron Man, and The Incredible Hulk. Thor is actuallyone of my favorite movies after I have seen it. I can't wait to watchit again. So everyone, I recommend you all to see it. You will not bedisappointed. 8/10

Awesome

in one word Awesome!I was really curious and excited to see Thor as I love big budgetmovies and also it's the first time I see Kenneth Branagh directing amovie like this. Normally it's not his style. So I went in and justloved it!. It's so beautiful to look at, at how beautiful they've madeAsgaard look. It's not so much a comic book movie but the Thor mythcome to life! It's funny, witty, moving ( a few scenes I admit I wascrying like when Thor was so happy to have found his hammer but couldnot lift it and the scene at the end between him and Odin, played by anastounding Anthony Hopkins who IS Odin, and does even a better job thanBob Hoskins. And yes it did remind me of The Mask with Loki etc. Thisis in my opinion the BEST movie that SIR Kenneth Branagh has ever madeand I hope they call on him if ever there's a Thor 2!

Marvel :)

I always think movies which are made out of comics are good but themovies which are made out of books may or may not be as good as thebook itself. Thor is another example. The movie is interesting as wellas entertaining. The effects are cool and Chris Hemsworth looks cool inthe role. Anthony Hopkins -- no words... Whatever part you give him, hewill blow you away.. Natalie could have been shown more glamorous ;)Personally I think the villain in this movie is a bit of a loser.Common there should have been a big fight. The villain cant lose thateasily :D There could have been lot more. But not forgetting the movierevolves mainly around Thor and his character, so that should beexpected. Overall.. This movie is worth a watch!

killer3000ad (19 April 2012)

Surprisingly good.

First off I am not a Thor fan nor i am a comic book fan. I went intothis movie with no expectations, expecting another popcorn fest alongthe lines of the Ironman movies. Therefore I was quite pleasantlysurprised by Thor. Whereas most comic book movies lack plot orstoryline, Thor actually engages the viewer with the classic tale ofloving father and the wayward son finding his way along with all thetypical action requirements of a comic book movie. I can't vouch forThor's faithfulness to the comic of course but that it still managed toentertain this none-fan is a testament to the movie. Whilst not perfectit's certainly more entertaining than that other popcorn flick, BattleLA which deserves a Razzy award. If you know nothing of Thor, go watch this movie and be entertained asThor certainly does. The only issue I may like to mention is the pooruse of 3D. The cinema I went to only had 3D for Thor and I was thusforced to watch it in 3D. Having previously being wowed by TRON LEGACYin 3D I can say that the 3D work on Thor was quite lacking. Also I feelthat 3D is been unnecessarily pushed onto EVERY movie with theslightest amount of action, and Thor's problem is many of it's actionscenes don't need the 3D treatment. My advice is watch this in normal2D and save yourself some money.

Great fun, sit back and enjoy!

Thor is a great deal of fun and exactly what escapist movies should be. The acting is what one might expect from this type of movie. It goes for cheap laughs and chuckles not deep thoughts. It doesn't take it self too seriously and it realizes it's a super hero movie. Even so I thought the acting was decent. Chris Hemsworth plays Thor quite well. Tom Hiddleston take on Loki is refreshing and the positioning of him as a somewhat tragic figure is inspired. Kenneth Branagh does a great job of making this a family type story out of Shakespeare. Granted it is not Shakespeare but one can see where he gets his inspiration. This is a fun movie and I recommend it as a fun thing to watch.

Entertaining cliché:)

first let me point out that my English isn't so good so excuse mymistakes... This movie is a Hollywood cliché...the classic hero makes amistake learns from it, saves the day etc. etc....and also i detestthat awful love story it was unnecessary and dumb...the reason I gavethe movie 8 stars because i finally got a superhero movie that wasn'tso wrecked ... i really had fun watching it, the fight scenes were goodand also they didn't make ridiculous things( besides reviving Thor thatwas a bit lame) ....I feel like my comments are harsher than my 8 starsso i would say that really the aftertaste made my mind up...i got outfrom the movies disappointed because of the cliché ending but i feltentertained my the movie a whole...

Thor Delivers a Mighty Blow with a fantastic film

The Asgardian God finally hits the big screen with the movie adaptationof Stan Lee's comic book series "THOR." Directed by Kenneth Branagh andstarring Chris Hemsworth as the mighty Thor, does this movie strikegold with the powerful Mjolnir or does it fail to live up to theMarvel's iconic name and fan expectations. I was very excited when I heard that Thor was coming out with a movieadaptation, since Thor has been my favourite superhero for many years.I was expecting a decent superhero along with those of 2008'sIncredible Hulk, but what I did not expect was this movie to easilybecome my superhero movie to date. All elements of this film arewell-balance, nothing seems to overwhelming. There's just the rightamount of action, comedy, and a romance story between Thor and JaneFoster wasn't to over the top but was still very effective in the end. The acting in this film is no less then top notch, every actor was ableto bring there characters to life no matter how much or little screentime they got.. Chris Hemsworth as the hammer-wielding Thor wasremarkable. Not having seen \Chris in any other film then Star Trek Iwas amazed at how he was able to carry the film on his shoulders as themain character. Natalie Portman's supporting role as physicist andThor's love interest Jane Foster truly brings the human-worldconnection to this fantasy setting. Anthony Hopkins brings anotherlegendary performance as Odin, showing great emotions through everyline he had. The highlight of this film would have to be Tom Hiddlestonperformance as the God of Mischief and Thor adoptive brother Loki. Heis able to make you feel sorry for Loki through his performance eventhough he is this evil, maniacal, villain. "Spoilers!"A great scenes of his is a conversation turned argument over Loki'struly being a frost giant offspring and realizing that he was adoptedby Odin after the war against the Frost Giants. END SPOILERSAnd of course Stan Lee has to make a cameo appearance, and he probablymakes his best one yet. THOR demonstrates exactly what a superhero adaptation needs to be. It'snot hard to recommend this film to anyone who is a fan of superherofilms and anyone who wants to see a very fun adventure. This film ismaking me very excited for the Avengers film. I hope the Avengers isthis well made when it comes out.

It's meant to entertain! It's meant to provide us with the Summer Blockbuster we've been waiting for! Unfortunately it does neither!!

THOR Directed by: Kenneth Branagh Cast: Chris Hemsworth, NataliePortman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins and Erik Selvig Dear KennethBranagh . We like you , we really do but when you take something whichis meant to be entertaining and turn it into a boring melodramatic taleof fathers and sons who like to play with trippy lights and hammerswhich go underutilised in one place throughout most of the film......itjust ticks us off.Thor is a summer blockbuster. Thor is meant to be a break from lowbudget films and is supposed to provide us with a blockbuster feel. Butunfortunately it does neither. Instead what you get is a movie whichstarts off well, introduces good looking characters and then while wewait for that moment which leaves you grasping for air it takes a divedown and provides us utter disappointment. Like many others I lovesummer blockbusters. It's that time of the year when we don't reallycare for mind boggling theatricality and twisted convoluted plots(although if we get them too along with the high budgets then twothumbs up). Instead we just like to lie back as we watch things blow upand watch characters do amazing things in slow motion. Everything inshort that a 200 million budget should provide us with. It's with that expectation that I went for Thor. Having watched acouple of films of the director I knew that although unconventional, good things were expected out of the film which claimed to have mergedthe world of mythology and superheroes in one film. Odin (AnthonyHopkins) is the king of Asgard who has claimed victory over the frostgiants. He has two sons, Loki ( Tom Hiddleton) and an arrogant yetcharismatic Thor( Chris Hemsworth) . As the elder son Thor is to stepon to the throne. But a sudden attack from the frost giants makes himdisobey his father and go to their planet to wage an attack with thehelp of his friends.Arriving just on time Odin rescues Thor and his Troupe but is enragedby his actions and henceforth banishes him to Earth and strips him ofhis powers and from his hammer (which is his mighty weapon). Arrivingon earth he bumps into Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), a scientist, whoagrees to help him in exchange for his explanation of the galacticphenomena through which he arrived on Earth. From here on most of thefilm focuses on him searching for his hammer and on discovering theplot because of which the events were in motion. As a film it started off well and did delight us with amazing effects. It even moved at a steady pace and looked all set to finish off well.Till the first half it seemed above average but then the second halftook a steep drop with the climax being a complete let down. The basicmotives of the characters seemed to be lost and we got over dosed withthe light effects and teleportations .As a super hero film the action was mostly missing replaced instead bymen in suits who looked completely lost and out of clue. Throughoutmost of the second half we kept looking forward for the wow momentswhich we felt sure had to be there. Just as we got the spark and we satup straight we realised that the moment was gone and alas it neverreturned again. Even the romantic equation between Hemsworth andPortman never actually set properly with everything feeling incomplete. As characters Chris Hemsworth did justice to his role and Portman didthe best she could with her role but the other characters hardly rousedany emotions and yes I include Anthony Hopkins as well. It seemed theypacked all that they could in the first half and let the second halfdrag and suffer in the process. Disappointing is the word.Rating 5.5/10.Vikram Agarwal for MuvieMadlyDeeply.com

Enjoyed Immensely!

I remember checking out books on Norse mythology in middle school andreading them repeatedly. I had no idea until I met my husband thatMarvel had made a comic series out of them. (Thanks, honey, for sharingyour Thor comics- even if you only let me read the Simonson run... )Anyway, I found the movie Thor very satisfying- I've watched itrepeatedly, and enjoyed it with each repetition (though my husband isnow sick of it!) Yes, Chris Hemsworth is hot. But he can also act, andI really felt sympathy for his character when he failed to retrieve thehammer at first (is that a spoiler to anyone still?) And the emotionabout losing his father and family was believable. And I also enjoyedthe portrayal of bratty 3 yr old type behavior as well... :-) So thetransition when Thor finally learns his lesson was effective for me.Tom Hiddleston's Loki was very interesting, and I look forward toseeing more of him in the Avengers. I wish the movies weren't parceledout 1 per year (*sniffle*) Too long to wait.

HE MAN of 2011

Kind of remind me of the movie Masters of the Universe in the late 80's with Dolph Lundgren as He Man and the lead star. I love both movies in their own style.

Worst movie I have seen in a long time!

I went into this movie not expecting much, but I got less than that. This movie lead me to actually make an account to IMDb just so I canwarn all you onlookers as to how bad this movie actually is. This hasgot to be one of the worse movies of 2011. The plot is god awful andthe script seems like it was written by an 8th grader with a horribleimagination. It is so choppy and it has little substance. The "IceGods" or whatever they are called look like something off a cheaplymade X-Files episode and the heroes look like sissy's themselves. Myday is officially ruined because of thismovie.............................HORRIBLE!

Hemsworth brings warmth and humor to Bombastic Thor

My expectations were set pretty low with this film. I am a bit of acomic nerd but was never really that into the Thor books. Most of myinteractions with the character were from his role in the Avengers. Asa kid I just never really related to his bombastic personality and wasfairly ignorant of his Norse God back story. This film more than enlightened me to the wonders of the Norse God ofThunder. Chris Hemsworth portrays an unbelievably ripped Thor the godof thunder in this picture. The plot centers on Thor being cast out ofAsgard by his father King Odin (Anthony Hopkins). Thor is ousted fordisobeying his father's commands and almost starting a war with thefrost giants. He is banished to earth and stripped of his godly powersand his mighty hammer mjolnir. When he reaches earth he runs into, literally, scientist Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). The rest of thefilm centers on Thor trying to get his powers back and help his FatherOdin who is gravely injured. The story itself focused extensively on the Thor Norse god originstory. More than half the picture does not take place with Thor onearth. Thankfully his bombastic personality was juxtaposed with humorand a budding romance with Jane. The cast in this film was top notchand I especially enjoyed Hopkins as mighty god king Odin and Portman asthe sexy scientist Jane. The movie has some awesome looking special effects and CGI createdmonsters. The kingdom of Asgard that is depicted is truly something tobehold. The action is fast and plentiful throughout the film, with justenough time to catch your breath and get your bearings. Your speakerswill also be getting a workout from the sounds of mighty combat.Although the action might be a little over the top for some I found itfun escapism.Unfortunately, I can't really address if the film sticks to the Marvelcomics canon. As stated previously I am just not that familiar with theThor series. I did however catch a sweet Cameo by Hawkeye (JeremyRenner) and Stan Lee makes his usual drop in. In summation this is well worth a rental for and a viewing in yourlair. While not the greatest superhero movie of all time it wascertainly entertaining. Without a doubt it whets my appetite even moreto hear Avengers assemble!

Blu Ray freezes and skips

I just bought this movie on blu ray and it skips and freezes throughout the entire movie. I took it back to the store thinking it was just that copy but I bought another one and it's doing the same thing. I heard there were problems with the X-Men First Class blu ray but that works fine for me. I guess the Thor blu ray is going to be the one to give me problems.

(03 April 2012)

Watchable but flawed

This is an enjoyable enough action movie and Chris Hemsworth makes a good Thor, there's plenty of action and alot of good humour. The downside is alot of the other characters in the movie aren't that impressive, even Anthony Hopkins is unconvincing as Odin, the guy that plays Loki is awful and what possessed Kenneth Branagh to cast Idris Elba as Hiemdall {Probably Franz Boas},and for some strange reason they made Asgard into some futuristic space station.

amazing

enjoyed the movie but don't stop watching at the end...follow all the way through the credits...enjoy the surprise, I know I did!

Enough gravitas to make it a good film

Thor was a risk to bring to the summer multiplexes. Lets face it, thereis a lot to cram into a 2hr film, especially one that is built for thesummer crowd. But Branagh is able to mix equal parts Asgard gravitasand earth levity to make a film that is thoroughly enjoyable. Most of the praise should go to Chris Hemsworth who wields the hammerwith all the confidence in the world. He was one of the few actors thatwas in both "rhelms" and he was able to give Thor the right amountgravitas and levity when it was required. Sir Anthony Hopkins is theperfect Oden. Tom Hiddleston has garnered considerable attention forLoki, and I agree he is good. But the supporting actor/character I wasmost surprised by was Natalie Portman's Jan Foster. This is probablythe first role I have seen her in where I got the sense she was totallyat ease and having a blast. I expected her to just kind of walk throughthis film, but she brought as much to this as she did in Black Swan.Totally different role and character and totally different chopsneeded, but none the less she takes a possible throw away character andgave her some life. The film does a lot of jumping from earth, back to Asgard, back toearth, back to Asgard, etc. So the pacing is an important thing. Forthe most part I thought the pacing was handled well, though I thoughtthe final act did feel a bit rushed. The 2nd act suffers from theorigin dead zone that is inherent with these films. But again, Branaghshows why he was the perfect director for this film.I did not see this in 3D. Mainly because it is a post-production 3Dconverted film. So I can't attest to how good the 3D is. The effectsare good, the sound design is perfect, with the sound of the hammerbeing a major highlight. When Thor wields it with all his might, youfeel it.Very good performances and capable directing make this a fun movie towatch. Be sure to stay around until the very end of the credits as weare given a peek at what looks like the villain in The Avengers.
